Novak (bestselling author of The Book With No Pictures) described this groundbreaking poetry collection as "Smart and sweet, wild and wicked, brilliantly funny--it's everything a book for kids should be." Lauded by critics as a worthy heir to such greats as Silverstein, Seuss, Nash and Lear, Harris's hilarious debut molds wit and wordplay, nonsense and oxymoron, and visual and verbal sleight-of-hand in masterful ways that make you look at the world in a whole new wonderfully upside-down way. With enthusiastic endorsements from bestselling luminaries such as Lemony Snicket, Judith Viorst, Andrea Beaty, and many others, this entirely unique collection offers a surprise around every corner. Adding to the fun: Lane Smith, bestselling creator of beloved hits like It's a Book and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, has spectacularly illustrated this extraordinary collection with nearly one hundred pieces of appropriately absurd art. It's a mischievous match made in heaven! "Ridiculous, nonsensical, peculiar, outrageous, possibly deranged--and utterly, totally, absolutely delicious. Read it! Immediately!" --Judith Viorst, bestselling author of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Book excerpt: "Think of some famous poems, think of the best poems of all times. How many of them don't rhyme?" D. Rudoy. The rhyming poem is a dying breed: if you don't specify the rhyming part withing a query, the search engine may offer you only free verses. Does it mean that modern poets have abandoned the hard and rewarding quest for the mesmerizing rhythm and perfect rhyme? "Love Is Poetry - Rhyming Poems About Love Life", a brand-new collection of love poetry by Danil Rudoy, suggests that the land of exquisite rhyming still does welcome the daring literary connoisseur. "Love Is Poetry - Rhyming Poems About Love Life". A Tribute to the Best Poems of All Time Classic love poetry takes you on a journey to your best self. For that, three ingredients are required: a poetic talent, a rhyme, and a rhythm. Combined, they form a magic solution that delivers the soul to a beautiful place where wisdom reigns over the hearts and deep awe is the best proof of the validity of your experience. The difference between love and life is illusory: those who loved once know it best. In "Love Is Poetry - Rhyming ..." Rudoy demotes this barrier with vehement determination of someone who's seen the truth and wants to share it with fellow humans. His love pivots around evolution: the lyrical hero is painfully aware of how fragile we are and pushes himself to an extreme searching for happiness that will outlast a transient desire. He boldly wishes for his beloved "to have a lucid dream tonight", or to wake up to the immensity around that likens the human soul to a brave candle flickering in infinity and looking for kindred flames. Magical themes and images are fairly common in "Love Is Poetry - Rhyming ..." as the poet explores the human potential. Consequently, love plays the role of a catalyst that prohibits giving up. And, much like the free verse is an alluring trap for those without a clear vision of their literary path, it is tempting to indulge in weakness and give in to destructive egoism that is especially detrimental in love affairs. To Rudoy, a rhyming poem about love is therefore a quintessence of power, a magic key that opens the hearts of the lover and the beloved, making their passion mutual and everlasting. And the poet's hope is that, by reading "Love Is Poetry - Rhyming ...", people will become not mere observers but active and conscious participants in the building of their own happiness with those men and women who once captivated their souls and opened their eyes to the beautiful shine of eternal love. Danil Rudoy on Rhyming Poetry "The rhymed verse is the only literary form deserving to be called poetry. The rest is, at best, aphoristic prose. And most of the time it's mediocre prose with clumsy line breaks in unexpected places.""One cannot simply blurt out some nonsense and call it poetry. Poetry is never trivial: it is aware of itself, and of the impact it has on life. The rhyme helps to maintain and polish that awareness to sublime states; it is the great filter of thoughts turning raw words and phrases into immortal memory.""They will tell you that rhyme and rhythm were removed from poetry to arrive at new, modern, contemporary forms. It's true, but only in part. The rest is: bad poets realized that, if they didn't have to rhyme, they could sell their writing to the same readers who'd have puked at the authors had the "poems" been rhymed.""The right to write poetry that doesn't rhyme is earned by showing that you can write poetry like the famous classics used to. If you can't, you are but an impostor. And, no matter what you call the pile of your "poetics", it'll remain what it is: crap.""Naturally, among non-rhyming poems there also are true masterpieces of literature; although it's hard to remember the last time a poem like that came around."

From Hello, I Love You to Pleasures of the Flesh to Loves Me Not, this collection of one hundred poems shouts out life’s grand passion with the help of the voices of poets old and new. Rubin’s informed, irreverent style skillfully reveals the humor, beauty, variety, tradition, and passion of love poetry. Insightful commentary on the poems’ meanings and on ways to read them aloud, as well as notes on their history and background, are found on every page. Whether long lived like Shakespeare’s sonnets or newly-hewn like Carolyn Forché’s “Taking Off My Clothes,” Love Poetry Out Loud makes each poem as fresh and inspiring as the first time it was uttered.

Kantor critiques the treatment of queer figures and imagines a braver and bolder future that allows queer voices the agency over their own stories. Drawing upon elements of the Aristotelian dramatic structure and the Hero's Journey, Please Come Off-Book is both a love letter to and a scathing critique of American culture and the lenses we choose to see ourselves through.

