To combat this threat the GPS JPO initiated the Tactical GPS AntiJam Technology project, which yielded a prototype Digital Excision Filter (DEF) to remove narrowband jammers. This research describes the work performed to get tht DEF hardware operational and extends the previous research performed in this area. Comdisco's Signal Processing Worksystem was used to examine the effect of the DEF on the probability of bit error. This research uses peak to average correlation value, probability of bit error, and percent jammer power removed to examine the performance of the DEF. Fourteen jamming scenarios are examined using CW, pulsed CW, and broadband noise jammers. The DEF effectively rejected all of the jammers except the broadband noise jammer. In scenarios other than the broadband noise jammer, the DEF removed over 98% of the jammer power. The bit error rate curves show that the DEF significantly enhanced the performance of the system in extreme jamming environments. The results presented in this research show that the DEF is a viable, robust option to remove narrowband interference.

Book excerpt: This report describes results of an investigation of narrowband interference suppression in a pseudo-noise (PN) spread spectrum digital communication system in which the signal is also distorted by channel multipath and fading. Techniques for determining the coefficients of a linear, interference suppression filter are described, which are based on linear prediction and conventional spectral analysis methods. Numerical results are presented on the effectiveness of the linear filter in suppressing the interference. Error rate results, obtained via Monte Carlo simulation are presented for a receiver that employs interference suppression and equalization for a fading multipath channel. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a study of maximum likelihood receiver structures for direct sequence spread spectrum communications over channels with multipath distortion and narrowband interference, and several methods of assessing the bit error probability performance of bit-by-bit receivers and maximum likelihood receivers. This work is a continuation of work which focused on the performance of various methods of suppressing narrowband interference using spectral estimation. The previous work gave performance results in terms of SNR improvement provided by interference suppression. The previous results are extended in this report by deriving a receiver structure based on the maximum likelihood (minimum probability of error) principle. Error probability results given include simulation of a bit-by-bit receiver operated in conjunction with dispersive and nondispersive channels with narrowband interference. Also, a technique for assessing the error rate by averaging conditional probabilities is stated which applies to both fixed nondispersive and fixed dispersive channels, and bit-by-bit and maximum likelihood receivers. Probability of error results obtained using this approach are given. (Author).

Book excerpt: Analytical results have shown that adaptive filtering can be a powerful tool for the rejection of narrowband interference in a direct sequence spread spectrum receiver. However, the complexity of adaptive filtering hardware has hindered the experimental validation of these results. This thesis describes a unique adaptive filter architecture for implementing the Widrow-Hoff Least- Mean-Square (LMS) algorithm using two state-of-the-art Acoustic Charge Transport (ACT) Programmable Transversal Filters (PTFs). Signal-to-noise ratio improvement measurements demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptive filter for suppressing single- and dual-tone jammers at jammer-to-signal ratios (JSRs) of up to 30 dB. It is shown that the ACT adaptive interference rejection system can consistently produce 55 dB notch depths with 3-dB bandwidths as low as 300 kHz with minimal degradation to the spread spectrum signal. It is also shown that the adaptive system can eliminate single tone jammers at any frequency within the spread spectrum bandwidth at any of 10, 20, or 30 dB JSRs within 10-15 iterations of the adaptive algorithm. The only drawback with the adaptive system as tested is the amount of time taken to perform an iteration because of the requirement to update the PTF tap weights sequentially. Suggestions are given as to how this particular parameter of the adaptive interference system could be optimized.

Book excerpt: This report presents a comprehensive summary of a number of methods used in filtering narrowband jammers and interference out of direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. The basic concept is presented first followed by a discussion of several analog techniques for interference suppression. Most of the emphasis is on digital adaptive methods, which rely on adaptive filtering algorithms. Many of these algorithms are highlighted. This is followed by a discussion on the research which has been conducted in digital excision over the past several years. Two cases based on the author's work are also presented. The first details the performance one can expect from the recursive least squares algorithm when the interferer is a stable tone. An analytical model, which predicts the bit error rate performance for the recursive algorithm under certain conditions, is derived. This model is compared to results obtained from computer simulation, the tracking and filtering capabilities of hte block and recursive least square algorithms when the interference is of the FM-type, i.e., a swept tone having a bandwidth which is approximately 20% of the chip rate. Book excerpt: A direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) receiver is vulnerable to being desensitized by high-power narrowband signals within its wide received bandwidth. A solution to this problem is to detect the interfering signals and remove them from the received bandwidth in a process called narrowband interference excision. This can be achieved through a number of existing techniques. However, a hybrid system that utilizes both DSSS and frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) techniques complicates the solution. This thesis investigates one technique for narrowband interference excision in the context of such a hybrid frequency-hopping/direct-sequence spread-spectrum (FH/DSSS) system. This technique is based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). An overview of DFT-based excision employing an overlap-and-add architecture is given. The critical properties of the window function used are examined, including windowing loss, excision lass, and interference rejection. Finally, the application of DFT-based excision in a hybrid FH/DSSS system is explored.

Book excerpt: This report presents a novel Kalman filtering approach to the suppression of narrowband interference from direct sequence spread spectrum communications systems. The algorithm is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto a function related to the interference. The net result is an estimate of the phase of the interference and its amplitude. The algorithm is characterized through computer simulation for the case of narrowband Gaussian noise interference. Examples of the phase- and envelope-tracking capabilities of the algorithm are presented, followed by bit error rate curves for interference bandwidths ranging from 0.5% to 5.0% of the chip rate of the spread spectrum signal. The report concludes with three adaptive architectures.-The first is suitable for constant envelope interference; the second is a more general structure; and the third incorporate a decision-feedback structure accompanied with a training sequence.

Book excerpt: This report presents results on the evaluation of several diversity combining techniques that are suggested for frequency-hop (FH) communications with partial-band interference and fading. The analysis covers systems with M-ary orthogonal signaling and noncoherent demodulation. The partial-band interference is modeled as a Gaussian process, although some of the results also apply to general (non-Gaussian) partial-band interference. The performance measures we use to evaluate the diversity combining techniques are the narrowband interference rejection capability and the signal to noise ratio requirement over the entire range of interference duty factors. We evaluate the exact probability of error for each of the diversity combining techniques studied. The performance of the optimum combining technique for receivers with perfect side information is established. It is shown that for receivers with perfect side information, the system performance does not change significantly with the choice of the diversity combining technique. However, the same schemes that work well in receivers with perfect side information perform poorly in receivers without side information. Keywords include: Diversity combining; Frequency-hop; Spread-spectrum; Partial band interference and Fading.

Book excerpt: To realize the full performance advantage of a pseudonoise spread-spectrum communication system, a receiver must suppress strong narrowband interferers. Conventional frequency-domain excision techniques are complicated by spreading effects due to the sidelobes of the sin(x)/x function. This paper shows that such problems can be avoided by regarding the N samples of a band-limited times series and its finite Fourier transform as a vector in an N-dimensional space. Narrowband interference can be suppressed by projecting the data vector onto the subspace orthogonal to the one that best fits the interference. The theory developed here includes a least squares criterion for finding this subspace. (RH).
