Book Synopsis Knowledge, Networks and Policy by : James Hopkins
Download or read book Knowledge, Networks and Policy written by James Hopkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The region’ has been used to understand and propose solutions to phenomena and problems outside the dominant spatial scale of the twentieth century – the nation state. Its influence can be seen in multiple social science disciplines and in public policy across the globe. But how was this knowledge organised and how were its concepts transmuted into public policy? This book charts the development of the academic field of Regional Studies and the application of its concepts in public policy through its learned society, the Regional Studies Association. In their modern form, learned societies often play a complementary role to universities, offering networks that operate in the spaces between and beyond universities, connecting specialised academics and knowledge and making it possible for them to have impact outside the academy. In contrast to the geographically tangible and popularly understood role of the university, contemporary learned societies are nebulous networks that transcend barriers and whose contribution is difficult to discern. However, the production and dissemination of knowledge would be stunted were it not for the learned society connecting scholars through a network of publications and events. This book traces the intellectual history of regional studies and regional science from the 1960s into the 2000s and the impact of the regional concept in public policy through the changing priorities of government in the UK and Europe. By approaching the history through the Regional Studies Association, it interrogates the role and function of the ‘learned society’ model of organisation in contemporary academia and importance as a knowledge exchange vehicle for public policy influence.
Book Synopsis Global Challenges in the Arctic Region by : Elena Conde
Download or read book Global Challenges in the Arctic Region written by Elena Conde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together interconnected discussions to make explicit the complexity of the Arctic region, this book offers a legal discussion of the ongoing territorial disputes and challenges in order to frame their impact into the viability of different governance strategies that are available at the national, regional and international level. One of the intrinsic features of the region is the difficulty in the determination of boundaries, responsibilities and interests. Against this background, sovereignty issues are intertwined with environmental and geopolitical issues that ultimately affect global strategic balances and international trade and, at the same time, influence national approaches to basic rights and organizational schemes regarding the protection of indigenous peoples and inhabitants of the region. This perspective lays the ground for further discussion, revolving around the main clusters of governance (focusing on the Arctic Council and the European Union, with the particular roles and interest of Arctic and non-Arctic states, and the impact on indigenous populations), environment (including the relevance of national regulatory schemes, and the intertwinement with concerns related to energy, or migration), strategy (concentrating in geopolitical realities and challenges analysed from different perspectives and focusing on different actors, and covering security and climate change related challenges). This collection provides an avenue for parallel and converging research of complex realities from different disciplines, through the expertise of scholars from different latitudes.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by W.C. Fields, 'The dentist' begins with a rather placid breakfast, a run in with the ice man and then on to the golf course where Fields, to the dismay of his companions, makes a hole-in-one on a ball drop over his shoulder. Later at the office, you see him treat several patients in the usual roughshod Fields manner. In all, a typical Fieldsian comedy.

Book Synopsis Innovations in Travel Demand Modeling by :
Download or read book Innovations in Travel Demand Modeling written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 21 through 23, 2006, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) convened the Innovations in Travel Demand Modeling Conference in Austin, Texas. The conference was sponsored by the following agencies, organizations, and companies to provide an opportunity for a frank exchange of ideas and experiences among academics, model developers, and practitioners: TRB, FHWA, FTA, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, PBS & J-Austin, URS Corporation, and HNTB Corporation. Approximately 220 individuals from across the transportation research community at national, state, regional, and local levels and from the public and private sectors and academia participated. The last major conference on specialty travel demand modeling was held as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Travel Model Improvement Program (TMIP) in the fall of 1996. At that time, there was little research and no practical application of land use models and activity-based travel demand models and their integration with demographic, economic, and network modes. Since then, there has been a literal revolution in travel demand forecasting.
