Book excerpt: Mysteries of the Home gathers into a single volume a selection of poems from Paula Meehan's two seminal mid-career collections, The Man who was Marked by Winter (1991) and Pillow Talk (1994), both of which won considerable praise from critics and readers alike. Included here are some of her best-known and best-loved poems - 'The Pattern', 'The Statue of the Virgin at Granard Speaks', 'My Father Perceived as a Vision of St Francis' and 'The Wounded Child' among them. They show an artist at the height of her powers producing work of "remarkable candour and ... stunning lyricism" (The Colby Quarterly). Paula Meehan was born in 1955 in Dublin where she still lives. Besides six collections of poems, the most recent of which are Dharmakaya (2000) and Painting Rain (2009), she has also written plays for both adults and children and conducted residencies in universities, in prisons and in the wider community. Paula Meehan is a member of Aosdana and the recipient of a number of awards, including the Marten Toonder Award for Literature in 1995 and the Denis Devlin Memorial Award in 2001."

Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize Finalist Winner of the Los Angeles Time Book Prize Alice Notley vividly reconstructs the mysteries, longings, and emotions of her past in this brilliant collection of poems that charts her growth from young girl to young woman to accomplished artist. In this volume, memories of her childhood in the California desert spring to life through evocative renderings of the American landscape, circa 1950. Likewise, her coming of age as a poet in the turbulent sixties is evoked through the era's angry, creative energy. As she looks backward with the perspective that time and age allows, Notley ably captures the immediacy of youth's passion while offering her own dry-eyed interpretations of the events of a life lived close to the bone. Like the colorful collages she assembles from paper and other found materials, Notley erects structures of image and feeling to house the memories that swirl around her in the present. In their feverish, intelligent renderings of moments both precise and ephemeral, Notley's poems manage to mirror and transcend the times they evoke. Her profound tributes to the stages of her life and to the identities she has assumed—child, youth, lover, poet, wife, mother, friend, and widow—are remarkable for their insight and wisdom, and for the courage of their unblinking gaze.

Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s southern fiction has been increasingly attentive to social issues, including the continuing struggles for racial justice and gender equality, the loss of a sense of social community, and the decline of a coherent regional identity. The essays in The World Is Our Home focus on writers who have explicitly addressed social and cultural issues in their fiction and drama, including Dorothy Allison, Horton Foote, Ernest J. Gaines, Jill McCorkle, Walker Percy, Lee Smith, William Styron, Alice Walker, and many others. The contributors provide valuable insights into the transformation of southern culture over the past thirty years and probe the social and cultural divisions that persist. The collection makes an important case for the centrality of social critique in contemporary southern fiction.

I was in my early twenties, a widow with a son. At least I thought I was a widow. It seemed that I was all alone in the world after my husbands death was announced. I was eighteen then and about to have a baby. I had my son three months after the wreck that took my husband away. Later on he came back; it was about three years after the wreck occurred. I was at the wedding of a friend. Several months after my friends marriage, I discovered that it had happened againI was going to have a baby. I had a girlCynthia Darlene. Both my children have grown up. Jeff is a surgeon like his late father. Cindy was murdered one evening at her home; she left in the world a baby and her husband. I shall tell you a small portion about my daughters death. It was a dark, stormy night; she was sitting on the lounge in the sitting room. She heard a noise and went into the kitchen to investigate, where she was murdered in cold blood. When she saw the thief, she screamed and the baby started crying. A neighbor heard the baby and came over to the house to find the back door open and Cindy lying on the floor dead. She called Cindys husband and he came home from work. I will tell you more about her death later on in the future. Right now I shall indulge to tell you about the pastmy past as I solved this and many other mysteries in my hometown.
