Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may or may not be a Nigerian or someone of Nigerian descent but you probably have met a Nigerian - in school, in your neighbourhood or at work. They seem to be everywhere all around the world; even in Alaska or in Mumbai. In fact, for some years now, Nigeria and her people has been more of an enigma than anything else for many people around the globe. But, this highly revealing book, Naked Truths about Nigeria contains enough details to enable the reader discover all he or she needs to know about Africa's most populous country, what makes her people tick and the reasons behind her failure to achieve greatness despite all her endowments.Inside you'll get to know about the major socio-political and the economic issues affecting the country, the author's views about them and what he suggests as possible solutions.Except: "These 'Big men' habitually jump in front of queues in public places such as banks, petrol filling stations, cinemas, night clubs and airports without the least bit of respect for their compatriots. Most would refuse to submit themselves to body searches or luggage examination which others go through and could even resort to physically abusing an attendant who insists on doing their job. Their disrespect for their fellow countrymen sometimes borders on disdain." Each of the chapters is devoted to discussing a particular problem in great detail and concludes with some suggestions. The author, Anthony O. Iduh is a full blooded Nigerian by parentage who spent his early years in Ghana. He came home to Nigeria during the oil boom era of the late 1970's when life was easy - he got his first job ever as a low level civil servant immediately after secondary school. He and most of his contemporaries then held high hopes about a better future for their country. He then left for over a decade for further studies in Canada and also lived in the United States but came back to meet a totally different country which had deteriorated in almost every respect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across America, strip clubs have come under attack by a politically aggressive segment of the Christian Right. Using plausible-sounding but factually untrue arguments about the harmful effects of strip clubs on their communities, the Christian Right has stoked public outrage and incited local and state governments to impose onerous restrictions on the clubs with the intent of dismantling the exotic dance industry. But an even larger agenda is at work, according to Judith Lynne Hanna. In Naked Truth, she builds a convincing case that the attack on exotic dance is part of the activist Christian Right’s “grand design” to supplant constitutional democracy in America with a Bible-based theocracy. Hanna takes readers onstage, backstage, and into the community and courts to reveal the conflicts, charges, and realities that are playing out at the intersection of erotic fantasy, religion, politics, and law. She explains why exotic dance is a legitimate form of artistic communication and debunks the many myths and untruths that the Christian Right uses to fight strip clubs. Hanna also demonstrates that while the fight happens at the local level, it is part of a national campaign to regulate sexuality and punish those who do not adhere to Scripture-based moral values. Ultimately, she argues, the naked truth is that the separation of church and state is under siege and our civil liberties—free speech, women’s rights, and free enterprise—are at stake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Africa, mature women have for decades mobilized the power of their nakedness in political protest to shame and punish male adversaries. This insurrectionary nakedness, often called genital cursing, owes its cultural potency to the religious belief that spirits residing in women's bodies can be unleashed to cause misfortune in their targets, including impotence, disease, and death. In Naked Agency, Naminata Diabate analyzes these collective female naked protests in Africa and beyond to broaden understandings of agency and vulnerability. Drawing on myriad cultural texts from social media and film to journalism and fiction, Diabate uncovers how women create spaces of resistance during socio-political duress, including such events as the 2011 protests by Ivoirian women in Côte d’Ivoire and Paris as well as women's disrobing in Soweto to prevent the destruction of their homes. Through the concept of naked agency, Diabate explores fluctuating narratives of power and victimhood to challenge simplistic accounts of African women's helplessness and to show how they exercise political power in the biopolitical era.

Book excerpt: A potpourri of witted versification of a social crusader, Naked Truth reveals the kowtowing status of a nation’s sociopolitical and economic stability. It is a collection aimed at social re-engineering/regeneration and liberation from the ramshackleness of a political, religious, economic and cultural cul-de-sac. Stylistically rich dialogue, music together with its accompaniments and different linguistic codes show the versatility of the poet. “Naked Truth” and other poems in this collection are prophetically insightful, casting vivid and exact characters that match our everyday experiences.

