Everyone in town knows that Beulah will marry Al Moore someday. Everyone. But if that's true, why does Beulah seem to work so hard at attracting Myles's attention? Why does she light up whenever he is near? No matter what common sense might tell him, Myles cannot give up hope that someday Beulah Fairfield will be his. Beulah can't help admiring this mysterious hired man. What secrets does Myles hide? No one knows his past. He could be from anywhere--a bank robber or desperado. And why is Myles so bitter toward God? Surely Beulah cannot love a man who doesn't serve her Lord... yet a woman's heart seldom listens to reason. Is Beulah putting herself at risk? What happens when Myles's shadowy past draws him away from the woman he loves?

Book excerpt: Following Dolphins Under My Bed and Turtles in Our Wake comes the third leg of the Claytons' voyage, two early retirees who decided to live life sailing from place to place to fulfil their dream. Told uniquely from the wife's perspective, Sandra Clayton was initially a reluctant sailor, but became a keen yachtswoman by the end of the first book when the couple sailed from the UK to the Mediterranean. In this installment she describes their transatlantic crossing, from Gibraltar via the Atlantic Islands to the Caribbean, and ending up in Fort Lauderdale. Sandra's previous two books have attracted a loyal and growing readership both in the UK and the US, no doubt due to her engaging writing style. A Thousand Miles from Anywhere is a similarly entertaining travelogue about the Claytons' experiences, detailing the wonderful places they visited, the fascinating people they met and the humorous situations they got involved in. Acclaim for Sandra's writing: 'With her eye for detail and vivid descriptions, Sandra carries the reader with her' - Yachting Life

Book excerpt: If we want to really understand our students so that we can optimize instruction for them, we must think of each individual student as distinctive and irreplaceable. From this core principle springs the radically humane framework for meaningful teaching that is the subject of this book: Powerful Student Care (PSC). Authors Grant A. Chandler and Kathleen M. Budge developed this one-of-a-kind system for catering to the unique life circumstances of every child to help all teachers grow in their practice—and all students to flourish. Based on voluminous research as well as the authors' own experience as seasoned educators, PSC offers teachers a foolproof way to ensure that, regardless of label or socioeconomic profile, each one of their students receives the support they need. Constructed as an allegorical learning voyage for readers, this comprehensive guide details * The foundational five tenets of community that enable students to succeed academically, develop self-efficacy, and experience the joy of learning. * "Navigational instruments," such as processes, instructional methods, and power-sharing relationships, for creating community. * The bodies of knowledge that directly influence teacher and student success, including those related to empowerment, cultural humility, antiracist and antibias learning, and more. * The Contemplative Practice, an inquiry-based, research-informed scaffold for teacher planning and reflection. Brimming with colorful, in-depth cases of Powerful Student Care in action and including downloadable forms and templates to help you move forward with implementation, this book is an essential addition to the library of any K–12 educator with a passion for knowing and supporting the young human beings in their charge.

Not knowing what has become of his family since he was forced into the Continental Army nine years earlier, Myles Cunningham wants to go home as well. He returns to the Mohawk Valley with the understanding that he is believed to have been shot for deserting—fiction that might be made real if anyone recognizes him as the son of a Tory and a King's Ranger. Everything is wonderful in the growing community along the Mohawk River, except Nora Reid is still alone. With her brother happily settled and both her younger sisters starting families of their own, Nora feels the weight of her twenty-four years. A long walk leads her to the overgrown rubble of the Cunningham homestead where a bearded stranger begins to awaken feelings she'd lost hope of ever experiencing. With secrets abounding—including whether Myles even cares for her—Nora must determine what she is ready to give up and how far she will go to secure his affections. She begins to break through his defenses, but Myles can't risk staying. Not if he loves her.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 18, 1928, Myles Yutaka Fukunaga kidnapped and brutally murdered ten-year-old George Gill Jamieson in Waikîkî. Fukunaga, a nineteen-year-old nisei, or second-generation Japanese American, confessed to the crime. Within three weeks, authorities had convicted him and sentenced him to hang, despite questions about Fukunaga's sanity and a deeply flawed defense by his court-appointed attorneys. Jonathan Y. Okamura argues that officials "raced" Fukunaga to death—first viewing the accused only as Japanese despite the law supposedly being colorblind, and then hurrying to satisfy the Haole (white) community's demand for revenge. Okamura sets the case against an analysis of the racial hierarchy that undergirded Hawai‘ian society, which was dominated by Haoles who saw themselves most threatened by the islands' sizable Japanese American community. The Fukunaga case and others like it in the 1920s reinforced Haole supremacy and maintained the racial boundary that separated Haoles from non-Haoles, particularly through racial injustice. As Okamura challenges the representation of Hawai i as a racial paradise, he reveals the ways Haoles usurped the criminal justice system and reevaluates the tense history of anti-Japanese racism in Hawai i.

Book excerpt: Continuing the enchanting chronicles of the fabulous Nuala Anne McGrail and her spear-carrying husband Dermot, bestselling author Andrew M. Greeley takes them once again to Ireland for another thrill-packed adventure. Back on the Emerald Isle, Nuala and Dermot soon get the feeling that someone is out to get them. They find themselves dodging multiple explosions, and someone starts shooting at Nuala while she is water-skiing in the cold Atlantic. Meanwhile, the handsome parish priest, Father Jack, has given Dermot the diary of a young Chicago newspaperman. Written in the year 1882, the diary tells in horrendous detail an intriguing story of a mass murder and a trumped-up trial in which one of Ireland's greatest heroes was accused of the murders without a shred of evidence. These two stories, ancient and modern, soon get mixed up, and they make for an utterly fascinating tale of murder, betrayal, and redemption with Nuala and her magical powers at the center of it all. Andrew Greeley not only tells us a riveting tale of adventure and derring-do, he gives us a picture of modern-day prosperous Ireland and the engaging and, of course, sometimes villainous people who live there. Book excerpt: About the Book Henry Wolcott asked a lot of questions, even if he was the only one around to hear them. This inquisitive nature served him well during his distinguished service during the Civil War, and his heroic efforts earned Henry a large plot of land in the burgeoning rangeland of Western Wyoming. The end of the war was the beginning of the great migration of Americans from east to west, driven by the strength of character and sense of adventures of the individuals who risked all for this pioneering life...a strenuous life. Warm Western Light is a story of one such brave and strong American who joined hundreds of thousands of brave men, women, and children. Despite the incredible hardships endured in this migration, their sacrifice created a legacy that would prove to be the backbone of our United States of America. This brilliantly conceived novel may only be the account of one such man, however few men have ever faced a decision as consequential as the decision that faced Henry...giving away one of his infant twin boys. The necessity of this decision was the ultimate act of love as the boys would be separated by thousands of miles, each knowing nothing about the existence of the other...until one fateful day when their worlds collide. Please join Henry in the celebration of the human condition that seeks freedom, adventure, love, tragedy, sacrifice, and the ultimate redemption. About the Author This is the inaugural novel by RJ Miller, a fifth generation Wyomingite. RJ is a life-long entrepreneur and a flat out lucky man who spends his time appreciating his beautiful family and experiencing the magic that comes with living each and every day.
