Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: A thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor was built and used to grow vertically and horizontally aligned carbon nanotube arrays. The as-grown nanotubes were investigated on a single tube level using near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) microscopy and PL excitation spectroscopy as well as Raman, atomic force and scanning electron microscopy. The PL of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in different surroundings and at temperatures down to 4 K was analyzed. Ultralong CVD-grown nanotubes were imaged on Si/SiO2 to determine their chirality and to check structural integrity along the nanotube length. Furthermore, ultralong SWNTs were manipulated (moved, bent and fractured) employing an AFM. Finally, a new approach to determine relative abundances and PL quantum yields of semiconducting SWNTs in dispersions is presented, which is based on statistical counting of individual nanotubes by means of PL spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes have been studied extensively in relation to fullerenes, and together with fullerenes have opened a new science and technology field on nano scale materials. A whole range of issues from the preparation, structure, properties and observation of quantum effects in carbon nanotubes in comparison with 0-D fullerenes are discussed. In addition, complementary reviews on carbon nanoparticles such as carbon nano-capsules, onion-like graphite particles and metal-coated fullerenes are covered. This book aims to cover recent research and development in this area, and so provide a convenient reference tool for all researchers in this field. It is also hoped that this book can serve to stimulate future work on carbon nanotubes.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) provides the simplest system to study the interaction between concentric tubes in carbon nanotubes. The inner and outer walls of a DWNT can be metallic (M) or semiconducting (S), and each of the four possible configurations (MUM, M©S, SUS, S©M) has different electronic properties. We analyze the Raman spectra from undoped and boron-doped chemical vapor deposition-derived DWNT bundles (CVD-DWNTs) that exhibit the "coalescence inducing mode" (CIM) as they are heat treated at temperatures between 12000C and 2000'C. We then report, for the first time, detailed Raman spectroscopy experiments carried out on individual DWNTs, where both concentric tubes of the same DWNT are measured under resonance conditions. A technique is developed that combines tunable Raman spectroscopy with Raman mapping procedures and electron beam lithography to enable the acquisition of Raman spectra from the individual constituents of the same isolated DWNT. By using the technique mentioned above, we measure resonant Raman scattering from 11 individual C60-derived double wall carbon nanotubes all having inner semiconducting (6,5) tubes and various outer metallic tubes. We report that in an individual DWNT an increase in the RBM frequency of the inner tube is related to an increase in the RBM frequency of the outer tube due to a decrease in the wall to wall distance. Finally, we use 40 laser excitation energies to analyze the differences in the Raman spectra from chemical vapor deposition-derived DWNT bundles (CVD-DWNTs), fullerene-derived DWNT bundles (C60-DWNTs) and individual fullerene-derived DWNTs with inner type I and type II semiconducting tubes paired with outer metallic tubes.

Being highly sensitive to the physical and chemical properties of materials, as well as to environmental effects that change these properties, Raman spectroscopy is now evolving into one of the most important tools for nanoscience and nanotechnology. In contrast to usual microscopyrelated techniques, the advantages of using light for nanoscience relate to both experimental and fundamental aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) is a new form of carbon, whose atomic arrangement is equivalent to a graphene sheet rolled into a cylinder in a seamless way. The typical diameter of a SWNT ranges from 0.6 nm to several nm and the typical length ranges from tens of nm to several cm. Due to its small diameter and high aspect ratio, a SWNT has very unique electronic and vibrational properties. The goals of this thesis work are to design and construct a Raman instrument capable of obtaining signals from many different types of individual SWNTs, to develop methods and tools to collect, organize and analyze large amounts of Raman spectra from them, to use resonant Raman spectroscopy to characterize individual SWNTs, and to investigate how their electronic and vibrational properties change under various conditions, such as strain, or different substrate interactions. A high-efficiency widely-tunable Raman instrument is developed for the study of SWNTs. The environmental effects on the electronic and vibrational properties are investigated by suspended SWNTs. Using the high-efficiency Raman instrument, weak optical transitions of metallic SWNTs are found. The effect of strain on the vibrational mode frequencies of SWNTs are studied.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene are at the center of a significant research effort due to their unique physical and chemical properties, which promise high technological impact. For the future development of all the foreseen applications, it is of particular interest the study of binding interactions between carbon nanostructures and functional groups. An appropriate method is the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which provides a large amplification of Raman signals when the probed molecule is adsorbed on a nanosized metallic surface. In this chapter, we present a review of principal results obtained applying SERS for the characterization of pristine and functionalized CNTs and graphene. The obtained results encourage us to consider SERS as a powerful method to obtain a rapid monitor of the procedures used to interface graphene and nanotubes.
