Book excerpt: The Futuristic India is an anthology dedicated as a token of love for my country on behalf of her 75 years of Independence. India is a land known for its classic motto- ‘unity in diversity’. A country like India had to face several obstacles and shackles in the path of freedom in various forms. The oppression of the British Empire over petty Indians were practiced all over the nation by slavery, exploitation of power and justice. People’s right to express their opinions was completely forbidden during colonial rule. Apart from exploitation, misuse of power was a great havoc for the indigenous citizens. They miserably toiled in the hands of colonialism. When colonization crossed the boundaries of humanity and human ethics, people set forth their path to counter the opposition. Be it British, Rome, France, Germany or Portuguese, Indians stood together in spite of the hardships encountered till then. They decided not to give up their liberty and fought for achieving their rights. Hundreds of freedom fighters, social reformers and patriots formed part of this revolutionary movement and started their journey of revenge with the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhiji. Breaking all the hurdles through Ahimsa, India finally attained liberty on 15th August 1947, thereby declaring herself as a fully democratic country. The achievement of freedom was not as a result of any political clout or power, it was the fruit of equality. People were unbiased in setting up ideologies to defeat the British colony with the same mind, unbiased. We stood together as one, irrespective of caste, creed, community, race or gender. Successive defeats of the British boosted the zeal and fervor of Indians and thereafter, the opposition undergone till then was eventually dwindled. All the efforts were executed with hard work, devotion, dedication and determination towards our motherland, India. When India sometimes had to compromise on her legacy, she was never tired of that. She was confident that her children would restore her legacy more than before by rescuing her from the black-handed colonies. She was rejuvenated with the courage and valor her children possessed. Therefore, it is indeed a prestigious moment for Indians to relish the glory of India after 75 years of replenishment. In this book, we will come to know the areas where India needs growth as well as nourishment to establish herself as a completely developed nation. I hope this book will surely be a fruitful asset for the younger generation to know more about India and her legacy. The book is a trilingual contribution by 30 budding and talented writers across India who are passionate in expressing their ideas for our citizens. The vision behind this book is to envisage upon the various aspects of development and empower the nation with its pride and heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book is a window on Indian cultural diplomacy, which is set against the backdrop of its ethos of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The World is a Family). It is pivoted to the 'Idea of India' that gets manifested through acceptance of diversity and celebration of pluralism. The Book in 15 chapters under 8 sections provides a comprehensive picture on the concept of cultural diplomacy; its relationship with public diplomacy and soft power; its place in the diplomatic architecture and its growing centrality. Unlike soft power, cultural diplomacy is not in the paradigm of power. The Book also provides an in depth study on the origins and evolution of Indian cultural diplomacy over the years. It reviews the role of the Ministries of Culture and External Affairs and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). It examines various instrumentalities, such as Cultural Agreements, Festivals of India, Cultural Centres and Chairs of Indian Studies, used by India, to achieve its objectives. The role played by Education, Media and Diaspora, as bridge builders is evaluated. The Book peeps into global cultural hubs, like the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and the working of cultural diplomacy at grassroots level at Chandigarh and Chicago. Two chapters in the Book look at the operation of cultural diplomacy in the Indian diplomatic missions and foreign diplomatic missions in India. This adds a practical dimension to the conceptual framework, as seen by practitioners of diplomacy. The final chapter provides an overview on the existing reality. A section on 'The Way Ahead' makes a number of practical recommendations in five clusters, to take cultural diplomacy to a higher plateau. Finally, it raises a set of pertinent issues and points for consideration by theoreticians and practitioners of cultural diplomacy. The Book would serve as a useful reference point for further studies, as it fills the existing void in the literature on cultural diplomacy.

Book excerpt: How does an extended stay in Japan influence Indian migrants’ sense of their identity as they adapt to a country very different from their own? The number of Indians in Japan is increasing. The links between Japan and India go back a long way in history, and the intricacy of their cultures is one of the many factors they have in common. Japanese culture and customs are among the most distinctive and complex in the world, and it is often difficult for foreigners to get used to them. Wadhwa focuses on the Indian Diaspora in Tokyo, analysing their lives there by drawing on a wealth of interviews and extensive participant observation. She examines their lifestyles, fears, problems, relations and expectations as foreigners in Tokyo and their efforts to create a 'home away from home' in Japan. This book will be of great interest to anthropologists and sociologists concerned with the impact of migration on diaspora communities, especially those focused on Japan, India or both.
