Book excerpt: A new understanding of thermodynamics at the nanoscale resulted in a recently discovered first order phase transition that nanoparticles in a polymer film will all segregate to the supporting substrate. This is an unusual phase transition that was predicted using a modeling technique developed at Sandia National Laboratories and required the equivalent of many computational years on one computer. This project is a collaboration between Prof. Michael Mackay's group and Dr. Amalie Frischknecht (Sandia National Laboratories) where experimental observation and theoretical rationalization and prediction are brought together. Other discoveries were that this phase transition could be avoided by changing the nanoparticle properties yielding control of the assembly process at the nanoscale. In fact, the nanoparticles could be made to assemble to the supporting substrate, to the air interface or not assemble at all within a thin polymer film of order 100 nm in thickness. However, when the assembly process is present it is so robust that it is possible to make rough liquid films at the nanoscale due to nanoparticles assembling around three-dimensional objects. From this knowledge we are able to design and manufacture new coatings with particular emphasis on polymer-based solar cells. Careful control of the morphology at the nanoscale is expected to provide more efficient devices since the physics of these systems is dictated at this length scale and assembly of nanoparticles to various interfaces is critical to operation.

Thin, supported, polymer films are subject to interfacial instabilities, due largely to competing intermolecular forces, that cause them to rupture and dewet the substrate. The addition of nanoparticles (such as clay sheets, metallic or semiconductor nanocrystals, carbon nanotubes, etc.) to polymers can substantially affect bulk properties, such as the glass transition and viscosity, and influence the processability of the material. In this dissertation, we contribute to a fundamental understanding of the role of interfacial interactions on both the instabilities exhibited by polymer thin films and the properties displayed by polymer-nanoparticle mixtures. While conditions under which the destabilization of compositionally homogeneous thin films occurs are relatively well understood, the mechanisms of film stabilization in many two-component thin film systems are still unresolved. We demonstrate that the addition of a miscible component to an unstable film can provide an effective means of stabilization. The details of the stabilization mechanism are understood in terms of the compositional dependence of both the macroscopic wetting parameters and the effective interface potential for the system. We find that the suppression of dewetting in the system is not an equilibrium stabilization process and propose a mechanism by which the increased resistance to dewetting may occur. There is also significant interest in understanding the extraordinary property enhancement of polymers that are enabled by the addition of only small concentrations of nanoparticles. If these effects could be distilled down to a few simple rules, they could be exploited in the design of materials for specific applications. In this work, the influence of C60 nanoparticles on the bulk dynamical properties of three polymers is examined. Based on the findings from a range of measurement techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, dynamic rheology and neutron scattering, we propose that the changes in the glass transition temperature for the polymer-C60 mixtures can be understood in terms of a percolation interpretation of the glass transition. The proposed mechanism is also characterized computationally.

Book excerpt: Properties and fabrications of ultra-thin polymer films and hierarchical composites are of great interest in packaging, electronics, separations, and other manufacturing fields. However, due to the inherently fragile nature of ultra-thin polymer films, measuring their properties has proven difficult. Additionally, variables controlling thin polymer patterns (e.g. substrate wetting property) and composites (weight percent of particulates in matrix) formation have not been fundamentally well understood. Within this spectrum, fundamental understanding of formation mechanisms of these patterns and composites are needed. Additionally, a new characterization technique is required to be able to measure the mechanical properties of fabricated composites and thin films. The pattern (Chapter 2) and composite (Chapter 3) formation presented in this thesis is based upon flexible blade flow-coating, an evaporative self-assembly method. The impact of substrate wetting, varying from being hydrophobic (water advancing contact angle 113°) to hydrophilic (water advancing contact angle 27°), on polymer pattern formation is examined here (Chapter 2). We observe a variety of polystyrene structures including dots, hyper-branched patterns, stripes and lines that can be deposited on substrates with a range of wetting properties. We propose the mechanism for these pattern formations as a balance between Marangoni instability and solute absorption. When adding quantum dot nanoparticles into the polymer (poly(methyl methacrylate) solution in the flow-coating process on hydrophilic substrates, we could obtain free-standing hierarchical nanocomposite films with alternating line and film structures (Chapter 3). The ability to guide assemblies of nanoparticles and polymers in designated areas in one step via flow-coating, provides new understanding of the flow competition of mixing two components which are both on the nanometer scale. Additionally, we introduce a method designated for ultra-thin film tensile testing (Chapter 4). We demonstrate the capability of this method by stretching two-dimensionally macroscopic, yet nanoscopically thin, polymer films on the surface of water. Through laser tracking of the force and displacement on the film, we characterize the full stress-strain response of brittle (polystyrene), ductile (polycarbonate), and rubbery (cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane) polymer thin films. In the brittle (polystyrene) films, we observe a precipitous decrease in mechanical properties (Young's modulus, strain at failure, and nominal stress at failure) for film thicknesses approaching the size of an individual polymer chain (~ 25 nm) yielding insights into polymer chain entanglement theory. To verify our hypothesis in polymer chain entanglement theory for determining failure properties of thin polymer films, we further study the molecular weight effect (853, 490, 137 and 61.8 kg/mol) of polystyrene on failure properties (Chapter 5). We compare maximum tensile strain, maximum tensile stress, and modulus respectively as a function of molecular weight as well as film thickness. We support our hypothesis on polymer inter-chain entanglements theory in thin polymer films by this molecular weight study. This thesis provides direct measurements of failure properties of ultra-thin films. These findings have important implications for the design of materials used in wide range of applications, as well as for the pursuit of new fundamental understanding of polymer physics in confined states.

