Book Synopsis The Chrysantheme Papers by : Christopher Reed
Download or read book The Chrysantheme Papers written by Christopher Reed and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2010-08-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Loti’s novel Madame Chrysanthème (1888) enjoyed great popularity during the author’s lifetime, served as a source of Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly, and remains in print to this day as a classic in Western literature. Loti’s story, cast in the form of his fictionalized diary, describes the affair between a French naval officer and Chrysanthème, a temporary "bride" purchased in Nagasaki. More broadly, Loti’s novel helped define the terms in which Occidentals perceived Japan as delicate, feminine, and, to use one of Loti’s favorite words, "preposterous"—in short, ripe for exploitation. The Pink Notebook of Madame Chrysanthème (1893) sought, according to a newspaper reviewer at the time, "to avenge Japan for the adjectives that Pierre Loti has inflicted on it." Written by Félix Régamey, a talented illustrator with firsthand knowledge of Japan, The Pink Notebook retells Loti’s story but this time as the diary of Chrysanthème. The book, presented here in English for the first time and together with the original French text and illustrations by Régamey and others, is certainly surprising in its late nineteenth-century context. Its retelling of a classic tale from the position of a character marginalized by her sex and race provocatively anticipates certain aspects of postmodern literature. Translator Christopher Reed’s rich and satisfying introduction compares Loti and Régamey in relation to attitudes toward Japan held by notable Japonistes Vincent van Gogh, Lafcadio Hearn, Edmond de Goncourt, and Philippe Burty. Reed provides further intellectual context by including new translations of excerpts from Loti’s novel as well as a portion of the travel journal of Régamey’s travel companion, the renowned collector Emile Guimet. Reed’s emphasis on competing Western ideas about Japan challenges conventional scholarly generalizations concerning Japanism in this era. This elegant translation of The Pink Notebook and Japoniste documents will delight both general and specialized readers, particularly those interested in the ambiguities in the dynamics of nationalism, gender, identification, and exploitation that, since the nineteenth century, have characterized the West’s relationship to Japan.

Download or read book Black-box Testing written by Iris Pinson and published by Pinson Publisher. This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An erotic triptych depicting sin, starting with the original sin, ending in hell. Inspired by the Haywain Triptych by the Dutch painter Jheronimus Bosch. How does the paradisiacal innocence relate to guilt? Lila, Péar, and Victoria Van Gelre are three sisters who have it all. They are attractive, highly intelligent, articulate, and have a strong appeal to men of status. However, the ladies are selective and only receptive to men of good lineage, who also have wealth to spare. The three girls don't know any better. From a young age, their mother Margaret, a successful Euro Commissioner, has done everything in her power to provide her daughters with a privileged start in life. In the college life of Wichita, USA, Victoria is adored for her European aristocratic attitude. Working as an appraiser at Kingston Real Estate, Lila follows a career path lined with gold. Their sister Péar is a talented swimmer who pushes herself to the limit to claim the coveted gold medal at the Olympic Games. The Van Gelre family symbolizes the allegorical representation surrounding a haywagon, where everyone eagerly tries to secure their share. Unfortunately, the cart is pulled by demons, gradually leading the unsuspecting, hay-blinded family towards the abyss. The dignitaries are not impartial resources, which leads the sinners, one by one, over a bridge into hell.

Book excerpt: A wickedly funny and satisfyingly highbrow black comedy about the collapse of Western academic institutions under the weight of neoliberal economics and crushing, widespread idiocy. With philosophy professors being moved to badminton departments and gin in short supply—although not short enough—the two hapless intellectuals embark on a relentless mission. Well, several relentless missions. For one, they must help gear a guerilla philosophy movement—conducted outside the academy, perhaps under bridges—that will save the study of philosophy after the long, miserable decades of intellectual desert known as the early 21st-century. For another, they must save themselves, perhaps by learning to play badminton after all. Gin isn’t free, you know.

Book Synopsis Strip Cultures by : The Project on Vegas The Project on Vegas
Download or read book Strip Cultures written by The Project on Vegas The Project on Vegas and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Las Vegas Strip, blockbuster casinos burst out of the desert, billboards promise "hot babes," actual hot babes proffer complimentary drinks, and a million happy slot machines ring day and night. It’s loud and excessive, but, as the Project on Vegas demonstrates, the Strip is not a world apart. Combining written critique with more than one hundred photographs by Karen Klugman, Strip Cultures examines the politics of food and water, art and spectacle, entertainment and branding, body and sensory experience. In confronting the ordinary on America’s most famous four-mile stretch of pavement, the authors reveal how the Strip concentrates and magnifies the basic truths and practices of American culture where consumerism is the stuff of life, digital surveillance annuls the right to privacy, and nature—all but destroyed—is refashioned as an element of decor.
