Book excerpt: Everyone has a book inside. The question simply becomes will you write the book inside of you? Not everyone has the discipline or desire to do so. Everyone is a story based upon one’s unique experiences, wisdom, insights, and the life GOD has gifted you with. AS simple as it seems what you give back to GOD is your gift to him. The book you write upon this earth is your gift in time to the Kree-a-tor divine. This book is one of my gifts back to you GOD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Untangles the intricately knotted issues around hip-hop culture and its treatment of young black women Pimps Up, Ho’s Down pulls at the threads of the intricately knotted issues surrounding young black women and hip hop culture. What unravels for Tracy D. Sharpley-Whiting is a new, and problematic, politics of gender. In this fascinating and forceful book, Sharpley-Whiting, a feminist writer who is a member of the hip hop generation, interrogates the complexities of young black women's engagement with a culture that is masculinist, misogynistic, and frequently mystifying. Beyond their portrayal in rap lyrics, the display of black women in music videos, television, film, fashion, and on the Internet is indispensable to the mass media engineered appeal of hip hop culture, the author argues. And the commercial trafficking in the images and behaviors associated with hip hop has made them appear normal, acceptable, and entertaining - both in the U.S. and around the world. Sharpley-Whiting questions the impacts of hip hop's increasing alliance with the sex industry, the rise of groupie culture in the hip hop world, the impact of hip hop's compulsory heterosexual culture on young black women, and the permeation of the hip hop ethos into young black women's conceptions of love and romance. The author knows her subject from the inside. Coming of age in the midst of hip hop's evolution in the late 1980s, she mixed her graduate studies with work as a runway and print model in the 1990s. Her book features interviews with exotic dancers, black hip hop groupies, and hip hop generation members Jacklyn “Diva” Bush, rapper Trina, and filmmaker Aishah Simmons, along with the voices of many “everyday” young women. Pimps Up, Ho’s Down turns down the volume and amplifies the substance of discussions about hip hop culture and to provide a space for young black women to be heard. 2007 Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Emily Toth Award

Book excerpt: La 4e de couverture indique : "Typically, more than half the top rap songs in the country are the work of Southern artists. In a world still stuck in the East/West coast paradigm of the '90s, the simple fact is that Southern hip-hop has dominated the genre - and defined the culture - for years. Roni Sarig explains how and why." "From the crime-ridden wards of New Orleans to the upscale suburbs of Atlanta, from the secluded outpost of Virginia Beach to the international hub of Miami - plus all the small Southern towns in between - Third Coast chronicles the artists, labels, and communities that rewrote the script on how hip-hop could sound, signify, and get sold."

Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, African Americans in New Orleans helped define the genres of jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, and funk. In recent decades, younger generations of New Orleanians have created a rich and dynamic local rap scene, which has revolved around a dance-oriented style called "bounce." Hip-hop has been the latest conduit for a "New Orleans sound" that lies at the heart of many of the city's best-known contributions to earlier popular music genres. Bounce, while globally connected and constantly evolving, reflects an enduring cultural continuity that reaches back and builds on the city's rich musical and cultural traditions. In this book, the popular music scholar and filmmaker Matt Miller explores the ways in which participants in New Orleans's hip-hop scene have collectively established, contested, and revised a distinctive style of rap that exists at the intersection of deeply rooted vernacular music traditions and the modern, globalized economy of commercial popular music. Like other forms of grassroots expressive culture in the city, New Orleans rap is a site of intense aesthetic and economic competition that reflects the creativity and resilience of the city's poor and working-class African Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here in Louisiana, we make music. When I say we make music, I mean that we don't just play music--we invent it, too. We take the raw materials of music--of sound--and make something new with it." --From the introduction Music writer and cultural historian Roger Hahn provides an intimate glimpse into a music genesis and legacy that has spread across the globe. From creating new categories of music like jazz and zydeco to adding new sounds to older genres like rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, funk, and hip-hop, Louisiana has put her stamp on them all. With an introduction that includes an impressive overview of the state's contribution to America's music history, Hahn launches into biographies of twenty musicians and musical groups who have shaped--and are shaping--the face of our musical landscape. Included are well-known figures like Louis Armstrong, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, The Boswell Sisters, Mahalia Jackson, Harry Connick, Jr., Li'l Wayne, and Hunter Hayes. Right beside them are lesser-known but no less significant or influential figures, including Jelly Roll Morton, Clifton Chenier, Steve Riley & The Mamou Players, Trombone Shorty, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Buddy Guy. The biographies present a small capsule of the artists' cultural inheritance, influence, and accomplishments. A full-color portrait by Louisiana artist Chris Osborne accompanies each profile in this testament to Louisiana's musical legacy.
