Book excerpt: Experience real Saigon: My Saigon 2024 Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) offers bustling streets, amazing walks, too-hip-for-you cafes, rocking music clubs, luxurious salons, explosively delicious restaurants, and indoor cat zoos. Saigon is Vietnam. It’s young, practical, crowded, and a little bit brash. Most visitors to Saigon see the same boring “attractions”: boring restaurants, tourist-trap markets, and War propaganda. Saigon has so much more to experience than tourists see. My Saigon gives you the insider track: the most amazing experiences, the cultural backstories, the practical go-to tips, the best coffee, the best food (far beyond pho and banh mi), the best hangouts, the coolest stuff, and hipsters, hipsters everywhere. Details about 90-day and multi-entry electronic visas to Vietnam (new as of August, 2023). Big-picture navigation. History your tour guides aren't allowed to mention. Good hotels for cheap, without hostels, bedbugs, and weird smells. Get mobile data up and running without being scammed. The best pho in Saigon: no, it's not the one in the backpacker district. Awesome, authentic, cheap restaurants where my friends and I eat -- and Tripadvisor has no clue about. Coffee. Did someone say coffee? 1930s coffee, street coffee, "specialty" coffee, all kinds of coffee: I'll tell you where. Hang out with Vietnamese people, munch on dried squid, listen to Viet Pop (if you dare). Make cool friends, date guys or girls, whatever flag you might fly. Bust out with Saigonese slang to make your new friends laugh. Watch out for Saigon's mafia: they run the streets, and they don't announce themselves. Don't unintentionally offend people by wearing a popular tourist souvenir t-shirt. You definitely shouldn't give money to beggars and street kids. Avoiding taxi scams in Saigon is so easy, but most tourists refuse to learn. My Saigon is a guide, a love confessional, an instruction manual, and an ode to the city.

Book excerpt: A breathtaking celebration of Instagram's premier solo female travel community, featuring 200 striking photographs—most of them all-new—plus empowering messages and practical tips for solo travelers. “For those with passports full of stories, this book carries you away to every dreamy corner of the earth. I can’t stop flipping through these visually incandescent pages to see where I’m capable of traveling to next!”—Caila Quinn, The Bachelor contestant and lifestyle and travel influencer From backpackers in Peru to artists in Berlin to storytellers in Morocco, Dame Traveler celebrates the diversity and bravery of women from around the world who are not afraid to think (and live) outside the box. The revolutionary Dame Traveler Instagram account was founded by Nastasia Yakoub, who was born into a strict Chaldean-Middle Eastern community where women are expected to marry young and put aside other personal ambitions. But at the age of twenty, Nastasia embarked on a solo trip to South Africa to volunteer at an orphanage in Cape Town, which sparked a love of world travel. Recognizing a void in the travel industry, she founded Dame Traveler, the first female travel community on Instagram, now more than half a million strong. Nastasia herself has traveled to sixty-three countries on solo adventures, sharing colorful photos of her tantalizing travels along the way. Dame Traveler celebrates these women with a photographic collection of 200 stunning images paired with inspiring captions, 80% of which have never been seen on the Instagram account. Organized into sections on architecture, culture, nature, and water, each entry features travel information, plus tips, advice, unique solo-travel experiences, and wisdom from contributing globe-trotters to embolden the next generation of Dame Travelers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanoi: a maze of alleys, lakes, pagodas, jazz clubs, cafes, and Soviet statues. Even for us Vietnamese people, Hanoi is infamously inscrutable. It’s Vietnam’s enigma wrapped in a mystery, with egg cream on top. You can take the easy, well-trodden path: the tourist market, the tourist pho restaurant, the tourist beer street, and a dude in a glass case. Or you can go local: eat the pho that Vietnamese foodies eat, drink the coffee VIetnamese hipsters drink, and hang out on the other beer street, the one that’s not in any guidebooks, the one for locals. I'll even show you a super-creepy abandoned amusement park. Instead of canned propaganda, you'll understand the real stories behind the places and people you’re seeing. You'll meet “the locals.” Yes, they’d love to chat with you, they want to practice their English, and no, they don’t hate Americans. Nobody cares about the war anymore. We’ll wander down sketchy alleys and experience amazing places you’d never find in mass-market, foreigner-produced, ChatGPT-written guidebooks. I’ll also teach you practical skills to break away from the guided tours and well-worn tourist attractions: the lowdown on Vietnam visas (the rules were completely changed in 2023), how to get around, how to buy things, what to say, and what (and whom!) to avoid. My guidebooks took you to Saigon and Da Nang. You had a great time. Now, let’s meet the final boss: Hanoi. You’ll love it, I promise.

