Book excerpt: The Rohingya are a Muslim group who live in Rakhine state (formerly Arakan state) in western Myanmar (Burma), a majority Buddhist country. According to the United Nations, they are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. They suffer routine discrimination at the hands of neighboring Buddhist Rakhine groups, but international human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) have also accused Myanmar's authorities of being complicit in a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslims. The Rohingya face regular violence, arbitrary arrest and detention, extortion, and other abuses, a situation that has been particularly acute since 2012 in the wake of a serious wave of sectarian violence. Islam is practiced by around 4% of the population of Myanmar, and most Muslims also identify as Rohingya. Yet the authorities refuse to recognize this group as one of the 135 ethnic groups or 'national races' making up Myanmar's population. On this basis, Rohingya individuals are denied citizenship rights in the country of their birth, and face severe limitations on many aspects of an ordinary life, such as marriage or movement around the country. This expose of the attempt to erase the Rohingyas from the face of Myanmar is sure to gain widespread attention.

Even before he knew the word nationality, his birth certificate was confiscated during a paramilitary operation called the Nasaka against his Rohingya people. As he grew older, he encountered a world where every human right was denied to them. He learnt how they were marginalized and discriminated against religiously, socially, politically only for being who they are. In 2010, he was rejected to be a school teacher in Myanmar while his Buddhist friends pursued all dreams. During the anti-Muslims riots in Rakhine State in June, 2012, Mayyu was stopped attending Sittwe University to pursue his degree. In the violence on 25 August, he fled neighboring Bangladesh. He is now one of those hundreds of thousands of Rohingya survivors who were haunted by stories of gang rape, mass killings and arson attacks that prompted the world's fastest exodus since the 1994's Rwanda genocide.In his young age, he faced many of the ways a human can suffer on this planet. His boyhood was ruined up in bitterness. His dreams were crushed and hope was shattered. His poetry book 'EXODUS' depicts pains, sorrows and vicissitudes of Rohingya lives behind genocide against his people in Myanmar. His poems reflect hues and loses of people during the deadly journey through the ranges of Mayyu mountain, barbaric ironed-fences at border and the weeping Naf river. Besides, his poetry is replete with suffering and despair of Rohingya people in displacement, exile and refugee camps across the world.

The book highlights the helplessness of the UN system to take any punitive actions against the perpetrators i.e. the security forces of Myanmar given that China, India and Russia, who are taking the side of Myanmar for geopolitical reasons. They have exercised their vetoes at the UNSC to such an action. The book describes the key players in this region, their interests, compulsions and imperatives, and covers different strategies launched by the United States, China, India, Japan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar that tend to stall the resolution of the process or even refusing to take back the Rohingya refugees---1.1 million of them including children and women--now languishing in the cramped camps inside Bangladesh. Most of these refugees were forced to flee their ancestral homes after a ghastly genocide meted out to them in October 2017. Such massacres have been taking place in a series of violence starting from 1977-8. This issue has huge regional security implications. The ugly heads of insurgency are also looming large. This has turned out to be a huge burden on the economy and environment of Bangladesh. However, different donor agencies including UNHCR are providing relief and rehabilitation.
