Book excerpt: It is the near future. Axel, a computer scientist, with broad, mechanically-inclined hobbies, is working on a prototype matter transmitter. It is erratic and, in an instant, he finds his consciousness has been transmitted across space. It has been received into the brain of a young, male humanoid immediately following the latters brain-death from a traumatic wound; one that has not, however, left any long-term organic injuries: Axel of Earth has become Lexar of Nandroth. Lexars race are called the Androthi. Their world has some geophysical similarities to Earth, and some similarity of life forms but with notable exceptions. The civilisations of the Androthi are roughly on the same technological level as 14th century Europe and Asia. Their overwhelming problem is that their world has been invaded by self-replicating robots, the mekkans, which have a highly advanced and to living creatures deadly technology. The mekkans are relatively few in number. They require, for their power and construction, minerals that they cannot easily find and mine. To obtain them, they have set about subjugating Nandroth and enslaving the Androthi, either by direct force or by fomenting internecine warfare. Their ultimate intention is to refuel their nuclear-powered space craft and continue their conquest of living worlds in the universe. Axel-Lexars self-appointed task is to get his fellow Androthi to accept who and what he is, and to get them to help him create, with what resources are available, strategies to defeat the mekkans. Above all, he wants to destroy the mekkans ability to threaten intelligent life forms on other worlds. The work deals, inter alia, with the nature of the linguistic problems faced by Axel on his becoming Lexar and the means by which he attempts to transform the local technology. He seeks to exploit special features of mekkan engineering and their rigid social structure, in order to subvert their seemingly unassailable power. But, in the meantime, there are defences to organise against the mekkans highly advanced weapons, and battles to be fought against other Androthi nations who have become the mekkans allies. To complicate his new life, he finds that Lexar is betrothed to the teenage daughter of the local Lord. She is a highly intelligent, independent and passionate individual, at first disbelieving, then suspicious and finally jealously protective.

It shows the triumph of the human spirit over evil as it ravages the country of Aksanda, a country of farmers and fishermen whose children are abducted and sold into slavery to foreigners at auctions. Homes are burned and people killed by hordes of evil elves called Bitters who organize for a battle at Orthrund against the dwarves living in the Aikasse Mountains. Bright Elves, men and dwarves, unite to defend Orthrund. Tall Sky, while helping a few runaways, is caught off guard by love with a feisty redhead named Melody and her little dragon, Daisy. They become involved with King Aryantes purge of slavery that has far-reaching effects on the country of Aksanda and beyond.

Book excerpt: Arrows in the Dark recounts and analyzes the many efforts of aid and rescue made by the Jewish community of Palestine--the Yishuv--to provide assistance to European Jews facing annihilation by the Nazis. Tuvia Friling provides a detailed account of the activities carried out at the behest of David Ben-Gurion and the Yishuv leadership, from daring attempts to extract Jews from Nazi-occupied territory, to proposals for direct negotiations with the Nazis. Through its rich array of detail and primary documentation, this book shows the wide scope and complexity of Yishuv activity at this time, refuting the idea that Ben-Gurion and the Yishuv ignored the plight of European Jews during the Holocaust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the interwar period cinema and literature seemed to be at odds with each other, part of the continuing struggle between mass and elite culture which so worried writers such as Aldous Huxley, T.S. Eliot and the Leavises. And this cultural divide appeared to be sharp evidence of a deeper struggle for control of the nation’s consciousness, not only between dominant and oppositional elements within Britain, but between British and American vales as well. On the one hand, films like Sing As We Go, Proud Valley, and The Stars Look Down consolidated the assumptions about the existence of a national rather than separate class identities. On the other hand, working-class literature such as Love on the Dole articulated working-class experience in a manner intended to bridge the gap between the ‘Two Englands’. This book, originally published in 1987, examines how two of the most significant cultural forms in Britain contributed indirectly to the stability of Britain in the interwar crisis, helping to construct a new class alliance. A major element in the investigation is an analysis of the mechanics of the development of a national cultural identity, alongside separate working-class culture, the development of the lower-middle class and the implications of the intrusion of Hollywood culture. The treatment throughout is thematic rather than text-oriented – works of Graham Greene, George Orwell, Bert Coombes, Evelyn Waugh, the British Documentary Film Movement and Michael Balcon are included in the wide range of material covered.