Book excerpt: Wide-open beaches, Insta-worthy scenery, five-dollar seafood feasts, and villagers excited to see visitors… You’ve never heard of Quy Nhon, despite its stunning scenery and welcoming atmosphere. Neither have all the tourists. That’s the point. I’ll show you where to go, where to stay, what to experience, and of course, where to eat and drink. The travel bloggers are wrong about Ky Co Beach. I’ll show you how to do Ky Co like an expert. But there's a little-known beach that's a million times better than Ky Co, with soft sand, rolling waves, and a giant Buddha statue. I'll take you there. Quy Nhon’s biggest seafood restaurant, the one with the pretty-girl waitresses, isn’t all that great. I’ll show you much better seafood. We’ll make Vietnamese sashimi hand rolls for lunch. In the fishing villages I show you, people will ask to pose for photos with anyone they don’t recognize. For dinner, you can choose your free-range chicken while it’s still free on the range. Then we'll have coffee in a miniature lighthouse, and explore a creepy abandoned theme park. Let’s discover Quy Nhon!

Book excerpt: The guide for the wise traveler who wants the best! 18,748 Words, 235 Pages, 184 Pictures, 140 Reviews Although I initially arrived as a tourist to Vietnam, I was enchanted by its magic, and decided to quit my job in London and move here, and since I have done nothing but enjoy the gratitude and kindness of its people. When I visited as a tourist I brought three tourist guides, none of which really satisfied me, so I decided to write this one. If you are a similar traveller to me, I am sure you will enjoy the lack of clutter to fill pages, writing about what is important, and lots of tips that usually only locals know about. This book will bring you to most interesting parts of Ho Chi Minh City, as well as to other parts of the country. Do not worry if you think I am not covering everything and you will be short of things to do and see: if you visit everything I review in this book, you will need three to four weeks! I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT!

Book excerpt: Snails fresh off the grill, bowls of fresh dumplings, late-night goat curry, rotten fish soup, and ice cream, ice cream everywhere! Did you think Vietnamese food is just pho? There's some amazing pho here in Saigon, but that's not even the beginning of good eating here! Stay away from the bland, overpriced tourist traps, and follow the trail of in-the-know, food-obsessed Saigonese people for the best Vietnamese meals ever. Come to Saigon and chow down big. This is the newly updated, 2015 edition of Eat Saigon, the insider's guide to eating like a real Saigonese local. This book guides you through twenty Saigonese food categories, and tell you where in-the-know Saigonese people find those foods. Want some grilled pork chops? Or crab and snail soup? Or durian smoothies? Or even Vietnamese microbreweries that have never seen any tourists? It's all in here. You'll be welcomed at each of these places, and even if you don't speak a word of Vietnamese, I guarantee you'll be able to make sense of things. No matter what anyone told you, $10 USD is not a reasonable price for a meal in Saigon! You're being ripped off! And your $10 meal probably has smaller portions and lower quality than my $2 meal. And no matter what any foreign travel writer told you, Ngon is not a good Vietnamese restaurant, and Pho 24 is not a good place for pho! Let me show you some much, much better alternatives. The restaurants I recommend in this book are primarily near the center of the city, easy for you to access, and serve meals costing around 50,000 dong ($2.34 USD). They're the favorites of native Saigonese people like me. You can easily reach them by walking or taking a Vinasun taxi. You'll get by without speaking any Vietnamese -- not just because the language of "hungry" is universal, but also because restaurant staff do speak some basic English, and this book includes Vietnamese phrases you might use in restaurants. The restaurants I recommend have lots of local business already, and don't need to court tourists or guidebook writers. So they don't appear in other guidebooks. In fact, almost all of the restaurants appearing on Tripadvisor or in Lonely Planet are exclusively tourist restaurants, and not only do Vietnamese people not go to them, but Vietnamese people have never even heard of them, unless they work there. So who (or whom) are you going to trust? Millions of Saigonese locals, or some foreign travel writer who just dropped out of the sky? Yes, I thought that would be your answer. Get ready for steaming hot chicken pho. And a dim sum emporium, with Cantonese opera performances every morning, and zero tourists. Oh, oh, and there's always Cambodian pork noodles... ahhhhh! Get over here already. Eat Saigon!

Book excerpt: Ho Chi Minh City, commonly known as Saigon or by the abbreviations HCMC or HCM, is the largest city in Vietnam and the former capital of the Republic of Vietnam. Although the capital of a united Vietnam is Hanoi in the north, Ho Chi Minh City remains Vietnam's main economic and financial centre. While it does not have the long history that cities like Hanoi and Hue have, it is Vietnam's most modern and cosmopolitan city, with influences from the French former colonial rulers and the ethnic Chinese community in Cholon deeply embedded in the local culture, perhaps most visible in its cuisine. Wink Travel Guides introduce you to the best world travel destinations, in a clear and concise way, illustrated by photos.
