Book Synopsis Modern Revivalism by : William G. McLoughlin
Download or read book Modern Revivalism written by William G. McLoughlin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-28 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with religious revivalism in the United States since 1825. It attempts to explain the part which revivalism has played, and is playing today, in the social, intellectual, and religious life of America. The aim has been, in describing the development of modern revivalism and the men who devoted their lives to it, to look below the surface phenomenon in an effort to discover why revivals have constantly recurred, what their effects have been, and what they meant not only to those directly concerned but to all Americans. If the revivals of the past century and a quarter have not always been the crucial factors in the course of American history that their devout exponents claimed, they have nevertheless been more significant than the social historians have yet acknowledged. from the Preface
Book Synopsis God's Man for the Gilded Age by : Bruce J. Evensen
Download or read book God's Man for the Gilded Age written by Bruce J. Evensen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At his death on the eve of the 20th century, D.L. Moody was widely recognized as one of the most beloved and important of men in 19th-century America. A Chicago shoe salesman with a fourth grade education, Moody rose from obscurity to become God's man for the Gilded Age. He was the Billy Graham of his day--indeed it could be said that Moody invented the system of evangelism that Graham inherited and perfected. Bruce J. Evensen focuses on the pivotal years during which Moody established his reputation on both sides of the Atlantic through a series of highly popular and publicized campaigns. In four short years Moody forged the bond between revivalism and the mass media that persists to this day. Beginning in Britain in 1873 and extending across America's urban landscape, first in Brooklyn and then in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and Boston, Moody used the power of prayer and publicity to stage citywide crusades that became civic spectacles. Modern newspapers, in the grip of economic depression, needed a story to stimulate circulation and found it in Moody's momentous mission. The evangelist and the press used one another in creating a sense of civic excitement that manufactured the largest crowds in municipal history. Critics claimed this machinery of revival was man-made. Moody's view was that he'd rather advertise than preach to empty pews. He brought a businessman's common sense to revival work and became, much against his will, a celebrity evangelist. The press in city after city made him the star of the show and helped transform his religious stage into a communal entertainment of unprecedented proportions. In chronicling Moody's use of the press and their use of him, Evensen sheds new light on a crucial chapter in the history of evangelicalism and demonstrates how popular religion helped form our modern media culture.
Book Synopsis Apostles of the Spirit and Fire by : Nigel Scotland
Download or read book Apostles of the Spirit and Fire written by Nigel Scotland and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about American revivalist religion and the ways in which it impacted British Christianity in nineteenth-century England. The term `revivalist' seems to have first been used in the period after the `Second Great Awakening' in the United States. It designated those individuals and churches who sought to manufacture or create revival by human endeavor rather than, as in former times, pray and wait for a sovereign move of God's Spirit. Revivalism had a number of marked features which are charted in detail in chapter 1. it was inevitably characterized by emotion, excitement and religious exercises. Particular attention has been given to ways in which the different American revivalists understood revival and the methods by which they sought to achieve it. The book includes a focus on one or two female revivalists whose work has tended to be overlocked in some studies. "A treasure trove of good things! Nigel Scotland has produced a carefully researched, well written accessible and captivating study. While the obvious revival figures are given their due, he breaks new ground with the inclusion of material on unknown or less well-known figures and types of mission. His figures come alive and are given good opportunities to speak for themselves. There is a judicious handling of controversial historiographical and historical matters. The impact of the whole is enhanced by effective graphics." ---Lisa Severine Nolland lay chaplain and tutor in Bristol, and author of a Victorian Feminist Christian: Josephine Butler, the Prostitutes and God (Paternoster, 2004) "This is a wide-ranging study which offers vivid pictures of well-known American revivalists such as Charles Finney and D.L. Moody, as well as several whose work has been given much less attention. It is particularly pleasing to have chapters on two African American women, Zilpha Elaw and Amanda Berry Smith. The influence of Phoebe Palmer and Hannah Pearsall Smith, both of whom helped to shape aspects of the nineteenth-century holiness movements, is also helpfully analyzed. This book is an excellent resource for those interested in the history of revival movements." ---Lan M. Randall Director of Research, Spurgeon's College, London, and Senior Research Fellow at the International Baptist Theological Seminary, Prague

Book excerpt: "This book is a discussion of the part played by religious revivalism, and by the American professional religious revivalist, in the religious world of nineteenth-century England. It was during the Victorian period that popular Protestantism began to lose its grip on English society. This was true despite the strength of the denominations. It is therefore against a background of slowly changing popular religion that the role of the professional revivalist has to be studied." --From the First Chapter

This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full biography of James Rendel Harris (1852-1941), Bible and patristic scholar, manuscript collector, Quaker theologian, devotional writer, traveller, folklorist, and relief worker. Drawing on published and unpublished sources gathered in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, many of which were previously unknown, Alessandro Falcetta tells the story of Harris's life and works set against the background of the cultural and political life of contemporary Britain. Falcetta traces the development of Harris's career from Cambridge to Birmingham, the story of his seven journeys to the Middle East, and of his many campaigns, from religious freedom to conscientious objection. The book focuses upon Harris's innovative contributions in the field of textual and literary criticism, his acquisitions of hundreds of manuscripts from the Middle East, his discoveries of early Christian works – in particular the Odes of Solomon – his Quaker beliefs and his studies in the cult of twins. His enormous output and extensive correspondence reveal an indefatigable genius in close contact with the most famous scholars of his time, from Hort to Harnack, Nestle, the 'Sisters of Sinai', and Frazer.
