Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narratives of the Sioux War Lest this appear pessimistic, it is well to explain that it was hard to deal reasonably with these strange people who claimed the land. As said by Rev. Samuel W. Pond, They were not models for imitation, neither were they properly objects of con tempt. Those who care to investigate will find many reasons for the outbreak of 1862, but the essential facts are, that the Indians were obnoxious to and in the way of the whites, were preyed upon by conscienceless traders and boot-legging liquor sellers, and were neglected by the government and its agents, till at last long smothered anger and acute hunger produced a storm that broke in fury, the opening event of which was the murders at Acton on Sunday, the 17th day of August, 1862. In Acton township, Meeker county, on section 21, lived Rob inson Jones, postmaster, Indian trader, and farmer. He was married to Mrs. Ann Baker the previous year, on January 14; but through some error her name appears as Ann Baker on the monument erected over the remains of the victims at Ness Cemetery. Living with them was Jones' niece, Clara D. Wil son, aged fifteen years, and her half brother, eight months old. The house was a two-story log building overlooking a marshy lake on the south, and was surrounded by heavy timber known as the Acton Woods, a part of the once famous Big Woods. The pembina-henderson trail passed at the back of the house and along the west side. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Bringing together Custer, Sherman, Grant, and other fascinating military and political figures, as well as great native leaders such as Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and Geronimo, this “sweeping work of narrative history” (San Francisco Chronicle) is the fullest account to date of how the West was won—and lost. After the Civil War the Indian Wars would last more than three decades, permanently altering the physical and political landscape of America. Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail. He illuminates the intertribal strife over whether to fight or make peace; explores the dreary, squalid lives of frontier soldiers and the imperatives of the Indian warrior culture; and describes the ethical quandaries faced by generals who often sympathized with their native enemies. In dramatically relating bloody and tragic events as varied as Wounded Knee, the Nez Perce War, the Sierra Madre campaign, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn, we encounter a pageant of fascinating characters, including Custer, Sherman, Grant, and a host of officers, soldiers, and Indian agents, as well as great native leaders such as Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Geronimo, and Red Cloud and the warriors they led. The Earth Is Weeping is a sweeping, definitive history of the battles and negotiations that destroyed the Indian way of life even as they paved the way for the emergence of the United States we know today.

Book excerpt: The Great Sioux War pitted almost one-third of the U.S. Army against Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyennes. By the time it ended, this war had played out on twenty-seven different battlefields, resulted in hundreds of casualties, cost millions of dollars, and transformed the landscape and the lives of survivors on both sides. In this compelling sourcebook, Paul Hedren uses extensive documentation to demonstrate that the American army adapted quickly to the challenges of fighting this unconventional war and was more effectively led and better equipped than is customarily believed.

Book excerpt: This volume offers accounts of the many battles and skirmishes in the Great Sioux War as they were observed by participating officers, enlisted men, scouts, surgeons, and newspaper correspondents. The selections-some rendered immediately after the encounters and some set down in reminiscences years later - are important and little-known sources of information about the war. By their personal nature, they give a compelling sense of immediacy to the actions. The editor's introduction and commentary on each of the accounts help readers understand the interrelationship of events and appreciate the entire spectrum of the conflict.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1862, we were living in the State of Minnesota. There I had a most remarkable experience. We lived about a mile from the town of Lac Qui Parle. There were only three of us—father, mother, and myself. My name is Susanna. We had moved to Minnesota three years before. My parents moved to restore their health; for they were feeble and needed a change of climate. The first year, both father and mother were much better; but not long after, father began to fail. One day the sky was cloudy, and it looked as if a storm was coming. Since it was dark and blustering, we remained inside the rest of the evening. A fine drizzling rain began to fall, and the darkness was intense. It was getting late and father was reading to us, when there came a rap upon the door. It was so gentle and timid that it sounded like the pecking of a bird. We all looked at the door, uncertain what it meant. “It is a bird, scared by the storm,” said father, “and we may as well let it in.” I sat much nearer the door than either of my parents, so I jumped up and opened it. As I did so, I looked out into the gloom. Suddenly I sprung back with a cry of alarm. “What's the matter?” asked father. He quickly dropped the book and came toward me. “It isn't a bird; it's a person.” As I spoke, a little Indian girl, about my own age, walked into the room. Find out what the little girl is doing out in a storm, and how she saves the lives of the settlers a short time later. Ages 8 and up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eyewitness account of Indian warfare during the American Civil War For anyone interested in the history of the American West-and the wars against the Plains Indian tribes in particular-this book will be a delight. The author enlisted in the Union Army to fight in the American Civil War, but instead of marching eastwards to fight the soldiers of the southern Confederacy he found himself involved in the bitter and savage campaigns against the Sioux and their allies in Minnesota. Readers may be familiar with the Plains Indian wars of the post Civil War period, dominated by the doomed figure of George Armstrong Custer, but whilst the 'boy general' was gaining fame with his Michigan cavalry brigade, the desperately under protected and vulnerable frontier settlements had to fight off sustained and overwhelming attacks by hostile Indians. Fort Ridgeley was dangerously besieged and the small town of New Ulm was so fiercely attacked and surrounded that there was the potential for massacre the like of which was unprecedented. Connelly tells his story in a way that conveys the immediacy of events; with him the reader will experience the close fought fight at Birch Coolie and the Battle of Wood Lake. The year of 1863 saw the Minnesota troops on campaign again fighting at the battles of Big Mound, Buffalo Lake and Stony Lake. While the Civil War continued many miles from the troubled frontiers of westward expansion, 1864 brought more campaigning against hostile tribes for Connelly that culminated in the Battle of the Bad Lands. The author's narrative is added to by the inclusion of panoramic battlefield drawings which usefully assist the reader's understanding. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
