Excerpt: Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of 1.46, it is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. The name "Sirius" is derived from the Ancient Greek Seirios ("glowing" or "scorcher"). The star has the Bayer designation Alpha Canis Majoris ( CMa). What the naked eye perceives as a single star is actually a binary star system, consisting of a white main sequence star of spectral type A1V, termed Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion of spectral type DA2, termed Sirius B. The distance separating Sirius A from its companion varies between 8.1 and 31.5 AU. Sirius appears bright because of both its intrinsic luminosity and its proximity to Earth. At a distance of 2.6 parsecs (8.6 ly), the Sirius system is one of Earth's near neighbors. Sirius A is about twice as massive as the Sun and has an absolute visual magnitude of 1.42. It is 25 times more luminous than the Sun but has a...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of early Byzantine Christianity, monastic rules acknowledged but discouraged the homosexual impulses of adult males. What most disturbed monastic leaders was adolescent males being accepted as novices; adult men were considered unable to control their sexual desires for these "beautiful boys." John Chrysostom, the Archbishop of Constantinople (397-407), virulently denounced homosexuality, but was virtually the only Byzantine cleric to do so. Penances traditionally attached to heterosexual sins--including remarriage after divorce or widowhood--have always been much more severe than those for a variety of homosexual acts or relationships. Just as Byzantine churches have found ways to accommodate sequential marriages and other behavior once stridently condemned, this book argues, it is possible for Byzantine Christianity to make pastoral accommodations for gay relationships and same-sex marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the household cat to horses that can fly, a surprisingly wide range of animals feature in religions and mythologies all across the world. The same animal can take on different roles: the raven can be a symbol of evil, a harbinger of death, a wise messenger or a shape-changing trickster. In Norse mythology, Odin's magical ravens perch on his shoulders and bring him news. This compendium draws upon religious texts and myths to explore the ways sacred traditions use animal images, themes and associations in rituals, ceremonies, texts, myths, literature and folklore across the world. Sections are organized by the main animal classifications such as mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians and insects. Each chapter covers one significant grouping (such as dogs, cats or horses), first describing an animal scientifically and then detailing the mythological attributes. Numerous examples cite texts or myths. A final section covers animal hybrids, animal monsters and mythical animals as well as stars, constellations and Zodiac symbols. An appendix describes basic details of the religions and mythologies covered. A glossary defines uncommon religious terms and explains scientific animal names.

Book excerpt: The study of the creation of canine breeds in early modern Europe, especially Spain, illustrates the different constructs against which notions of human identity were forged. This book is the first comprehensive history of early modern Spanish dogs and it evaluates how two of Spain’s most celebrated and canonical cultural figures of this period, the artist Diego Velázquez and the author Miguel de Cervantes, radically question humankind’s sixteenth-century anthropocentric self-fashioning. In general, this study illuminates how Animal Studies can offer new perspectives to understanding Hispanism, giving readers a fresh approach to the historical, literary and artistic complexity of early modern Spain.

Book excerpt: What made Athena furious with a local weaver that she transformed her into Greek mythology's first spider woman, Arachne? What is the tall tale behind Filipino folklore's sea serpent Bakunawa, who flies through the night skies devouring moons? What is the symbolism behind French folktale's infamous night rider, Cheval Mallet? We have all been exposed to a mythological beast in one form or another. Whether it is the three headed guard dog Fluffy in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, or even the story of Smaug in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth in The Hobbit; all these pop culture mythical creatures have a deep connection to the mythologies and folktales of ancient cultures. Where did they come from? What relevance do they serve in mythology? Why are some so obscure, while others become pop-culture enigmas? Get the answer to these questions, and learn about beasts from different world cultures. Folklorist Zayden Stone dives deep into the stories of these magical beasts and provides a fictional anecdote, a retelling of the original myths, an analysis of the symbolism and relevance of the creatures, and then pairs it with some beautiful black and white illustrations reimagined by artist Herdhian. In the Mythical Creatures and Mythological Beasts book, the illustrated guide takes you through six themes that have been specifically chosen since they are consistent across cultures. The categories include: arthropods for insects, crustaceans, and arachnids; avian for birds; canines for wolves and dogs; serpents for snakes and dragons; ungulates for hooved animals like horses and cows; and aquatic for water dwelling beasts. Presenting the creatures in categories makes it easier to see what the beasts have in common. You will find some overlapping themes across ancient cultures that point to universal ideas in how humans perceive the world. If you wonder where your favorite creature is, you will probably find them within these pages, even if they do not have their own chapter. For example, the ever-popular Pegasus can be found in the tale of the Gorgon sisters. He also had a half-brother, Arion, who features in the ungulates section. There is also a brilliant white-winged horse from Islamic tradition which may sound very familiar to Pegasus as well. If you have a love for the myths and want to learn about the unique beasts that dwell within them, this book is a great way to do it. Not only will you learn about ones you may have never heard of, but you will also be able to draw parallels between cultures and see how they interpreted their surroundings through stories of mythical creatures and magical beasts.

Book excerpt: The author traces the mythological origin and meaning of the Greek Cerberus to an Indian prototype in the dogs of Yama, mentioning also analogous figures in mythologies of other races. "A valuable contribution to the study of mythology." -Elias Margolis in the Pueblo Star-Journal. "A careful compilation of the singular views of the famous mythical dog that is guardian of the realms of the dead, as these views have been expressed in classic art, and in Roman, Hindu, Persian and other literatures. The study is certainly a curiosity, but at the same time much more than this. It is the outworking of an idea that is found securely lodged in .the literature of many nations." -Journal of Education, Boston. "In his interesting and suggestive little essay, Professor Bloomfield explains the two heads which Cerberus so frequently has in Greek vase-paintings, and accounts step by step for the transition from the sun and moon as. the gates of heaven, to Cerberus, the guardian of the doors of hell." -Academy, London.

Book excerpt: When Erika adopted Mila, she naively believed that, like instant soup, she wouldn’t have to go through the process of cooking all the ingredients from scratch. She wouldn’t have to house train, obedience train or intensely socialise a mature dog. Mila quickly proved how misguided she was! Her favourite pastime was zealously chewing Persian rugs while the living room became her personal toilet. Alternatively, when asked to sit, lie down, or come, she’d throw herself on her back in submission and refuse to move. Thunder and fireworks sent her rushing around in a mindless panic, while the sight of other dogs turned her into a screaming banshee. Does this sound familiar? Introducing From Wolf to Supermutt and Everything In Between, a book to guide you and your dog to happiness and harmony. Predominantly written with information based on research studies, the book also includes anecdotes based on Erika’s own experience to give it the personal factor. Erika’s portrayal of all things canine begins with their evolution and domestication, the fundamental processes that triggered our ongoing relationship with dogs. Additionally, the book banishes a few myths, and explores the significance of nature vs nurture, including the importance of genetics, breeding and socialisation. Understanding how our dogs think and learn, knowing the source of canine behaviour problems, including the impact of detrimental and positive training methods, we can pre-empt many behaviour problems and positively shape our dogs into happy hounds.
