Download or read book New Grub Street written by George Gissing and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-07 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Grub Street: Large Print by George Gissing For many readers New Grub Street is Gissing's masterpiece. If this is not accepted, it remains beyond doubt one of his most interesting and most powerful novels. As a realistic picture of the literary in late Victorian England, New Grub Street has few rivals. There is much of Gissing himself, his idealism, pride, impracticality, in Edwin Reardon the study of the creative artist oppressed by poverty bears the stamp of bitter experience. Of the other characters, pedantic Alfred Yule, the humble scholar Biffen, ambitious and worldly Jasper Milvain are still recognizable literary types. New Grub Street is a sombre and moving story, cynical in its conclusions, but deriving from its close observation and deep integrity a lasting importance for students of character and period.
Book Synopsis Understanding Heritage by : Marie-Theres Albert
Download or read book Understanding Heritage written by Marie-Theres Albert and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication is the first in a new series on existing and innovative paradigms in Heritage Studies. The series aims at systematising and developing the academic discourse on heritage, which has yielded a wealth and breadth of contributions over the past few years. The publication offers its own emphasis by developing heritage studies with a perspective towards and as a contribution to human development. It thus offers a vision for the construction and establishment of a new discipline. The academic mainsprings and research interests of this repositioning of heritage studies as an academic discipline are discussed by internationally renowned thinkers and heritage practitioners. The publication thus establishes first important points for discussion. Central to this publication are questions concerning the sustainable protection and use of heritage, focussing on the world cultural heritage and intangible cultural heritage, but equally questions on the relation of heritage and memory and how these could mutually enrich our understanding of heritage.

Book Synopsis Cultural and Spiritual Significance of Nature in Protected Areas by : Bas Verschuuren
Download or read book Cultural and Spiritual Significance of Nature in Protected Areas written by Bas Verschuuren and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural and spiritual bonds with ‘nature’ are among the strongest motivators for nature conservation; yet they are seldom taken into account in the governance and management of protected and conserved areas. The starting point of this book is that to be sustainable, effective, and equitable, approaches to the management and governance of these areas need to engage with people’s deeply held cultural, spiritual, personal, and community values, alongside inspiring action to conserve biological, geological, and cultural diversity. Since protected area management and governance have traditionally been based on scientific research, a combination of science and spirituality can engage and empower a variety of stakeholders from different cultural and religious backgrounds. As evidenced in this volume, stakeholders range from indigenous peoples and local communities to those following mainstream religions and those representing the wider public. The authors argue that the scope of protected area management and governance needs to be extended to acknowledge the rights, responsibilities, obligations, and aspirations of stakeholder groups and to recognise the cultural and spiritual significance that ‘nature’ holds for people. The book also has direct practical applications. These follow the IUCN Best Practice Guidelines for protected and conserved area managers and present a wide range of case studies from around the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas.
