Book excerpt: A shabby young reporter, Henry Beechtree, arrives in Geneva in 1922 to cover the 4th Assembly of the League of Nations. When the League's newly- elected President disappears, followed by another delegate, and another, Henry chases a trail of clues through the assembly halls, chateaux, and lakeside villas of old Geneva, eventually uncovering much more than he intended. Awash in post-war optimism and the petty squabbles of diplomats, Mystery at Geneva is great fun for historical mystery lovers everywhere. This book has been redesigned and re-typeset, while still retaining the feel of the original 1922 publication.

Book excerpt: Dame Emilie Rose Macaulay, DBE (1 August 1881 - 30 October 1958) was an English writer, most noted for her award-winning novel The Towers of Trebizond, about a small Anglo-Catholic group crossing Turkey by camel. The story is seen as a spiritual autobiography, reflecting her own changing and conflicting beliefs. Macaulay's novels were partly influenced by Virginia Woolf; she also wrote biographies and travelogues. Macaulay began writing her first novel, Abbots Verney (published 1906), after leaving Somerville and while living with her parents at Ty Isaf, near Aberystwyth, in Wales. Later novels include The Lee Shore (1912), Potterism (1920), Dangerous Ages (1921), Told by an Idiot (1923), And No Man's Wit (1940), The World My Wilderness (1950), and The Towers of Trebizond (1956).

Book excerpt: Looking far into the future, we are given a picture of some assembly, a kind of League of Nations; a meeting controlled almost entirely by intrigue and plotting. Henry Beechtree, a reporter for a liberal newspaper, becomes interested in the mysterious disappearance of some of the most prominent diplomats. His solution of the matter proves to be quite false, but it serves to throw the reader off the correct thread. The real secret is a surprise for those who think that they have solved the mystery early in the story. Further, the author has suggested a problem that is very much in the minds of people at the present time--for the average person is wondering how these leagues can be kept any more free from secret diplomacy than the old parleys.

Book excerpt: An analysis of the work of Emilie Rose Macaulay (1881-1958), who strove in virtually all of her twenty-three novels to articulate the needs of women for autonomy and achievement. This biocritical study, designated by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Book, finds that Macaulay's writings constitute a deliberate act of rebellion against the cultural myths that trap both men and women in gender stereotypes.

Book excerpt: The League of Nations - Perspectives from the Present is an accessible and richly illustrated edited volume displaying a wide variety of cutting-edge research on the many ways the League of Nations shaped its times and continues to shape our contemporary world. A series of bite-size studies, divided into three thematic parts, investigates how the League affected the world around it and the lives of the people who became part of this 'first great experiment' in international organisation. Recent research has reinterpreted the League as a laboratory of global economic, political and humanitarian governance. Expanding on this, the volume aims to show that the League is an 'academic site', where international history - as a discipline - has re-invented itself by integrating new approaches from social, cultural and media history. With an introduction by Director-General Michael Moller of the United Nations Organisation in Geneva, this work is a timely reminder of the fragile, varied and enduring history of multilateralism, on the centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
