She was the daughter of William Reade Sr. and Johanna Jones. James and Nancy had eight sons and two daughters. James died September 10, 1819 in Rutherford, Tennessee. Descendants lived in Virginia, Tennessee, England, France, Germany and elsewhere.

He died in 1794 in Ruckersville, Virginia. He married Mary Burton ca. 1750, the daughter of May Burton and Hanna Medley. Among their descendants is the Reverend Edmund Burton Rucker, grandfather to the author. Ruckers have lived in Virginia, Tennessee and elsewhere in the United States.
