Book excerpt: Symptoms and signs in neurology and psychiatry typically present in the clinical context of other underlying conditions. When evaluating a patient, a physician may choose to review a diverse list of potential underlying diagnoses with the aid of the editor team's existing text: Neurological Differential Diagnosis: A Case-Based Approach. However, if the patient has a known pre-existing condition, the physician will need to consider a reverse approach - considering what complications of that condition may be associated with current symptoms. This book provides quick-reference, comprehensive, concise summaries of neurologic, psychiatric and medical diagnoses with a focus on neurologic and psychiatric implications of systemic disorders. A separate pharmacology section provides a consolidated review of potential neurologic and psychiatric adverse effects of medications. This book is an invaluable resource for a broad medical audience, from the medical student to the experienced consultant.

Book excerpt: "Adults aged 65 and older are the fastest-growing segment of the United States population. This increase in older adults will result in a greater number of individuals with age-related neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease, and frontotemporal lobular degeneration. Thus, it is imperative that healthcare professionals are prepared to diagnose and manage mild cognitive impairment and dementia. The purpose of this book is to provide trainees and early career professionals, particularly in psychiatry, psychology, neurology, geriatrics, family medicine, and internal medicine, with the information necessary to care for the often complex clinical presentations of older adults with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. The book is organized into three sections: (1) core concepts, (2) dementia syndromes, and (3) disease management. The chapters in section one focus on clinical knowledge and skills that can be applied across all syndromes, including conducting the diagnostic interview and neurologic examination, frequently used cognitive screening measures, neuropsychological assessment, neuroimaging, and developing differential diagnoses. Chapters in section two review the most common syndromes: mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease, frontotemporal lobular degeneration, Lewy body and Parkinson plus syndromes, rare and rapidly progressive dementias, and dementia due"--

The compendium of chapters, written by researchers, practitioners, and policy analysts from multiple disciplines provides a deep exploration of the current state of dementia care for Latinxs in the U.S. and around the globe. The volume is designed to increase and strengthen the collective scientific and sociocultural understanding of the epidemiological and biopsychosocial factors, as well as the overlapping systemic challenges that impact diagnosis and symptom management of Latinxs with dementia. The authors introduce policy options to reduce risk factors for dementia and present culturally-responsive interventions that meet the needs of Latinx patients and their caregivers. Highlighted topics featured in the book include: Contextual, cultural, and socio-political issues of Latinxs with dementia. New meta-analysis of dementia rates in the Americas and Caribbean. Dementia-related behavioral issues and placement considerations. Educational, diagnostic, and supportive psychosocial interventions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Cafer's Psychopharmacology series, Mood Stabilizers and Antiepileptics is an essential resource for any prescriber of psychiatric medication. Filled with pictures, this book makes complex concepts easy to understand and provides tools for remembering more than you thought possible. To help you match trade names with generic names of medications, this book features mascots akin to the Xyzal "Wise Owl" and Myrbetriq Bladder characters. Each medication's mascot is incorporated into a visual-mnemonic framework designed for recollection of pharmacokinetic interactions. For instance, CYP2C19 substrates are represented as flowers with CYP2C19 inhibitors as watering cans to make the flowers grow. CYP1A2 substrates are trees to be chopped down by axes (CYP1A2 inducers). Lithium is a battery and anything that interferes with its renal excretion is depicted as a battery charger. This book includes a subset of 46 medication mascots from Cafer's Psychopharmacology, which contains 270. Medications chosen for this edition include lithium, FDA-approved medications for seizure disorders (encompassing all non-lithium mood stabilizers) and all available benzodiazepines and barbiturates (several of which are antiepileptics). Medication mascots included: Lamotrigine (Lamictal), valproate (Depakene, Depakote), carbamazepine (Tegretol), oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), gabapentin (Neurontin), pregabalin (Lyrica), topiramate (Topamax), levetiracetam (Keppra), phenytoin (Dilantin), zonisamide (Zonegran), lacosamide (Vimpat), ethosuximide (Zarontin), eslicarbazepine (Aptiom), rufinamide (Banzel), felbamate (Felbatol), brivaracetam (Briviact), tiagabine (Gabitril), perampanel (Fycompa), cenobamate (Xcopri), vigabatrin (Sabril), cannabidiol (CBD, Epidiolex), phenobarbital (Luminal), primidone (Mysoline), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), butalbital (Fioricet), secobarbital (Seconal), pentobarbital (Nembutal), amobarbital (Amytal), thiopental (Sodium Pentothal), alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), diazepam (Valium), temazepam (Restoril), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), triazolam (Halcion), clorazepate (Tranxene), oxazepam (Serax), flurazepam (Dalmane), estazolam (Prosom), quazepam (Doral), clobazam (Onfi), midazolam (Versed), and flumazenil (Romazicon). Book excerpt: Alzheimer's disease was discovered over 100 years ago and still belongs to incurable neurological diseases; its pharmacotherapy is considered to be ineffective. This book presents contemporary views on the genetic, biochemical, and immunological determinants of this disease. This book also concerns the issue of Alzheimer's disease prevention through lifestyle and physical activity. Moreover, it describes the therapies used in Alzheimer's disease to slow the progression of the disease and delay its onset. Subsequently, the authors discuss experimental and clinical trials used now and in the near future. We hope that this book will help the readers to understand the complex mechanism leading to the development of Alzheimer's disease and indicate effective ways to prevent this disorder.

Book excerpt: Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (US Food and Drug Administration Regulation) (FDA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (US Food and Drug Administration Regulation) (FDA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 To minimize the risk of serious adverse health consequences or death from consumption of contaminated produce, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is establishing science-based minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce, meaning fruits and vegetables grown for human consumption. FDA is establishing these standards as part of our implementation of the FDA Food Safety and Modernization Act. These standards do not apply to produce that is rarely consumed raw, produce for personal or on-farm consumption, or produce that is not a raw agricultural commodity. In addition, produce that receives commercial processing that adequately reduces the presence of microorganisms of public health significance is eligible for exemption from the requirements of this rule. The rule sets forth procedures, processes, and practices that minimize the risk of serious adverse health consequences or death, including those reasonably necessary to prevent the introduction of known or reasonably foreseeable biological hazards into or onto produce and to provide reasonable assurances that the produce is not adulterated on account of such hazards. We expect the rule to reduce foodborne illness associated with the consumption of contaminated produce. This book contains: - The complete text of the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (US Food and Drug Administration Regulation) (FDA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section
