Being an outsider puts one in a position of exclusion while simultaneously giving a better vantage point for viewing the differences. Working and traveling in a foreign country means adapting oneself to native culture for anything to be accomplished. Radius-Kasik tells her experience with humor and humility, exploring and honoring the differences. In her journey, relationships became friendships, and deepening friendships challenged her to find her way into a place and a people so unlike anything she'd ever known, and yet so very like everything she'd ever known. A conundrum for sure, but mixing cultures is always a conundrum. Lutheran Mzungu is not a travel guide, but it might serve well for the reader about to embark on a first African experience. All a reader needs is an interest in exploring preconceived ideas about cultural differences between Africans and Westerners.

I looked toward Lake Victoria, into cloud puffs, and heard bird wings flapping, or Director Dan's rooster crowing next door. Henry's voice would rise and I'd look back to see someone else entering his office, bodies collecting in Henry's realm, voices mingling languages and hands clasping in greeting. I worked at this college and assisted with communications and the Annual Scientific Conference and participation in the agricultural show. Passing through the gate each morning meant greeting Fred, John, and other guards and signing the logbook. Greetings are important and required stopping to inquire about each other's evening and night's sleep and morning meal, often while holding hands. Kenyans taught me about compassion and living in difficult situations. In later stories people like Leviticus Carp--who can be a very objectionable person--reveal their inner good qualities in time for them to be reconciled with the larger society from which they are alienated--often through their own preference. I am also trying to describe places and events that I have seen.
