Book Synopsis Breast Cancer Screening by : Harri Vainio
Download or read book Breast Cancer Screening written by Harri Vainio and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2002 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is the leading site of new cancer cases in women. Breast cancer detection is currently primarily based on physical examination by health care professionals, chance findings by women, breast self-examination and mammography used for diagnosis or for routine screening. Early enough detection through mass screening with mammography has been introduced in many countries in the hope that early intervention would lead to reduced mortality and less aggressive treatment. The aim of this publication is to provide an independent, authoritative review of the evidence of the efficacy and effectiveness of breast cancer screening. This will be of value to governments, public health officials and others concerned with policy recommendations for cancer control.
Book Synopsis Mammography and Beyond by : National Research Council
Download or read book Mammography and Beyond written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-04 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray mammography screening is the current mainstay for early breast cancer detection. It has been proven to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage and to reduce the number of women dying from the disease. However, it has a number of limitations. These current limitations in early breast cancer detection technology are driving a surge of new technological developments, from modifications of x-ray mammography such as computer programs that can indicate suspicious areas, to newer methods of detection such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or biochemical tests on breast fluids. To explore the merits and drawbacks of these new breast cancer detection techniques, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences convened a committee of experts. During its year of operation, the committee examined the peer-reviewed literature, consulted with other experts in the field, and held two public workshops. In addition to identifying promising new technologies for early detection, the committee explored potential barriers that might prevent the development of new detection methods and their common usage. Such barriers could include lack of funding from agencies that support research and lack of investment in the commercial sector; complicated, inconsistent, or unpredictable federal regulations; inadequate insurance reimbursement; and limited access to or unacceptability of breast cancer detection technology for women and their doctors. Based on the findings of their study, the committee prepared a report entitled Mammography and Beyond: Developing Technology for Early Detection of Breast Cancer, which was published in the spring of 2001. This is a non-technical summary of that report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) present a one-day symposium that was held at the IOM to further disseminate the conclusions and recommendations of the joint IOM and National Research Council report, Saving Women's Lives: Strategies for Improving Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis. The committee assembled for this event was asked to share insights and consider ways in which the objectives of the report could be achieved from the standpoint of what women need to know, the best models of screening programs, manpower, risk stratification, basic research, and payment. This symposium seeks to provide continuing food for thought and ideas for actions in support of breast cancer detection and diagnosis and saving women's lives.

Book Synopsis Rapid On-site Evaluation (ROSE) by : Guoping Cai
Download or read book Rapid On-site Evaluation (ROSE) written by Guoping Cai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces basic ROSE techniques and resources required to set up ROSE service. It reviews the cytomorphologic features that are recognizable during ROSE, including those important for sample adequacy, specimen triage, preliminary interpretation, and potential diagnostic pitfalls. Economic and regulatory aspects are discussed as well as the pros and cons of telecytology. The book is formatted for clinical settings, simulating the ROSE process that occurs in the ultrasound room, CT room, bronchoscopy suite, and endoscopy suite. Each chapter focuses on the cytomorphologic clues and pitfalls of the entities specific to that clinical setting. Rapid On-Site Evaluation: A Practical Guide will be a valuable resource for pathologists, cytotechnologists, physicians who perform biopsies and/or ROSE evaluation, and trainees for utilizing ROSE and improving diagnostic performance of biopsies.
Book Synopsis Development, Implementation and Evaluation of a Screening Mammography Program by : Christine Natan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is a major public health concern in the United States and remains a priority for national women’s health centers, primary care practices and cancer control organizations such as the American Cancer Society (ACS). The cancer care continuum includes the spectrum of prevention/risk reduction, early detection, treatment, and living with the diagnosis. Currently there are no proven primary prevention options for women at average risk of developing breast cancer; therefore, secondary prevention interventions such as screening mammography and clinical breast examination (CBE) are required to reduce morbidity and mortality. This manuscript describes a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) led quality improvement project aimed at increasing mammography screening completion rates in one community health center within a reputable safety-net community health network with access to a mobile mammography van. The intent of this project was to discover the barriers that patients view in complying with their breast cancer screening recommendation, the workflow of the health centers with the best practice, and the creation of a mammography toolkit to provide consistency in processes amongst multiple sites. Although there were challenges in reaching a significant amount of patients to unveil all the possible barriers, overall implementation of this quality improvement project resulted in a well appreciated mammography toolkit, which will be available to all primary care health centers and included in the orientation of medical evaluation workers and health workers as it relates to patients obtaining proper breast health. Keywords: screening mammography, telephone reminder calls, toolkit, DNP

Book Synopsis Improving Breast Imaging Quality Standards by : National Research Council
Download or read book Improving Breast Imaging Quality Standards written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammography is an important tool for detecting breast cancer at an early stage. When coupled with appropriate treatment, early detection can reduce breast cancer mortality. At the request of Congress, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioned a study to examine the current practice of mammography and breast cancer detection, with a focus on the FDA's oversight via the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), to identify areas in need of improvement. Enacted in 1993, MQSA provides a general framework for ensuring national quality standards in facilities performing screening mammography, requires that each mammography facility be accredited and certified, and mandates that facilities will undergo annual inspections. This book recommends strategies for achieving continued progress in assuring mammography quality, including changes to MQSA regulation, as well as approaches that do not fall within the purview of MQSA. Specifically, this book provides recommendations aimed at improving mammography interpretation; revising MQSA regulations, inspections, and enforcement; ensuring an adequate workforce for breast cancer screening and diagnosis; and improving breast imaging quality beyond mammography.