In the absence of an ethical foundation, corruption reverberates through public life, destabilizing countries and undermining human flourishing. Examining the many challenges facing Nigeria in the twenty-first century, Dr. Sunday Bobai Agang suggests that his homeland is experiencing just such a crisis – one rooted not in religion, economics, or politics but rather an eroding moral foundation. For a nation to thrive, he argues, its people must possess a moral and ethical vision characterized by sincerity and truth, love and unity. Far from representing impractical ideals, these are the virtues upon which a nation’s security and stability depend. Endangered Moral Values offers both a powerful warning of the dangers inherent in ignoring a society’s ethical and moral decay and a passionate invitation for citizens to work together towards a transformed future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new vocabulary is increasingly gaining prominence in Nigeria’s political lexicon. It is the nine-letter word – REVOLUTION. Hardly can any political event hold in the country today without the word “revolution” sneaking into direct discourse. Expectedly, discussants always disagree on this vexatious political jargon that while some segments of outlook would fall for it and actually want it bloody, others prefer a moderated approach, just as others caution against it in entirety – whether bloody or mild. The reality is that one does not need a soothsayer or contemporary political psychotherapist to recognize that God indeed has blessed Nigeria to be a great nation with ‘almost everything’ on earth. What then could be the malady militating against the structured development of this ‘Great Nation’ with ‘Great People’? Under a sane ambiance the membership of Nigeria in some major International organizations like the premier United Nations (UN) and her organs—The World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) et cetera; The ECOWAS sub-region, the Africa Union and the Commonwealth of nations, to mention but a few, is that Nigeria is very well positioned to be a primus inter pares in world affairs. Unfortunately, the state of affairs has not pointed in this direction. Domestically, the country is stagnate, decayed and trapped in corruption and at present utterly different from the Nigeria we used to know as productive, thriving nation with robust infrastructure that was well-organized with a vibrant economy. The “Giant of Africa” that a short while ago celebrated her fiftieth year independence—as a matter of fact, is a society now completely the reverse of the one symbolized by former patriotic heroes and nationalist leaders—the likes of the Great Zik of Africa (of blessed memory), with his compatriots who deftly wrestled independence from British colonialism. Giant in the Sun Echoes of Looming Revolution evokes the mêlée of a people as portrayed by a multitalented Author, encapsulating his qualms for a Great Country that may never be, as Revolution looms in Nigeria: Do not touch her! Please do not ruin her! Nigeria our beloved country!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elections have been central to regime collapse in Nigeria because they neither passed the test of citizens' acceptability nor electoral neutrality. They always pushed the country to a dangerous brink which she has often survived after serious constitutional and political bruises. The general election of 1964 rocked the delicate balance of the country resulting in the military coup of January 15, 1966 and a thirty month civil war. The subsequent effort of the military at restructuring the country did not go far enough to win the civic confidence of the people. The military availed itself of another opportunity of tinkering with the system in 1993. However, it demonstrated that it was not immune to civic dishonesty when it annulled the widely acclaimed free and fair presidential election in June 12, 1993. By fits and starts, Nigeria held another election in 1999 which was tolerated only because of citizens' fatigue of military rule. The elections of 2003 and 2007 were classic examples of make-belief democracy. The feeding of inequity and, if you will, domination, persisted. A combination of fortune, trickery and arm twisting produced a power shift in favour of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Azikwe Jonathan in April 2011. The subsequent attempt by the north to create a strategic consensus did not save it from being pushed into fringe politics forcing some of its spokespersons to vow that they will make governance impossible. The election was better than the worst but much still remains to be done.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a condensed body of thought, and each paragraph holds body of thought/idea that involved some meditation. Richard, through his work, shows he is a rare breed, an unorthodox thinker who has ruffled the self-satisfied colonial and post-colonial establishment that once held his thoughts captive. The text is a tour de force setting the records straight with historicizing analysis about one of the major issues that purport to define who we are and continue to do so now, illuminating the biggest, most important challenge we face in our time. The text is a magisterial work with impeccable and intelligible argued positions and a benchmark for nation-building. It defends with lapidary certitude the proposition that nation-building is not something that is given to someone by another; rather, it is something that can only be acquired by ones self through self-discovery. Victor Ikeji
