Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An archive-based, in-depth analysis of the surreal nature and science movies of the pioneering French filmmaker Jean Painlevé Before Jacques-Yves Cousteau, there was Jean Painlevé, a pioneering French scientific and nature filmmaker with a Surrealist’s eye. Creator of more than two hundred films, his studies of strange animal worlds doubled as critical reimaginations of humanity. With an unerring eye for the uncanny and unexpected, Painlevé and his assistant Geneviève Hamon captured oneiric octopuses, metamorphic crustaceans, erotic seahorses, mythic vampire bats, and insatiable predatory insects. Zoological Surrealism draws from Painlevé’s early oeuvre to rethink the entangled histories of cinema, Surrealism, and scientific research in interwar France. Delving deeply into Painlevé’s archive, James Leo Cahill develops an account of “cinema’s Copernican vocation”—how it was used to forge new scientific discoveries while also displacing and critiquing anthropocentric viewpoints. From Painlevé’s engagements with Sergei Eisenstein, Georges Franju, and competing Surrealists to the historiographical dimensions of Jean Vigo’s concept of social cinema, Zoological Surrealism taps never-before-examined sources to offer a completely original perspective on a cutting-edge filmmaker. The first extensive English-language study of Painlevé’s early films and their contexts, it adds important new insight to our understanding of film while also contributing to contemporary investigations of the increasingly surreal landscapes of climate change and ecological emergency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the shamanic powers within each of us • Explores ayahuasca rituals in the Amazon, messages from power animals and plant spirits, intuitive dreams, soul retrieval, and holograms of past lives and spirits • Explains the shamanic way of “seeing” to diagnose spiritual, emotional, and physical ailments via candle readings, remote viewing, and shamanic journeys • Details how the author has helped individuals communicate with loved ones who have passed on and release themselves from negative spirits Each and every one of us has shamanic powers. Glimpses of them can arise at any age in the form of intuitive dreams, déjà vu, spontaneous visions, and out-of-body experiences. Most people dismiss these experiences. However, by embracing these gifts, we can unlock our shamanic potential to change ourselves and the world around us. Revealing his transformation from skeptic to respected shamanic healer, Itzhak Beery explains how, after countless prescient dreams and visions throughout his life that he brushed off, a series of synchronistic events led to his first shamanism workshop with Michael Harner, renowned shamanism scholar and teacher. This, in turn, led to a trip to South America with John Perkins to work with indigenous shamanic healers. Beery shares his experiences with ayahuasca rituals in the Amazon, messages from power animals and plant spirits, dreams that foretold future events, and holographic sightings of past lives and spiritual entities, both evil and benign. He details his shamanic way of “seeing” to diagnose spiritual, emotional, and physical ailments via candle readings and remote viewing. Explaining how we are always surrounded by spirits, he recounts helping people communicate with loved ones who have passed on and shares powerful stories of soul retrieval during shamanic journeys to other worlds. Through his true stories of visions that manifested in reality, Beery reveals that we are all shamans. By igniting our natural intuition and developing trust for our inner powers, we can each connect to the oneness of nature where all knowledge is found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trust me, there is life and love (and plenty of laughter) after divorce, even when your ex is one of Australia’s highest profile sport stars. Actually, I Don’t Like Cricket Or Blow Jobs! (And to be honest, I suck at both.) Yes, that was what I originally wanted to call this book. But then I realised that some women like cricket. Also, reading this in front of your inquisitive seven-year-old could lead to some awkward conversations. So, in stepped Currently Between Husbands to save the day and any blushes. Having a relationship in the spotlight is hard enough, but in Currently Between Husbands, Cathrine Mahoney details the unique experience of breaking up with one of Australia's highest profile sport stars. Even for a self-confessed over-sharer, the breakdown of her marriage to rugby league player Andrew Johns was more public than she was used to. In her first book, the writer, podcaster and publicist provides a self-deprecating and hilarious look at her life – from fashion mistakes and early crushes as a kid growing up in Wales, to her years working with some of the world's biggest stars at Sony Music, to navigating life and love as a ‘solo’ mum, and coming to terms with hitting the big 4-0. Currently Between Husbands is the equivalent of having a chat with your bestie over a drink or two, with all the inappropriate confessions, front bottom revelations and teary moments that entails. ‘Desperately funny, fearless and full of heart.’ Meg Mason, author of Sorrow and Bliss ‘Strap in. You’re in for a fabulous ride. And you’ll be wishing (like I was before I knew her) that she was your friend. It’s a bloody good book, and I didn’t want it to end.’ Amanda Keller OAM, radio and TV host ‘My all-time favourite movie is Bridget Jones’ Diary – to anoint a real-life version is a big deal – but Cathrine Mahoney is it Bridget to a tee. I’d pay to read a post it note she wrote, let alone a book. Cathrine’s ability to be funny, clever, relatable, self-deprecating and just so loveable is unlike anyone I’ve ever met.’ Erin Molan, TV presenter, radio host and writer

