Book excerpt: "At a time when each Society had its own medium of propogation of its researches ... in the form of Transactions, Proceedings, Journals, etc., a need was strongly felt for bringing out a journal devoted exclusively to the study and advancement of Indian culture in all its aspects. [This] encouraged Jas Burgess to launch the 'Indian antiquary' in 1872. The scope ... was in his own words 'as wide as possible' incorporating manners and customs, arts, mythology, feasts, festivals and rites, antiquities and the history of India ... Another laudable aim was to present the readers abstracts of the most recent researches of scholars in India and the West ... 'Indian antiquary' also dealt with local legends, folklore, proverbs, etc. In short 'Indian antiquary' was ...entirely devoted to the study of MAN - the Indian - in all spheres ... " -- introduction to facsimile volumes, published 1985.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general survey of all the inscriptional material in the Sanskrit, Prakrit, and modern Indo-Aryan languages, including donative, dedicatory, panegyric, ritual, and literary texts carved on stone, metal, and other materials. This material comprises many thousands of documents dating from a range of more than two millennia, found in India and the neighboring nations of South Asia, as well as in many parts of Southeast, central, and East Asia. The inscriptions are written, for the most part, in the Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts and their many varieties and derivatives. Inscriptional materials are of particular importance for the study of the Indian world, constituting the most detailed and accurate historical and chronological data for nearly all aspects of traditional Indian culture in ancient and medieval times. Richard Salomon surveys the entire corpus of Indo-Aryan inscriptions in terms of their contents, languages, scripts, and historical and cultural significance. He presents this material in such a way as to make it useful not only to Indologists but also non-specialists, including persons working in other aspects of Indian or South Asian studies, as well as scholars of epigraphy and ancient history and culture in other regions of the world.

Book excerpt: Material Devotion in a South Indian Poetic World contributes new methods for the study and interpretation of material religion found within literary landscapes. The poets of Hindu devotion are known for their intimate celebration of deities, and while verses over a thousand years old are still treasured, translated, and performed, little attention has been paid to the evocative sensorial worlds referenced by these literary compositions. This book offers a material interpretation of an understudied poem that defined an entire genre of South Asian literature -Tirukkovaiyar-the 9th-century Tamil poem dedicated to Shiva. The poetry of Tamil South India invites travel across real and imagined geography, naming royal patrons, ancient temple towns, and natural landscapes. Leah Elizabeth Comeau locates the materiality of devotion to Shiva in a world unique to the South Indian vernacular and yet captivating to audiences across time, place, and tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Educational system is the most ancient Educational systems in the world. Vedic,Postvedic and Buddhist periods had sound Educational policies , methods of learning , teaching ,evaluation and accreditation, syllabi and curricula, to suit every wake of life. Sanskrit enjoyed the status of common Educational language to unify the nation from Himalaya to Kanyakumari . But regional languages were not neglected. They flourished and translations of Sanskrit works into regional languages was done. Kerala, and the west coast of India in general , had the most ancient University of Valabhi which gave the title "e;Vallabha"e; , Sreevallabha, Sakalakalaavallabha etc to its scholars. The Valabhi University was existent from Prevedic and Vedic times and during the Budhist period , two scholars (Nandins) from Valabhi University established Nalanda University and from that time onwards the Vallabha kings became chancellors and vice chancellors of both these Universities. The Vallabhas declined when Vice chancellorship of Nalanda went to Bengal kings and subsequently when Cholas destroyed the Sreevallabha power of Kerala, Karnataka and Srilanka ( as described in the Manimangalam sasana of the Chola kings). The story of the educational system of India under Valabhi University in Vedic and Budhist period , its peculiarities, merits and demerits, the long family tree of the chancellors of Valabhi right from time of Parasurama upto the present Marthandavarma Uthradam Thirunal of Venad (Thiruvithamkoor Raajavansa) are explored in this work. It also throws light into the practices of the ancient Indians which might be analysed and made use of for National Integration and Global citizenship for world peace and a better Eduational system based on Values and cultural Integration.

Book excerpt: This is a heritage book which takes readers on a spiritual voyage of legends, mythology, saints, temples and dynasties. It presents vignettes of India’s rich cultural background. As one of the seven mokshapuris (centers of salvation) and the nerve-centre of vedic schools, Kanchipuram has always been a role model. Adi Sankaracharya, brought religious renaissance in the country by providing a new meaning to sanatana dharma. He established the KanchiKamakotipeetham which continues to be a center of learning and devotion. The town is credited with having around one thousand temples at one time. While Pallava rulers built most of these temples, these were extensively renovated later by Cholan and Vijayanagara kings. Exhaustive Annexures about the various rules and dynasties are also provided. The book is amply illustrated with maps and photographs, which will be of great interest to general readers and to tourists and pilgrims in particular.
