Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) of Poland is a monographic study of 98 ant species from 25 genera and four subfamilies whose occurrence in Poland has been reliably reported. The book comprises three sections. The first is a catalogue of the Polish ants which provides a systematic review of the species together with information about their geographical ranges, occurrence in Poland and biology. When necessary, a taxonomic history of the species is included. This section cites all faunistic literature data from the first publication in 1780 up to the year 2000. These are supplemented by data obtained by examining museum ant collections. Maps show the Palaearctic ranges of the species together with their distribution in geographical regions of Poland. The second section characterises the myrmecofauna of Poland, including its species, zoogeographical and ecological compositions. The thirds section consists of keys for identification of the Polish ant taxa (subfamilies, genera and species). This is the first complete set of keys to the ants of Poland."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Download or read book Insect Evolutionary Ecology written by Royal Entomological Society of London. Symposium and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects provide excellent model systems for understanding evolutionary ecology. They are abundant, small, and relatively easy to rear, and these traits facilitate both field and laboratory experiments. This book has been developed from the Royal Entomological Society's 22nd international symposium, held in Reading in 2003. Topics include speciation and adaptation; life history, phenotype plasticity and genetics; sexual selection and reproductive biology; insect-plant interactions; insect-natural enemy interactions; and social insects.

Download or read book The Ants of Northern Australia written by Alan N Andersen and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ants are one of the most important faunal groups in Australia and are widely used as bioindicators in land monitoring and assessment programs. The Ants of Northern Australia will help in the identification of the 1500 or more ant species occurring in monsoonal Australia, an area which encompasses most of the northern third of the continent. Until now, no book has described the northern Australian ant fauna below genus level. Such a treatment is required to support and promote the numerous ecological studies involving ants, especially in the context of their use as bioindicators. The Ants of Northern Australia features original analyses of genera at the species-group level, and so has relevance throughout Australia. It treats all major species that have been described, as well as numerous others that remain undescribed.

Download or read book Sociobiology of Communication written by Patrizia d'Ettorre and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication is essential for all forms of social interaction from parental care, to mate choice to cooperation. This book is a timely and novel synthesis. It bridges many of the gaps between proximate and ultimate levels of analysis, between empirical model systems, and between biology and the humanities. The book offers the complementary approaches of a distinguished group of authors spanning a large diversity of research programs, addressing, for example, thegenetic basis of bacterial communication, dishonest communication in insect societies, sexual selection and network communication among colonial vertebrates. Other chapters explore the role ofcommunication in genomic conflict and self-organisation, and how linguistics, psychology and philosophy may ultimately contribute to a biological understanding of human mate choice and the evolution of human societies.
