Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's fairly easy to see the ways in which science has advanced over the years, forming truths and laws that many people accept worldwide. Yet most religions resist change, and, in turn, most religions remain backward and divisive. Is there potential for better human unity if we demystify the puzzle of religion as we have demystified other puzzles? Douglas Hufschmid explores these topics and more in The Puzzle of Religion. With astute investigations into contemporary religious beliefs, Hufschmid seeks to unravel the ways in which religion must compete with other aspects of modern life, such as science, the Internet, and Hollywood. The Puzzle of Religion dives deep into the fascinating contradiction between scientific advancement and religious stagnation. The better we can understand our desire for advances within science, the better we can understand why the world's religions lack similar advances. Is it possible to develop a worldwide consensus on religion? For every human to hold the same set of truths-as is the case with science? As The Puzzle of Religion unveils, this consensus could be the missing piece in unity. It could be the last piece in the puzzle for world peace.

Book excerpt: We are all a bit broken and Katherine was no different. She spent her life searching to understand why her father walked out the door and never returned. After his disappearance, she spent the rest of her childhood in two different parts of a racially divided town and soon discovered she belonged in both. Katherine lived her entire life in Kingston, a small southern town with a dark past of its own but full of lovable and intriguing characters. A charismatic doctor and a large-and-in-charge seamstress step up to the plate when Katherine's family dissolves. Add the wealthy owner of a timber empire, a woman struggling to fight an addiction, a truck driver, and two lost travelers who aren't really sure what they are seeking. It's the promises we make to each other that bind us and sometimes those same promises can rip us apart. The two people Katherine loved the longest in life had known all along what caused her father's disappearance. She discovered the potency of both a promise kept and a promise shattered when their vow of secrecy was broken. After her death, four people are summoned by her attorney to discover what she bequeathed to each of them. But are any of them at all prepared how Katherine's gifts will change their lives forever?

Great expectations brought me to this dreadful place. During a seven-year period of captivity I documented my extraordinary experiences. For a single purpose. To inform the public of what's to come. The world is on the precipice. Either go over the edge or be saved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peregrine's Island is the third volume in the four volume series The Berlin Book. This volume follows the career of the German-American writer, John Schade, the main character of volume one Schade's Passage. He returns to the USA after his tour of duty in Berlin as a cultural affairs officer in the American sector with a pile of notes for a novel about the exile experience of anti-Nazi Germans including his own family. Disappointed with the sales of and lack of royalties from the book, he moves to Key West at the southeastern end of the Florida Keys in 1947 to live cheaply and write a second novel. On the island he meets new friends including Perri who becomes his lover, the photo journalist Francesca, the part time hooker Silver, the blind newsbringer Anselmo, the writer Samuel Mithman (who appears briefly in volumes one & two), and the Jewish German now American sailor Franz Friedmann who becomes a close friend but leaves to join the nascent Israeli navy in the war between the new Jewish state and its Arab neighbors. Matters involving Berlin catch up with Schade throughout the book: His former cultural affairs colleague in that city, William Makepeace, visits to urge him to return to Berlin and write about the Soviet blockade of the western sectors; characters he knew in the city write him giving news of the situation there; and representatives of Israel visit to convince him to talk to gentiles in Miami in an effort to raise money to fund hospitals and support the war effort. The torrid tropical atmosphere of the island leads to all sorts of sensual and sexual experiences for the characters. In the end, Schade finishes the novel and is once again drawn back to the ruptured former capital of Germany, the narrative of which will be contained in volume four, Ursula's Triumph.

Book excerpt: The first part of the book takes place 1875-1925 in Texas. A man lost in the desert finds his "spirit animal", a deer that guides him to an oasis where he learns how to survive. His deer introduces him to the cactus, peyote. The man has renamed himself Adam, like a new man reborn. He has peyote infused visions that unknown to him predict his future and the future of his family. He leaves his oasis to find his place in the real world. He crosses the desert where he finds the woman of his visions. Her name is Eva. She is a Mexican laborers daughter. They marry and raise a family with all that entails, the good and the bad. Several of their children die in infancy while one becomes a famous border killer, others farmers and one a railroad man. The railroad minded son marries an Apache captive and they move to Ft. Worth where they establish the Texas family name of Bridgewater that survives to this day. Eva dies and Adam now alone returns to his desert oasis to live out the rest of his days. His last encounter on this earth is with a large, hungry bear. This ends Part 1 of the story. Part 2 of the story takes place between 1950-2015. The story applies the Ten Commandments of the Bible to lives of ordinary members of the Bridgewater family via eleven short stories. The reason that there are eleven instead of ten separate stories is that a member of the Bridgewater family, Herbert has without knowing it created an eleventh commandment as a guide for his family and any others that will listen.

Book excerpt: Two weeks earlier, Kate Quinlan was just your average British expat with a PhD, working in Silicon Valley as an artificial-intelligence designer for ultraviolent video games, spending the evenings hanging out with her pet chimp—and wondering how something as weird as human consciousness could have evolved through mere Darwinian selection. But when a disconcertingly attractive behavioral geneticist and a hotshot cryptologist stroll into her life, she begins looking for answers in the backwaters of the human genome—the 97 percent written off as "junk DNA." And when men in strange hats come looking for her hard drive, shooting first and never really asking any questions, she finds herself on the run—pursued by multiple squads of heavily-armed religious zealots, the Feds, and worse. All seek to obtain, or to suppress forever, the key to the revelatory stretch of DNA known as the Pandora Sequence. The outcome of their race to control this explosive secret will forever alter how humanity regards itself—that is, if anyone lives long enough to tell the tale.

Book excerpt: The Human Symphony compares the human body to an orchestra. Like an orchestra, the body has many players who must be in tune with one another. When the players are harmoniously in tune, the result is a joyous symphony. When the body's natural rhythms are in tune and vibrating in harmony, we have good health, energy, and vitality. When our body rhythms are out of tune, our health is impaired. Each body system has its own tone, its own rhythm, its own harmony, and together they sing the human symphony. The natural rhythms of the body can be restored with sound or vibration. The ancient origins of sound healing are outlined by Dr. Wieder and the basis of modern sound therapy is reviewed. Every thing in the universe vibrates and has its own vibrational frequency. The author describes how she explored the vibrational frequencies of first the spine, and then the entire human body. She discovered that tuning forks can restore the natural harmonic resonance of vertebrae. When treating clients she found tuning forks awkward to work with, so she came up with the idea of developing an electronic tuning fork that could provide the desired frequencies. With the help of a talented and creative electronic designer, a functional electronic tuning fork was produced and marketed. Dr. Wieder clearly describes in detail how to use the electronic tuning fork and muscle testing in vibration therapy. Muscle testing is an important element in finding and treating dysfunctions of the body. Case histories provide examples of using the electronic turning fork for treating various ailments. The final chapter takes a look at future research in sound and vibration therapy.
