Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My First Trip Abroad In Nineteen Hundred and Eight, I went abroad for the first time, accompanied by a portion of my family. During this journey, I took copious notes, secured many photographs and other illustrations of places visited. On my return, I wrote an account of the trip, entitled "My First Trip Abroad." At the time this was written, I had no intention whatever of publishing it, but after looking over the manuscript recently, I decided to have a limited edition printed for distribution among relatives and friends. At the time the manuscript was written, there was no talk of war between the great powers of Europe, and if for no other reason, the impressions gained from military preparations then in evidence, seem now to warrant printed publication of the account of this first trip. The last chapter in this book, "A Day in Washington's Country" is reprinted from "Presidents I Have Seen and Known." The visit to the home of President Washington's ancestors was in the year 1911. The Sulgrave Manor has since been purchased and is now controlled by a Board of Governors, about equally divided between England and the United States. Their names appear at the end of this volume. I intended, before sailing, to go to the country with my family for a few days. Accordingly, we left Broad Street Station on the morning of the sth of July, at nine o'clock, for Stroudsburg. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the ride very much We arrived at Stroudsburg about noon. Mr. Dickerson met us at the station and drove us to the Inn. After having made us comfortable in our rooms, he announced to us that luncheon would be served at There were very few people staying there, so it seemed rather dismal, but as we were hungry we managed to eat as only hungry people can after traveling half a day. There was little or nothing to do there so Mrs. B. And I decided to leave on the following afternoon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. New Hampshire, on the afternoon of January 27th for Boston and, two days later - January 29, 1910 - we sailed from that port on the S. S. Cretic, White Star Line, for Naples. It was our first trip abroad, and we were all filled with excitement over the novel experience. After the excitement of getting on shipboard and being located in our various state-rooms, the next thing that interested us most was getting our mail. I was, indeed, most fortunate; for my steamer letters numbered twenty-one and, by proxy, I had with me every member of my family, as well as letters from many friends and others who had sent us beautiful flowers, books and boxes of candy, to enjoy, if conditions permitted, during our voyage. Our first really thrilling experience occurred just after boarding the steamer. Little William Bradley, in his desire to explore the steamer, had wandered off and completely disappeared from us all, and no one knew where he was. Pandemonium reigned and our consternation was indeed great; for any moment our steamer was ready to sail, and we did not know whether the little fellow was on shipboard or not. I was so afraid he had wandered off the boat in the confusion of so great a crowd. We were all about frantic, and each one started off in a different direction to search for our missing boy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Days Abroad This narrative grew out of a few letters relating the writer's pleasant experiences last August, on a short trip abroad for recreation and rest. Several months are not now required for such a journey. One may see in a week more than was possible in a month's time, half a century ago, and enjoy it fully if the mind is passive, and the purpose not simply to attempt how much may be accomplished in a short space. These sketches the writer hopes may help others whose recreation intervals are short to as thorough enjoyment as he obtained from this trip. New people and customs when mingled with the associations of a vivid past from which all our present life has come, give an agreeable and healthful stimulus to the fancies which carry us out of, and away from the daily routine of habit and cares. I found it, with the fountain pen, in our state-room when I returned from dinner just now, and I start to do as you have asked me to do - to share my trip with you and the girls - and I hope when the book comes back to you we can live over every hour of the trip together. And as for the fountain pen! Words cannot express my joy, because I was so glad to be taken along that I just agreed with everything Walter suggested, and when he said I should have to share his fountain pen, I just rep-lied: Very well, which means that economy in luggage can be carried too far. At least, do you know it as Wagner gives it to the world, in words as lovely as its melodies? The music is worth hearing, and the story well worth a little thought. But per haps you know it already? Because, if you do, of course I shall not tell it, and in that case we need not sail off in strange crafts for the wild Norway coast, but will only steam safely up the Elbe to Hamburg. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schone Aussicht: A Journal of Our Trip Abroad Sooner or later the average mortal must besaw, just as a color-blind man thinks he can pick out red or blue; but the color-blind man, be he ever so teachable, can never know what he misses; and likewise the writer, without a heaven-sent sense or birthright for book-making, never knows how ineffective her narration of sights in book-form really is. It may be equally obvious that the gift has not been cultivated with zeal or properly directed; but whoever reads, I trust, will be born with the precious gift of sympathy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip Abroad: Sketches of Men and Manners, People and Places, in Europe The next thing in order is sea-sickness; for scarcely have we gotten out of sight of land when it becomes my pleasant duty, among many others to feed the fish, or, in other words to pay tribute to Neptune. I need.not remind you that this very quickly becomes monotonous, for it is not long before I am called on for tribute when the treasury is quite empty. But others do so, and I suppose I must, too. We have Splendid weather nearly all the way, it raining only one or two days, and there is but one really foggy day. The moon is approaching the full, and some of the loveliest nights I ever witnessed are given us. It seems a pity to sleep them away. His answer was so good that we thought we would tell the readers about it. It ran as follows: "I wrote out that Dedication the best I could and hope it is the correct thing, but must say I think to print it in type would look much better, for I write like a hen, and do not like the idea of writing in this book.