Book excerpt: Popular in queer communities, anti-war organizations, college campuses and women/gender studies programs, Andrea Gibson's second book of poems, The Madness Vase's topics range from hate crimes to playgrounds, from international conflict to hometowns, from falling in love to the desperation of loneliness. Gibson's work seizes us by the collar and hauls us inside some of her darkest moments, then releases out the other side. Moments later, we find ourselves inhaling words that fill us with light. Their luminous imagery is a buoy that allows us to resurface from their world, clutching new possibilities of our own, and linger in our psyches and entreat us to action. They challenge us to grow into our own skin. By the time you finish reading The Madness Vase, you too will believe, "Folks like us/We've got shoulder blades that rust in the rain/But they are still G-sharp/Whenever our spinal chords are tuned to the key of redemption/So go ahead world/Pick us/To make things better."

Book excerpt: A New York Times New & Noteworthy Book • "Strange and affectionate, like Almost Famous penned by Shakespeare. A love letter to music in all its myriad iterations."—Kirkus Reviews • "This book has no business being as good as it is."—Christian Wiman In the year 2063, on the edge of the Crater formerly known as Montréal, a middle-aged man and his ex’s daughter search for a cult hero: the leader of a short-lived band named after a forgotten work of poetry and known to fans through a forgotten work of music criticism. In this exuberantly plotted verse novel, Guriel follows an obsessive cult-following through the twenty-first century. Some things change (there’s metamorphic smart print for music mags; the Web is called the “Zuck”). Some things don’t (poetry readings are still, mostly, terrible). But the characters, including a robot butler who stands with Ishiguro’s Stevens as one of the great literary domestics, are unforgettable. Splicing William Gibson with Roberto Bolaño, Pale Fire with Thomas Pynchon, Forgotten Work is a time-tripping work of speculative fiction. It’s a love story about fandom, an ode to music snobs, a satire on the human need to value the possible over the actual—and a verse novel of Nabokovian virtuosity.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Based on his wildly popular New Yorker piece, Thurber Prize-winner John Kenney presents a hilarious collection of love poems for, well, married people. Full of brilliant wit, dynamic energy, and a heavy dose of reality, Love Poems for Married People takes the poetic form, turns it upside down and leaves it in the dishwasher to dry. Inspired by one of the most shared New Yorker pieces of all time, this collection captures the reality of life once the spark of a relationship has settled--and hilariously so. With brand new pieces that cover all areas of married life, from parental gripes to dwindling sex lives, Kenney's wry observations and sharp humor remind us exactly what it's like to spend the rest of your life with the person you love. I was almost feeling fondness for you As you gave me a shoulder massage at the sink-- What a small, lovely surprise. And then you grabbed my boobs and made a "wha-wha" noise. In an instant, I felt disgust and sadness and regret.

Book excerpt: Poetry can be daunting and hard to understand, but it doesn't have to be. I feel a poet has an obligation to write in a way that everyone can understand. Poems should flow softly through a poet's words, their meanings gently caressing the heart and mind of its reader. If a poem comes from the heart, it will reach other hearts, and this is what I've tried to do with the poetry in "Anatomy of a Poet." CJ Heck "Like a rose with many petals and sharing its sweet aroma, this is how I see and feel about the love of my life, CJ Heck. She is my electric blue-eyed girl. She can be both a little girl, or a strong woman, whenever and wherever the situation calls for it. She is both sensuous and exciting, and soft and affectionate. Tragedy struck her life early with the death of her husband in Vietnam. This experience laid open the very core of her heart and soul and opened the channel to a well of compassion and sensitivity that waited deep within. Her pain was the fertilizer that helped her bloom as a writer. CJ's poetry is not a surface observation, but a soulful interpretation of the events and people that inspired her. She writes both eloquently and simply of things that touch her heart, things she wants to share. She is gifted at painting a picture with words on the heart and imagination of others, thereby communicating not just an image, but a life experience. I feel very honored to have been asked to write this introduction and share my feelings about CJ Heck. She is the water for my soil, the sunlight for my petals and the nurturer of my growth. Sit back, open your heart and enjoy the journey as revealed through her words, images and emotions. You are blessed by this opportunity to know her in words, as I know her in life." Robert S. Cosmar, Author "This is my kind of poetry. Direct, beautifully expressed and without a hint of pretension." Allison Cassidy "CJ is predominately viewed as a writer of works for children, but CJ now carries over her approach to more adult themes. In doing so, she presents a profound world that is deeply sad, incredibly humorous and sometimes very intimate." Joseph Daly "I love learning new words, especially when they are explained with such diaphanous clarity. Whether she talks of love, children, life, or any other subject, CJ's words are always clear and harmonious. She makes us forget that easy to read is hard to write." Marc Mimouni (London, United Kingdom) "CJ Heck is a very talented author. Her words are enlightening and charismatic to people of all ages. It is a privilege and honor to read her prolific pen." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True love is real… Once upon a time, two youngsters, Joseph & Lidia, five years apart in age, met on a bus ride to a public speaking contest. They began talking about life, goals, dreams, poetry and more. Over time, their conversations grew into a strong friendship, despite their age difference. Years passed, and one day they were blessed with realization that they had found their soulmates, and they got engaged to be married when Joseph graduated college. At the time of their engagement, they had not yet kissed, or even held hands for the first time. One year later, on the day of his graduation, two best friends and soulmates were married, and they never stopped courting. Over the years, for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and valentine's day, or to celebrate personal moments, Joseph, would write rhymed and metered love poems and life poems to his beautiful bride.
