Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Captivity in France, Form 1800 to 1814, Vol. 1 of 2 The following Narrative is a faithful transcript of the Author's journal during the eventful period of his captivity. To his companions in misfortune it may recall the memory of past sufferings, not always unvisited by occasional gleams of passing sunshine; and to the reader, he trusts it will be found not altogether uninteresting. Aiming at little more, the Author respectfully presents his work to the public eye, as one possessing, if nothing higher, at least the merit that may be fairly claimed for simplicity and truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conscript: A Story of the French War of 1813 Instead of following "Madame Therese" with stories celebrating the victories of Napoleon and thus appealing to their compatriots' love of glory and military illusions, MM. Erckmann-Chatrian take up next the tragic and far more significant story of 1812-13. With "The Conscript" begins their long, sustained, and eloquent sermon against war and war-wagers - the exordium, so to say, of their arraignment of Napoleon for wanton and insatiate love of conquest. "The Conscript" is certainly one of the most impressive statements of the darker side of the national pursuit of military glory that have ever been made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Page of the Duke of Savoy, Vol. 1 Finally, after the death of Charles the Bold, Mary of Burgundy, the last heiress of the gigantic name and im mense possessions of her father, made, on the day she mar ried Maximilian, Son of the Emperor Frederick III., both name and possessions part and parcel Of the domains Of the house of Austria, in which they were swallowed up, as a. River is swallowed up in the ocean. It was a great loss for France, for Artois is a fine and rich province. Consequently, for three years, with varying fortunes and unforeseen results, Henry II. And Charles V. Have been struggling face to face, and foot to foot, the one to regain, the other to keep it. During the furious war in which the son encountered the Old enemy Of the father, and, like the father, was to have his Marignano and Pavia, each had his good and bad days, his victories and defeats. France had seen the army of Charles V. Driven in disorder from the siege of Metz, and had taken Marienbourg, Bouvines and Dinant; the Empire, on the other hand, had stormed Therouanne and Hesdin, and, furious at its defeat before Metz, had burned the one, and levelled the other to the ground. Book excerpt: In a radically new interpretation and synthesis of highly popular 18th- and 19th-century genres, Michelle Burnham examines the literature of captivity, and, using Homi Bhabha's concept of interstitiality as a base, provides a valuable redescription of the ambivalent origins of the US national narrative. Stories of colonial captives, sentimental heroines, or fugitive slaves embody a "binary division between captive and captor that is based on cultural, national, or racial difference," but they also transcend these pre-existing antagonistic dichotomies by creating a new social space, and herein lies their emotional power. Beginning from a simple question on why captivity, particularly that of women, so often inspires a sentimental response, Burnham examines how these narratives elicit both sympathy and pleasure. The texts carry such great emotional impact precisely because they "traverse those very cultural, national, and racial boundaries that they seem so indelibly to inscribe. Captivity literature, like its heroines, constantly negotiates zones of contact," and crossing those borders reveals new cultural paradigms to the captive and, ultimately, the reader.

Book excerpt: A powerful and impassioned historical account of the largest successful revolt by enslaved people in history: the Haitian Revolution of 1791–1803 “One of the seminal texts about the history of slavery and abolition.... Provocative and empowering.” —The New York Times Book Review The Black Jacobins, by Trinidadian historian C. L. R. James, was the first major analysis of the uprising that began in the wake of the storming of the Bastille in France and became the model for liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of plantation owners toward enslaved people was horrifyingly severe. And it is the story of a charismatic and barely literate enslaved person named Toussaint L’Ouverture, who successfully led the Black people of San Domingo against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces—and in the process helped form the first independent post-colonial nation in the Caribbean. With a new introduction (2023) by Professor David Scott.
