Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To summarise, I would just like to say that I hope you have enjoyed my story. I hope too that some of the events I have had to deal with will be of help to you. You might feel alone at times, but after you read this book, I hope you feel comfort in knowing that whatever you are experiencing as a diabetic is being experienced by others as well. A very big thank you to my husband, Charl, who has stood by me from the very beginning up until now. He has literally been my lifesaver on more than one occasion. I would also like to thank my two beautiful children, Charl Jnr and Carrin, for walking this very long path with me. As children, this could have been quite a traumatic event for them to have to witness, but with us educating them, they were able to deal with it and have been there to help me on so many occasions, some of which were life-threatening. My family have been and still are my rock, with all the love, care, concern, and support that they continuously show me every single day. I could never have survived for so long without them. A huge thank you too to the specialists, doctors, nurses, and diabetic educators and pathologists who have been involved with me along the way. As the patient, I felt irritable whilst lying in the various hospital beds, but I am very grateful for all the work and effort the medical staff put into taking care of me throughout the years. Diabetes will always be a part of my everyday living. I will never be free from it, but I am so fortunate to have come this far and have learnt so much about the disease. To my friends, I thank you for all your support, love, and care. To my readers, I thank you for your interest in my story, and I hope I have given you something to relate to along the way. Look after yourselves. It’s the only body you will ever have. Thank you.

Download or read book No Days Off written by Max Domi and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the NHL’s most talented young stars shares his inspiring coming-of-age story about following his dreams after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. A portion of proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to JDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research. “Max, you have type 1 diabetes,” the doctor said. My mom and I looked at each other. For her, time stood still for a second as our entire future as a family shifted. But I had no clue what the diagnosis meant. So I said the first thing that came to mind. “Can I still play hockey?” As a kid, when Max Domi was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he only ever had one answer: a hockey player. Growing up the son of a professional hockey player—Tie Domi—Max saw from an early age what it took to make the NHL: grit, talent, and the support of a team. Over countless hours in the garage, at the rink, and in the gym, Max chased his dream. It seemed that Max was born to be on the ice. But then, when he was twelve years old, Max started getting sick. And sicker. Eventually, he and his family learned the truth: Max had type 1 diabetes. Overnight, Max and his family found their lives upended. All Max wanted was to be a normal kid, but suddenly, the simplest things—a game of basketball with friends, a family meal, a school field trip—were complicated with a thousand different considerations. Would people notice or make fun of him if he carried his blood-testing kit everywhere? Would his teammates think he was weak if his blood sugar went low at hockey practice? How much insulin did he need after a meal? And all the while, the fear of what might happen if things went wrong hung over his head. Max had to grow up quickly. As he struggled to find his new normal, Max slowly began to realize that overcoming his disease demanded the same qualities that it took to be a hockey player—mental and physical toughness, maturity, and the love and care of family and friends. Bit by bit, he learned—sometimes the hard way—not just to control his diabetes, but to turn it into an advantage. If managing his disease was going to demand that Max be stronger, more prepared, and more disciplined than anyone else, then he wouldn’t just be good at those things: he’d be the best. He’d do whatever it took to move him closer to his dream of playing in the NHL. Inspiring, heartwarming, and exciting, No Days Off is a memoir about what it’s like to be a kid whose world is turned upside down, and what it takes to face adversity.

Book Synopsis This Is Not My Beautiful Life by : Victoria Fedden
Download or read book This Is Not My Beautiful Life written by Victoria Fedden and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF PUBLISHERS WEEKLY'S TEN MOST ANTICIPATED MEMOIRS OF THE SEASON IF YOU THINK IT SUCKS TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS WHEN YOU’RE THIRTY-SIX AND NINE MONTHS PREGNANT, JUST WAIT TILL THE DEA COMES KNOCKING (WITH THE IRS IN TOW): WELCOME TO VICTORIA FEDDEN’S LIFE. When a squad of federal agents burst through her parents’ front door, Victoria Fedden felt ill-prepared to meet them: She was weeks away from her due date and her T-shirt wasn’t long enough to hide her maternity undies. As for the question of how to raise a child when you’ve just discovered that your mother and stepfather have allegedly masterminded a pump-and-dump scheme? She was pretty sure that wasn’t covered in What to Expect When You’re Expecting—and she really hoped that Bradford Cohen, the noted criminal defense attorney who famously waived his exemption on The Apprentice, would prove them innocent. This Is Not My Beautiful Life is the story of how Victoria lost her parents to prison and nearly lost her mind. No one ever said motherhood would be easy, but as she struggles to change diapers, install car seats, and find the right drop-off line at pre-school—no easy task, when each one is named for a stage in the lifecycle of a f*cking butterfly—she’s also forced to ask herself whether a jump-suit might actually complement her mom’s platinum-blonde extensions and fend off the cast of shady, stranger-than-fiction characters (like the recovering addict who scored a reality show when he started an escort service for women) who populated her parents’ world. A real-life Arrested Development that could only unfold in southern Florida, This Is Not My Beautiful Life is a hilariously funny and unexpectedly moving memoir of a just-functional family you’ll never forget.
Book Synopsis Diabetes / My Life by : Martha E. Kern
Download or read book Diabetes / My Life written by Martha E. Kern and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have written Diabetes / My Life with emotions from the deepest recesses of my heart, and have shared my innermost feelings and fears of being an insulin dependent diabetic for over half of my life. I would be foolish to try and tell you that I am not afraid of this disease, because I am. Every little ache, pain, twitch or strange feelings makes me wonder what is happening now?? Where wil this lead me, and what can, and will, I be able to do about it. While there still is no cure for this chronic illness, I sincerely hope that you, or your loved ones, can learn and benefit from my experiences. There is an abundance of material available that has been written by physicians, educators, dieticians, etc...But, there is nothing to compare with the personal side of this chronic illness....as can be written by someone who has walked along the same path that you are headed down... Diabetes / My Life - Patient's Perspective
Book Synopsis A Life of Control by : Alan L. Graber
Download or read book A Life of Control written by Alan L. Graber and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes happens in a life that already has a story. This book, composed of nearly forty personal narratives, based on taped interviews, about the lives of actual patients with diabetes, draws upon the collective experience of an endocrinologist and two nurse practitioners who worked together for twenty-five years. The people who describe their experiences with diabetes range from teenagers to physicians, immigrants, athletes, pregnant women, accountants, a prisoner, and a dairy farmer. They speak of the variety of ways they handle monitoring, diet, insurance coverage, sports, and fashion. Some talk of how they manage to drive trucks for a living or, for recreation, fly airplanes or go spelunking. Many speak frankly of their anxieties and frustrations. The authors acknowledge that both the patient and clinician have a story about their relationship, and describe the richness and tension in their interaction. Families, too, are sources of both support and conflict. These relationships are acknowledged in the organization of the book, which is divided into sections defined by the main elements of diabetes control: patient self-determination, the role of the family, the social situation, and the patient-clinician encounter. The book provides a wealth of information about diabetes, including material on prevention, complications, and new technology, as well as a superb glossary, but it is not intended as a textbook on diabetes or as a self-care manual for patients. Rather the book provides a textured account of the health professional's view of diabetes control and the perspective of the patient whose life is complicated by diabetes.
