Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although standard gauge railways - albeit of different gauges - came to dominate the railways of Britain and Ireland, there was also a considerable number of narrow gauge lines constructed throughout the British Isles. Whilst many of these were built almost exclusively for industrial purposes and never saw regular passenger service, a significant number from the Cambeltown & Machrihanish on the Mull of Kintyre, to the Southwold on the Suffolk Coast and the Lynton & Barnstaple in North Devon, carried regular passenger services. This book looks in detail at the narrow gauge lines across the British Isles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Welsh Highland Railway was the longest of the Welsh narrow gauge railways, running all the way from Dinas Junction to Porthmadog. The line's origins dated back to the 1870s when the first section of the line was opened as the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway. The route's completion throughout however, only dated from the 1920s, when under the influence of Colonel Stephens the line was extended to Porthmadog. This represented the last major expansion of the narrow gauge network of North Wales. This expanded and updated volume has been designed to complement reputed author Peter Johnson's first edition of 'An Illustrated History of the Welsh Highland Railway' published in 2002. Incorporating many stunning colour images, and published to coincide with the reopening of the line in the spring, it is a must-have for all those who fondly remember this line.Containing a vast amount of new information, this important new volume brings the story of the line's rebuilding up to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book is essential reading for all those who wish to build a small, narrow gauge model railway layout to a high standard. Comprehensive in its coverage, the book begins with a useful summary of the history and development of narrow gauge railways in the British Isles, and this is followed by a detailed, but easily digestible, consideration of the complex and wide choice of scales available to the modeller. In subsequent chapters, the author covers all aspects of construction, including materials and tools, skills and techniques, layout design, laying the track, scenic modelling, painting, soldering and wiring, as well as the construction of narrow gauge stock and appropriate buildings. The author provides clear, step-by-step instructions and photographs to show the reader how to build a straightforward narrow gauge model of a fictitious late 19th to early 20th century light railway in 4mm scale on 9mm track. He also suggests how the methods he has used can be adapted to other scales and briefly explains, by way of example, how they can be transferred directly to 7mm scale. Fully illustrated with 223 colour photographs and also included are several working sketches.

It outlines the diverse range of prototype narrow gauge railways in Britain and overseas, along with some of the different traditions and practices adopted in different parts of the world. The book covers: how to select a subject to model based on experience and models available; construction of a compact prototypical 009 layout, its locomotives and rolling stock; control and signalling of layouts; layout maintenance and improvement and the challenges of exhibiting models; how to share experience with like-minded modellers. A comprehensive and informative book, that provides a detailed insight into railway modelling techniques in the 009 scale, and is fully illustrated throughout with 256 colour, 16 black and white photographs and 43 diagrams.

He has travelled extensively in search of interesting, and often obscure, railways in remote locations. His previous book looked at the narrow gauge scene around the world and how many of its historic railways were surviving in the twenty first century. This new volume looks at some of them in greater detail and uses much hitherto unpublished material. The book is full of attractive and rarely seen photos. Some of them depict railways that were in their last days of everyday use, while others show heritage operations which still look much as they did when the trains were running commercially.

Book excerpt: Although a great deal has been published on the economic, social and engineering history of nineteenth-century railways, the work of historical geographers has been much less conspicuous. This overview by David Turnock goes a long way towards restoring the balance. It details every important aspect of the railway’s influence on spatial distribution of economic and social change, providing a full account of the nineteenth-century geography of the British Isles seen in the context of the railway. The book reviews and explains the shape of the developing railway network, beginning with the pre-steam railways and connections between existing road and water communications and the new rail lines. The author also discusses the impact of the railways on the patterns of industrial, urban and rural change throughout the century. Throughout, the historical geography of Ireland is treated in equal detail to that of Great Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arras sector of the Western Front in World War I (WW1) was held partly by the British and Dominions 1st Army from September 1915, and almost wholly by the 1st and 3rd Armies from March 1916. No less than in the Ypres sector to the north and the Somme sector to the south, the struggles of the French and then British troops in this sector were pivotal to the outcome of the War. The sector included countryside in the south, but in the north a major part of the industrial and coal-mining area of northern France, around Lens and Bthune. In this book the contribution of metre and 60 cm gauge railways to the Allied war effort in this sector is examined in the context of the history of the metre gauge lines already established. The build up of light (60 cm gauge) lines from 1916 is examined in detail area by area, and the contribution of the related metre gauge lines is reassessed, from British and French sources. After the War the role of these railways in the reconstruction and recovery of this devastated region of France is described. Later the surviving part of the 60 cm gauge network served the sugar beet industry east of Arras. The history is followed through another World War to the closure of the last of these railways in 1957.The book refers to previous works on British War Department light railways in WW1, but contains sufficient general information for readers new to the subject. It also describes how to find key locations now, and how and where rolling stock can be seen. Six walks and an urban tour are included for those who wish to explore the territory in greater depth.