Book excerpt: Serene works in a New York City art gallery. She handpicked this life, yet she cant stomach it. She knows there is something not only wrong with her existence but also with the world in which we live. Social discord and saddening chaos are like two hands tightening around her throat. When her overbearing boss forces her to attend a lavish party in France to land a sale, she winds up in a living nightmare. Serene encounters the Countessa wicked manifestation of dark energy that humankind has been working hard to create, in spite of ourselves. She is our fear, anger, hurt, and self-destruction all in one. Her physical form is a beautiful six-foot-tall cancer wrapped in couture and always hunting you. Serenes story is also one of love. She falls for James, a man birthed from a lineage of opera singers who have all committed suicide. Serene meets a rainbow of energy. The first, being an unearthly, cuttlefish that envelopes her with a symphony of color, light and sound. Immersed in deep turquoise waters and even deeper inside of the cephalopod. She feels it contract and expand with every beat of her heart. She is birthed both physically and spirituallyand so her journey begins. Equal parts HARRY POTTER, and GOSSIP GIRL, SERENE is a never before told story. The first to merge the contrasting worlds of art/pop culture and spirituality in a riveting tale that, above all, is a celebration of human capability, living and loving without boundaries or fear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Animal That Therefore I Am is the long-awaited translation of the complete text of Jacques Derrida's ten-hour address to the 1997 Cérisy conference entitled "The Autobiographical Animal," the third of four such colloquia on his work. The book was assembled posthumously on the basis of two published sections, one written and recorded session, and one informal recorded session. The book is at once an affectionate look back over the multiple roles played by animals in Derrida's work and a profound philosophical investigation and critique of the relegation of animal life that takes place as a result of the distinction--dating from Descartes--between man as thinking animal and every other living species. That starts with the very fact of the line of separation drawn between the human and the millions of other species that are reduced to a single "the animal." Derrida finds that distinction, or versions of it, surfacing in thinkers as far apart as Descartes, Kant, Heidegger, Lacan, and Levinas, and he dedicates extended analyses to the question in the work of each of them. The book's autobiographical theme intersects with its philosophical analysis through the figures of looking and nakedness, staged in terms of Derrida's experience when his cat follows him into the bathroom in the morning. In a classic deconstructive reversal, Derrida asks what this animal sees and thinks when it sees this naked man. Yet the experiences of nakedness and shame also lead all the way back into the mythologies of "man's dominion over the beasts" and trace a history of how man has systematically displaced onto the animal his own failings or bêtises. The Animal That Therefore I Am is at times a militant plea and indictment regarding, especially, the modern industrialized treatment of animals. However, Derrida cannot subscribe to a simplistic version of animal rights that fails to follow through, in all its implications, the questions and definitions of "life" to which he returned in much of his later work.

Book excerpt: Winner of the John Burroughs Medal: An “admission ticket to a secret corner of the world” (Bill McKibben). Naturalist David Carroll has dedicated his life to art and to wetlands. He is as passionate about swamps, bogs, vernal ponds, and the creatures who live in them as most of us are about our families and closest friends. He knows frogs and snakes, muskrats and minks, dragonflies, water lilies, cattails, sedges—everything that swims, flies, trudges, slithers, or sinks its roots in wet places. In this “intimate and wise book,” Carroll takes us on a lively, unforgettable yearlong journey, illustrated with his own elegant drawings, through the wetlands and reveals why they are so important to his life and ours—and to all life on Earth (Sue Hubbell). “Carroll covers four seasons of wading through marshes, swamps, bogs, and fens. [His] eye for detail serves him well, whether he’s spying on a tiny garter snake struggling to suck down a much larger wood frog or watching a raccoon savagely digging a turtle out of its shell.” —Entertainment Weekly “In my pantheon of nature writers, David Carroll walks on water.” —Robert Michael Pyle
