Book excerpt: After thirty plus years teaching high school and college Spanish, there are many things that have not been taught at those levels. Remember how frustrating it was wondering how to say words and phrases about sex, and especially gay sex? So, I decided to compile this book just for you so, you do not have to wonder any more! This book will include just about everything that you have ever wanted to know and much, much more! A great percent of the book was written on my travels to the many Spanish speaking countries and through interviews with countless native speakers. Gay, of course! I have been to Spain four times spending weeks upon weeks in most all of the provinces. Over the past 35 years my travels to Latin America have been more extensive, living and studying in Mexico for over a year with over 40 return trips to most of the entire country exploring the enriching culture of our neighbors to the southern boarder. Within the past 15 years, I have explored the colorful, cultural riches of Guatemala spending months with the gualtemaltecos. I have also had the pleasure of three fantastic, magical adventures to Peru, which were truly spiritual experiences that enlightened and enriched me greatly. Other Spanish speaking countries that I have traveled and explored are Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Panama, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and yes, Argentina. I wish to thank many friends and colleagues for their encouragement to write this book. They have read my work and have given me many helpful suggestions to finalize the process.

Book excerpt: The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clarks classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with todays depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time. Borzello explores the role of the nude in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with a tale of life, death and resurrection an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Subsequent chapters take a thematic approach, focusing in turn on Body art and Performance art, the new perspectives of women artists, the nude in painting, portraiture and sculpture and in its most extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone. The final chapter illustrates radical developments in art and culture over the last decade, focusing in particular on artworks by women, trans artists and artists of colour. Borzello links these works to their art-historical and political predecessors, demonstrating the continually unending capacity of the nude to disrupt traditional hierarchies and gender categories in life and art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the central significance of sexualized female corpses in modern and contemporary Hispanic and Anglophone crime fiction. Beginning with the foundational detective fictions of the nineteenth century, it draws from diverse subgenres to describe a transatlantic tradition of necropornography characterized by lascivious interest in female cadavers, dissection, morgues, femicide, and snuff movies. Hard-boiled and police procedural classics from the U.S. and the U.K. are juxtaposed with texts by established Spanish and Spanish American genre masters and with obscure works that prefigure the contemporary transmedial boom in corpse-centered fictions. The rhetoric and aesthetics of necropornographic crime fiction are related to those of popular crime journalism and forensic-science television dramas. This study argues that crime fiction has long fixated disproportionately on the corpses of beautiful young white women and continues to treat their deaths and autopsies as occasions for male visual pleasure, male subjective self-affirmation and male homosocial bonding.

Book excerpt: Joyful Babel: Translating Hélène Cixous is a selection of critical essays on translation and the writing of Hélène Cixous, with contributions from translators of her texts into different languages and cultures. The present volume is unique in that it is the first collection of essays on the work of Cixous from the perspective of translation. It presents new explorations into translating as process, theory and practice, and new insights on Cixous’s fictional and theoretical world. It is an international collection, open to readings of Cixous’s writing, including the theoretical, fictional and dramatic discourses. The variety of intersecting subjects and perspectives provokes, interrogates and explores Cixous’s theory and writing in ways that will contribute to a deeper understanding of her oeuvre, will motivate new debates as well as inspire new research. This book is addressed to a wide range of readers, from those who initiate themselves to translation or already practise it, to readers and critics of Cixous’s work, linguists and translation theorists, scholars interested in gender and postcolonial issues, and critics of contemporary literature; thus, not only academics but also professional translators, as well as drama/theatre staging practitioners.

Book excerpt: This monograph investigates the temporal properties of those predicates referring to individuals – the so-called individual-level (IL) predicates – in contrast to those known as stage-level (SL) predicates. Many of the traditional tenets attributed to the IL/SL dichotomy are not solidly founded, this book claims, as it examines current theoretical issues concerning the syntax/semantics interface such as the relation between semantic properties of predicates and their syntactic structure. By using the contrast found in Spanish copular clauses (ser vs. estar), Individuals in Time shows that the conception of IL predicates as permanent and stative cannot be maintained. The existence of nonstative IL predicates is demonstrated through analyzing the correlation between the syntactic presence of certain projections (specifically, prepositional complements) and process-like aspect properties. This detailed examination of IL predicates in the domains of inner aspect, outer aspect, and tense will be welcomed by scholars and students with an interest in event structure, tense, and aspect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A delightful and informative look at nudism throughout history and around the world.” —The Seattle Times People have been getting naked in public for reasons other than sex for centuries. But as Mark Haskell Smith reveals, being a nudist is more complicated than simply dropping trou. “Nonsexual social nudism,” as it’s called, rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century. Intellectuals, outcasts, and health nuts from Victorian England and colonial India to Belle Époque France and Gilded Age Manhattan disrobed and wrote manifestos about the joys of going clothing-free. From stories of ancient Greek athletes slathered in olive oil to the millions of Germans who fled the cities for a naked frolic during the Weimar Republic to American soldiers given “naturist” magazines by the Pentagon in the interest of preventing sexually transmitted diseases, this book uncovers nudism’s amusing and provocative past. Coated in multiple layers of high SPF sunblock, Haskell Smith publicly disrobes for the first time in Palm Springs; observes the culture of family nudism in a clothing-free Spanish town; and travels to the largest nudist resort in the world, a hedonist’s paradise in the south of France. He reports on San Francisco’s controversial ban on public nudity, participates in a week of naked hiking in the Austrian Alps, and caps off his adventures with a week on a Caribbean cruise known as the Big Nude Boat. Equal parts cultural history and gonzo participatory journalism, Naked at Lunch is “an absolute hoot” (Los Angeles Magazine) and “a total joy” (Meghan Daum). “Smith puts on his reporter’s hat and takes off everything else as he explores the history and sociology of nudism.” —Los Angeles Times
