Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers Rose's life from 1945 to 1985. It is a thoughtful, heartfelt journey from childhood idyll in Derbyshire and Cornwall, through her student nurse days in Sheffield, midwifery training in London, the "Swinging Sixties" as a single mother, to family life and eventual divorce. She faced family tragedy in a large, boisterous family with an Irish GP father, Catholicism which she says was an unwelcome imposition and sexual violence. She went through hard times on her own in the big city. Eventually remarrying and moving to Kent she became an NHS statistic in 1985 as a work-injured nurse no longer able to work. The conduct of her employer, the National Health Service in making sure she did not receive compensation is disgraceful. This is where the book ends. Naked Nurse because of the vulnerability of student nurses, of young women in general in the 1960s. It is a harsh regime that Rose describes in the book through chapters eight to thirteen (there are thirty in total), though there are also highs. She laments some aspects of the standards of modern nursing and hopes they at least did not have to put up with the bullying and process of dehumanization that was more associated with military training. You will laugh many times while reading the book. At other times you will want to weep.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to challenge the prevailing attitudes and images of nursing homes in America, the authors have written a touching book about the people and the relationships that are a part of nursing home care. Their extensive study of and experience with nursing home residents and caregivers reveal that our negative and often painful thoughts about nursing homes are not always well-founded. The authors effectively use monologue and dialogue to take the reader into the world of the nursing home to observe the work of the nursing home staffs, from administrators to housekeepers, as they become surrogate families and friends of the patients. Most moving are the thoughts and words of the residents themselves, especially as they describe their initial horror and anger at being in the nursing home, and their feelings of abandonment and loss of self-esteem. Valuable for both undergraduate and graduate courses in nursing, social work, psychology, death and dying, pastoral care and counseling, this comprehensive volume is useful as a primary or supplementary text. BACKCOVER COPY In an attempt to challenge the prevailing attitudes and images of nursing homes in America, David Oliver and Sally Tureman have written a touching book about the people and the relationships that are a part of nursing home care. The Human Factor in Nursing Home Care provides a new and refreshing perspective of those who provide care in nursing homes and those who receive it. And, in the end, it challenges the reader to consider his or her own images of aging and of dying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advocates the application of holistic and humanistic approaches in elderly care and services to achieve the goal of ageing with dignity in Hong Kong and Asia. It responds to the needs of an increasing ageing population that has to deal with related health needs in long-term care, community health and social services, particularly for chronic conditions and psychosocial support. The book consists of three sections on policy and development of aged care, holistic and humanistic care for older adults, and capacity building for ageing with dignity, respectively. Topics include the latest initiatives in aged care, appropriate services and delivery models, lifestyle modification, psychosocial and environmental considerations, professional development, technologies, and social capital. The chapters review and discuss these issues within a global context, illustrated by examples from Asian countries, underpinned by locally based empirical research. Contributors include academics and practitioners from diversified professional backgrounds that include medicine, nursing, pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, dietetics, and allied health. The book traverses into territories in the social sciences, life sciences, and sports sciences, while also touching on areas of business and administration, hospitality, law, public policy, and information technology in connection with public health. The contents serve as a topical reference for tertiary studies in ageing and related disciplines such as well-being and are also useful to policymakers, community and public health practitioners, health executives and interns working in areas of policy and practice pertinent to care development, health delivery models, planning, quality, ethics, better health promotion, professional training, and monitoring for older adults.

Book excerpt: A poignant, uplifting, brilliantly insightful story of one woman's end-of-life reckoning with her past, her lost daughter and herself, for readers of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Still Alice and Elizabeth Is Missing. When her husband left her with a baby, a toddler and a fledgling business, Francesca managed--she wasn't always gentle or patient, but the business thrived and Chris and Angelina had food to eat. At nearly 70, she feels she's earned a peaceful retirement. But when a massive stroke leaves her voiceless, partially paralyzed and wholly reliant on the staff of an extended care facility, it seems her freedom is lost. However, Francesca is still clear-headed and sharp, and she knows one thing: she wants to live. She savours her view of a majestic chestnut tree through the hospital window, and speaks in her mind to her beloved friend Anna, dead for two years. The daily tasks and dramas of the rotating crew of care aides tether her to the world: Young Lily, eager to fall in love and regularly falling apart when things don't work out; Michiko, with her spiky hair and tattoos and wicked sense of humour; Molly, endlessly kind and skilled in her work; Blaire, cold and enigmatic. Amidst the indignities of bed baths and a feeding tube, Francesca is surprised to experience flashes of hilarity and joy, even the blossoming of a new friendship with a fellow patient. But as she reflects to Anna on her dutiful son and her troubled and absent daughter, regrets and painful realizations rise to the surface. For the first time, there is nowhere for Francesca to hide from her own choices, and she must reckon with her past before it's too late. A Funny Kind of Paradise is a warm and insightful novel about one woman's opportunity for reinvention--for unconditional love, acceptance and closure--in the unlikeliest of places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former paramedic’s visceral, poignant, and mordantly funny account of a decade spent on Atlanta’s mean streets saving lives and connecting with the drama and occasional beauty that lies inside catastrophe. In the aftermath of 9/11 Kevin Hazzard felt that something was missing from his life—his days were too safe, too routine. A failed salesman turned local reporter, he wanted to test himself, see how he might respond to pressure and danger. He signed up for emergency medical training and became, at age twenty-six, a newly minted EMT running calls in the worst sections of Atlanta. His life entered a different realm—one of blood, violence, and amazing grace. Thoroughly intimidated at first and frequently terrified, he experienced on a nightly basis the adrenaline rush of walking into chaos. But in his downtime, Kevin reflected on how people’s facades drop away when catastrophe strikes. As his hours on the job piled up, he realized he was beginning to see into the truth of things. There is no pretense five beats into a chest compression, or in an alley next to a crack den, or on a dimly lit highway where cars have collided. Eventually, what had at first seemed impossible happened: Kevin acquired mastery. And in the process he was able to discern the professional differences between his freewheeling peers, what marked each—as he termed them—as “a tourist,” “true believer,” or “killer.” Combining indelible scenes that remind us of life’s fragile beauty with laugh-out-loud moments that keep us smiling through the worst, A Thousand Naked Strangers is an absorbing read about one man’s journey of self-discovery—a trip that also teaches us about ourselves.

This brilliantly imagined novel brings us the story of Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio. Nel and Sula's devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No official statistics are kept for the number of hospital patients, in particular older people, who are subjected to neglect and abuse. That is, left malnourished and dehydrated, in pain, allowed to develop agonising and fatal pressure sores, not taken to the toilet, left to lie in their own bodily waste, cared for in a filthy environment and at risk of infection, ignored, allowed to fall over repeatedly, not spoken to, left naked or dressed in other patients' clothes - and discharged from hospital prematurely. This book bears witness to all these practices and more. Setting out a wealth of evidence not previously brought together, Michael Mandelstam shows beyond question that neglectful care is a systemic blight, rather than mere local blemish, within our health services. He analyses the causes and factors involved, reveals the widespread denial and lack of accountability on the part of those responsible - and spells out the political, moral, professional and legal implications of this failure to care for the most vulnerable of patients with humanity and compassion. Most important, Mandelstam points to the main obstacles to a solution - and to how they can be removed and change be accomplished. This book should be read by anyone concerned with the state of our health services, including National Health Service users, government policy makers and planners, public health practitioners and academics and researchers.
