Book excerpt: Without question, this is a classic by one of the most exciting new authors in the UFO field today. After reading it, your view of reality will never be the same. The owl has held a place of reverence and mystique throughout history. And as strange as this might seem, owls are also showing up in conjunction with the UFO experience.Mike Clelland has collected a wealth of first-hand accounts in which owls manifest in the highly charged moments that surround alien contact. There is a strangeness to these accounts that defy simple explanations. This book explores implications that go far beyond what more conservative researchers would dare consider. But the owl connection encompasses more than the UFO experience. It also includes profound synchronicities, ancient archetypes, dreams, shamanistic experiences, personal transformation, and death. From the mythic legends of our ancient past to the first-hand accounts of the UFO abductee, owls are playing some vital role. This is also a deeply personal story. It is an odyssey of self-discovery as the author grapples with his own owl and UFO encounters. What plays out is a story of transformation with the owl at the heart of this journey.

Even on the hottest summer days this book will transport you.” —Helen Macdonald, author of H is for Hawk, in Kirkus I saw my first Blakiston’s fish owl in the Russian province of Primorye, a coastal talon of land hooking south into the belly of Northeast Asia . . . No scientist had seen a Blakiston’s fish owl so far south in a hundred years . . . When he was just a fledgling birdwatcher, Jonathan C. Slaght had a chance encounter with one of the most mysterious birds on Earth. Bigger than any owl he knew, it looked like a small bear with decorative feathers. He snapped a quick photo and shared it with experts. Soon he was on a five-year journey, searching for this enormous, enigmatic creature in the lush, remote forests of eastern Russia. That first sighting set his calling as a scientist. Despite a wingspan of six feet and a height of over two feet, the Blakiston’s fish owl is highly elusive. They are easiest to find in winter, when their tracks mark the snowy banks of the rivers where they feed. They are also endangered. And so, as Slaght and his devoted team set out to locate the owls, they aim to craft a conservation plan that helps ensure the species’ survival. This quest sends them on all-night monitoring missions in freezing tents, mad dashes across thawing rivers, and free-climbs up rotting trees to check nests for precious eggs. They use cutting-edge tracking technology and improvise ingenious traps. And all along, they must keep watch against a run-in with a bear or an Amur tiger. At the heart of Slaght’s story are the fish owls themselves: cunning hunters, devoted parents, singers of eerie duets, and survivors in a harsh and shrinking habitat. Through this rare glimpse into the everyday life of a field scientist and conservationist, Owls of the Eastern Ice testifies to the determination and creativity essential to scientific advancement and serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty, strength, and vulnerability of the natural world.

Book excerpt: Owls are birds from the order Strigiformes, which includes over 200 species of mostly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey typified by an upright stance, a large, broad head, binocular vision, binaural hearing, sharp talons, and feathers adapted for silent flight. Exceptions include the diurnal northern hawk-owl and the gregarious burrowing owl. Owls hunt mostly small mammals, insects, and other birds, although a few species specialize in hunting fish. They are found in all regions of the Earth except polar ice caps and some remote islands. Owls are divided into two families: the true (or typical) owl family, Strigidae, and the barn-owl family, Tytonidae. Throughout human history, owls have variously symbolized dread, knowledge, wisdom, death, and religious beliefs in a spirit world. In most Western cultures, views of owls have changed drastically over time. Owls can serve simultaneously as indicators of scarce native habitats and of local cultural and religious beliefs. Understanding historical and current ways in which owls are viewed, and not imposing Western views on other cultures, is an important and necessary context for crafting owl conservation approaches palatable to local peoples. The Book Owl: The Mysterious Bird is a systematic compilation of authentic and standard literature published by renowned ornithologists, professionals, amateurs and hobbyists of the world in the field of ornithology and wildlife biology. It also covers author’s (HBS) personal observations and published research work in the wild terrains of Gujarat (India) during his research exposure of 24 years as an Ornithologist and Wildlife Biologist. The present book highlights the remarkable key-points and noteworthy information about owls in terms of introductory notes on anatomy, sexual dimorphism, adaptations for hunting, flight and feathers, vision, hearing, talons, beak, camouflage behavior, breeding and reproduction, evolution and systematics, food and hunting, pellets, eyes, plumage, feet, breeding, calls, holistic information about owls (e.g. food and hunting, pellets, eyes, plumage, feet, breeding, calls), symbolisms about owls (African cultures, ancient European and modern Western culture, Asia, Hinduism, native American cultures), motifs and mythology, markers of gods, knowledge, wisdom, and fertility, owls in lore and culture, owls in tribal folklores, owls in mythology and culture, owls in Greek and roman mythology, owls in English folklore, owls in American Indian culture, owl mythology: a global perspective, human impacts on owls, individual impacts, toxicological impacts on owls, agricultural impacts on owls, impacts of habitat alteration on owls, legal protection to owls, owls as environmental indicators, towards a tolerant conservation, rodent control, attacks on humans, and conservation issues. The author has also acknowledged all the researchers, scientists, authors, website developers, NGOS, URLs, and direct or indirect informers in the form of ‘Citations’ in the section ‘Selected Bibliography’. This book will definitely be a ready reference material and handy study guide for students, researchers, scientists, folklore specialists, and bird conservationists around the world. The author renders his immense gratitude and enormous thankfulness to all the informants, who have helped him directly or indirectly during the compilation of this work.

Book excerpt: A young man heard a voice inside his head, "Get outta the car. Get outta the car." He jumped out and, seconds later, the car was destroyed. This story of a supernatural warning is one of many mystical encounters Dr. Farrell heard in twenty-three years working as a prison psychologist. Men in solitary confinement have nowhere to go, so some go out of body. Prisons are ghost-laden, and some murderers are confronted by the ghost of their victim asking, "Why?" Other men are comforted by visitations. Some men learn to put themselves into a trance where they contact dead relatives for advice or to relieve loneliness. Many drug dealers tell of dead former comrades telling them, "Get off the street. Get out of the drug game." Dr. Farrell heard similar stories from his middle-class patients representing a variety of professions including teachers, nurses, construction workers, firefighters, veterans and others who had mystical experiences. People who have these encounters are transformed. After most mystical experiences people become more centered and less distracted by superficial excitements such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, or uncommitted sex. For this reason the final section of the book presents a variety of paths, including meditation, which induce spiritual experiences.

Book excerpt: The story of The Magical Owls is about ten little mice who were in search of these Magical Owls to ask them for help to cool off their dry dessert land. These Magical Owls had the power to bring water, or ice with them. In the process of asking for help the Magical Owls both decided to eat them instead. Then a long and hard chase started. The ten mice separated, five went East in search of the Ice Owl, and the remaining five traveled West for the Snow Owl. The chase continued for days with both owls chasing the mice, they hid under rocks, logs, anything possible to escape the great owls powerful claws. The two groups headed towards each other to escape the owls. Until finally the two owls coming in from an attack speed from both directions crashed into each other causing a big thunderstorm with hail, lightning, and cool wind. This crash saved the land, but it also injured one owl. Days later the mountain lion and a wolf tracked down the owl and they brought the owl back with them without eating him, and the little mice who feared the attacking owls decided to help and repair the wing. After the mice repaired the owl the owl promised to fly by once a year to give water, and snow to cool off the dry hot lands.