Book excerpt: Executive Summary Our work was devoted to understanding the structure and properties of a class of thin film polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). PNCs are composed of polymer hosts into which nanoparticles (metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, nanorods, C60, nanotubes) are incorporated. PNCs exhibit a diverse range of functional properties (optical, electronic, mechanical, biomedical, structural), determined in part by the chemical composition of the polymer host and the type of nanoparticle. The properties PNCs rely not only on specific functional, size-dependent, behavior of the nanoparticles, but also on the dispersion, and organizational order in some cases, inter-nanoparticle separation distances, and on relative interactions between the nanoparticles and the host. Therefore the scientific challenges associated with understanding the interrelations between the structure and function/properties of PNCs are far more complex than may be understood based only on the knowledge of the compositions of the constituents. The challenges of understanding the structure-function behavior of PNCs are further compounded by the fact that control of the dispersion of the nanoparticles within the polymer hosts is difficult; one must learn how to disperse inorganic particles within an organic host. The goal of this proposal was to develop an understanding of the connection between the structure and the thermal (glass transition), mechanical and optical properties of a specific class of PNCs. Specifically PNCs composed of polymer chain grafted gold nanoparticles within polymer hosts. A major objective was to understand how to develop basic principles that enable the fabrication of functional materials possessing optimized morphologies and combinations of materials properties. Accomplishments: We developed: (1) fundamental principles that enabled the creation of thin film PNCs possessing more complex morphologies of homopolymers and block copolymer micellar systems [1-6]; (2) a new understanding of physical phenomena associated with the structure of PNC systems and the glass transition and dynamics [7-11], including surface dynamics [12, 13]; designed PNCs to understand the connection between structure and specific optical responses of the material [14, 15]; electrorheological phenomena [16-18]; coarsening/aggregation phenomena [19, 20]; directed assembly [21] and elastic mechanical properties of thin supported films [22]. We established procedures to design and control the spatial distribution of gold nanoparticles (Au-NP), onto which polystyrene (PS) chains were end-grafted, within thin film PS hosts.[1-3] We explained how enthalpic and entropic interactions between the grafted layers and the polymer host chains, the nanoparticle (NP) sizes and shapes determine the spatial distribution of NPs within the host (i.e.: the morphology). In brief, the chemistries of the grafted chains and the polymer hosts, the degrees of polymerization of grafted and host chains (N and P, respectively), and the surface grafting densities [Sigma] influence the thermodynamic interactions. Thin films are unique: the external interfaces (substrate and free surface) profoundly influence the spatial distribution of NPs within the PNC. For example, thin films are thermodynamically less stable than their bulk analogs due to the preferential attraction between the brush-coated nanoparticles and the external interfaces (i.e.: the free surface/polymer interface and the polymer/substrate interface). We investigated the organization of the brush-coated nanoparticles within a host composed on block copolymer micelles in a homopolymer [4, 5]. The first experiment looks at the use of gold nanoparticles as a localized heat source and the potential application as a cancer treatment. The second experiment, which is the real focus of this thesis, applies gold nanoparticles in the study of the free surface dynamics of glassy thin films. Gold nanoparticles have the ability to strongly absorb the energy in an incident laser beam and convert that energy into heat. Photothermal therapy is a proposed cancer treatment which exploits this ability to irreparably damage cancerous tissues surrounding gold nanoparticles. In the first chapter of this thesis we explain an experiment designed to probe the local temperatures achieved in such a process. Gold nanoparticles are used to stabilize the boundary of an inverse micelle system which contains an aqueous fluorescent dye solution on it's interior. A temperature dependent fluorescence intensity allows us to probe the temperature changes induced by laser irradiation. In the remainder of this thesis we describe a separate experiment involving the use of gold nanoparticles to study the free surface dynamics of thin glassy films. There is a growing body of evidence in the literature that thin polymer films in the glassy state exhibit heterogeneous dynamics; specifically that the first few nanometers from an air-polymer interface exhibit enhanced mobility relative to the interior of the film. The underlying mechanism responsible for this enhanced mobility remains elusive, however some believe it to be a direct consequence of the polymeric nature of these films. We describe in detail an experiment aimed at addressing this concern. We deposit gold nanoparticles onto the surface of a molecular (non-polymeric) glassy film and monitor their behaviour upon heating using atomic force microscopy. Our results clearly show the existence of enhanced surface mobility in the system studied and provide strong evidence that enhanced surface mobility should be expected in all glass forming systems.
