Download or read book Experimental Approaches to Phonology written by Maria-Josep Sole and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-08-10 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging survey of experimental methods in phonetics and phonology shows the insights and results provided by different methods of investigation, including laboratory-based, statistical, psycholinguistic, computational-modeling, corpus, and field techniques. The five chapters in the first part of the book examine the recent history and interrelations of theory and method. The remaining 18 chapters are organized into parts devoted to four key current areas of research: phonological universals; phonetic variation and phonological change; maintaining, enhancing, and modeling phonological contrasts; and phonological knowledge. The book provides fresh insights into the findings and theoretical advances that emerge from experimental investigation of phonological structure and phonological knowledge, as well as critical perspectives on experimental methods in the perception, production, and modeling of speech. This book will be a valuable asset for all researchers into the sound structure of language, including scholars and advanced students of phonetics, phonology, speech science, psycholinguistics, and applied linguistics.

Book Synopsis Confucianism and Women by : Li-Hsiang Lisa Rosenlee
Download or read book Confucianism and Women written by Li-Hsiang Lisa Rosenlee and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confucianism and Women argues that Confucian philosophy—often criticized as misogynistic and patriarchal—is not inherently sexist. Although historically bound up with oppressive practices, Confucianism contains much that can promote an ethic of gender parity. Attacks on Confucianism for gender oppression have marked China's modern period, beginning with the May Fourth Movement of 1919 and reaching prominence during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. The West has also readily characterized Confucianism as a foundation of Chinese women's oppression. Author Li-Hsiang Lisa Rosenlee challenges readers to consider the culture within which Confucianism has functioned and to explore what Confucian thought might mean for women and feminism. She begins the work by clarifying the intellectual tradition of Confucianism and discussing the importance of the Confucian cultural categories yin-yang and nei-wai (inner-outer) for gender ethics. In addition, the Chinese tradition of biographies of virtuous women and books of instruction by and for women is shown to provide a Confucian construction of gender. Practices such as widow chastity, footbinding, and concubinage are discussed in light of Confucian ethics and Chinese history. Ultimately, Rosenlee lays a foundation for a future construction of Confucian feminism as an alternative ethical ground for women's liberation.

Book Synopsis Cuneiform Parallels to the Old Testament, Second Edition by : Robert W. Rogers
Download or read book Cuneiform Parallels to the Old Testament, Second Edition written by Robert W. Rogers and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-07-19 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The first major collection of cuneiform texts in English' Despite its age, this volume still has a major contribution to make. Unlike other collections, Rogers's volume includes the transliterated Akkadian for each text. This provides an invaluable access to the original texts without having a library that includes every volume of the original publications. A further asset is the collection of forty-eight excellent photographs and line-drawings. Included here are tablets, prisms, cylinders, seals, boundary stones, and bas reliefs. The bibliography is composed of two parts. The first includes the entries from Rogers's ÒList of Books Quoted or Mentioned,Ó but with numerous corrections and supplying much missing data. The second part is an updated list, organized by major cuneiform languages: Diverse Collections, Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Hurrian, Eblaite, and Ugaritic. This will direct the reader to the wealth of primary documents that is now our privilege to read.
