Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mr. Pishioneri weaves a great story that brings you through the times when love of family and love of country meant the world to the people of America." Hanging beneath a B-24 Liberator in flight, in 40 to 60 degree weather, bringing his own oxygen and heat with him in this hostile environment; a moving target for enemy fighters, gives one a unique perspective from which to ponder who and what it's all about. The author, a veteran of 35 bombing missions over occupied Europe during World War II, recalls his experiences illuminated by the insight of a Bachelor of Science in American History and 37 1/2 years of teaching Social Studies. A veteran storyteller and talented artist, he weaves his story by chronicling the historical events and personal experiences of his service life between the actual letters he wrote home that were preserved for him by his mother. In Me, Mom and World War II, the reader steps back in time to experience life as the middle child of a large Italian-American family growing up in a small steel town in Western Pennsylvania. The loss of their father, and living through The Great Depression followed by "the emergency" brought on by the bombing of Pearl Harbor forged within them a strength and courage that held them together.

Book excerpt: A U.S. Navy submariner’s account of his adventurous life in service beneath the waves. Beginning on a cattle ranch in Colorado, this memoir follows a young sailor on his voyage around the world. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1960 and completing the Nuclear Power School program, Gary Penley embarks on a series of adventures-often at risk of his life-while serving on a submarine as a power plant operator. During his seven years with the navy, Penley and his shipmates encounter several frightening situations. While on submerged patrol in the Mediterranean Sea, his submarine, the USS Hamilton, strikes a heavy object, which tears a large hole in the ballast tank and threatens to sink the submarine. Later, they ride out a ferocious storm in the Arctic Circle that nearly submerges the vessel. Another harrowing experience occurs when the sailors, while on a top-secret mission in the Mediterranean during the Six-Day War, are attacked by unknown enemy ships and barely escape unscathed. Throughout his expeditions, Penley stops in such countries as Spain, Scotland, Italy, and Japan. In this captivating memoir, he recounts the coping skills necessary to live in a confined space for extended patrols while facing constant danger—often resulting in hilarious scenarios that only wild submarine sailors could conjure. He also provides a detailed description of the submarine and explains how the machines operate. Written in a candid tone, this memoir carries the reader along for the epic ride. Praise for Deep Venture “Penley uses his naval experience and considerable talent as a storyteller to write a humorous and totally engaging account of life beneath the sea. Against a backdrop of Cold War nuclear deterrence, and the ever-present personal danger faced by submariners, he takes us down the hatch into the claustrophobic confines of his submarine and life among an odd collection of sailors willing to endure the hardship of being submerged and incommunicado for months at a time. . . . A unique and highly entertaining story.” —Michael Archer, author of A Patch of Ground: Khe Sanh Remembered “Clear and lucid writing immediately grips the reader as Penley explores the tension, fear, humor, and adventure of navy and submarine life, enriched with a realism and accuracy that is often missing from such accounts. This story deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone who reads and admires true stories of adventure at sea.” —James Ennes, author of Assault on the Liberty

Book excerpt: NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • “[Dunthorne’s] precocious talent and cheerful fondness for the teenage male are showcased in Submarine. . . . Oliver’s voice is funny and dead-on.”—The New York Times Book Review(Editors’ Choice) At once a self-styled social scientist, a spy in the baffling adult world, and a budding, hormone-driven emotional explorer, Oliver Tate is stealthily nosing his way forward through the murky and uniquely perilous waters of adolescence. His objectives? Uncovering the secrets behind his parents’ teetering marriage, unraveling the mystery that is his alluring and equally quirky classmate Jordana Bevan, and understanding where he fits in among the mystifying beings in his orbit. Struggling to buoy his parents’ wedded bliss, deep-six his own virginity, and sound the depths of heartache, happiness, and the business of being human, what’s a lad to do? Poised precariously on the cusp of innocence and experience, Oliver Tate aims to damn the torpedoes and take the plunge. BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Joe Dunthorne's Wild Abandon. Praise for Submarine “[Joe Dunthorne is] probably destined to be compared with Mark Haddon and Roddy Doyle.”—The Miami Herald “This absolutely winning debut novel isn’t so much a coming-of-age tale as it is a reflection on what it means to be a certain age and of an uncertain mind.”—Los Angeles Times “A brilliant first novel by a young man of ferocious comic talent.”—The Times (London) “Preternaturally wise, slightly devious and highly entertaining.”—USA Today

Book excerpt: In November 1957, two friends, both accomplished sportsmen, headed north out of the Atlanta area on Hwy. 41 towards Cartersville and the Etowah River for a perfectly innocent day of duck hunting, a ritual repeated thousands of times by hunters everywhere, every season. When they did not return, family, friends, neighbors, National Guard, and other state agencies launched a massive search—an event that became front-page news and put the members of two large, close-knit families on an indefinite hold. Read about the ensuing weeks of mystery, discovery, and trauma—as seen through the eyes of the eleven-year-old daughter of one of the men. Don’t miss her “true definition of closure,” which will resonate with survivors, victims and readers alike. The story takes place during a by-gone era following the end of World War II, when the “old South” meets the “new.” Quaint customs, charming language, and unquestioned values of the day would soon be lost forever. Fast forward to present-day, and the mystery takes on new life when the grandsons of one of the men undertake a brand new search and uncover an unexpected treasure. Rolling Waters is an intimate story told candidly, but with heart, love, and above all, hope.

Book excerpt: “A lighthearted, entertaining trip down Memory Lane” (Kirkus Reviews), Don’t Make Me Pull Over! offers a nostalgic look at the golden age of family road trips—before portable DVD players, smartphones, and Google Maps. The birth of America’s first interstate highways in the 1950s hit the gas pedal on the road trip phenomenon and families were soon streaming—sans seatbelts!—to a range of sometimes stirring, sometimes wacky locations. In the days before cheap air travel, families didn’t so much take vacations as survive them. Between home and destination lay thousands of miles and dozens of annoyances, and with his family Richard Ratay experienced all of them—from being crowded into the backseat with noogie-happy older brothers, to picking out a souvenir only to find that a better one might have been had at the next attraction, to dealing with a dad who didn’t believe in bathroom breaks. Now, decades later, Ratay offers “an amiable guide…fun and informative” (New York Newsday) that “goes down like a cold lemonade on a hot summer’s day” (The Wall Street Journal). In hundreds of amusing ways, he reminds us of what once made the Great American Family Road Trip so great, including twenty-foot “land yachts,” oasis-like Holiday Inn “Holidomes,” “Smokey”-spotting Fuzzbusters, twenty-eight glorious flavors of Howard Johnson’s ice cream, and the thrill of finding a “good buddy” on the CB radio. An “informative, often hilarious family narrative [that] perfectly captures the love-hate relationship many have with road trips” (Publishers Weekly), Don’t Make Me Pull Over! reveals how the family road trip came to be, how its evolution mirrored the country’s, and why those magical journeys that once brought families together—for better and worse—have largely disappeared.

Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestseller, Rolling Stone founder, co-editor, and publisher Jann Wenner offers a "touchingly honest" and "wonderfully deep" memoir from the beating heart of classic rock and roll (Bruce Springsteen). Jann Wenner has been called by his peers “the greatest editor of his generation.” His deeply personal memoir vividly describes and brings you inside the music, the politics, and the lifestyle of a generation, an epoch of cultural change that swept America and beyond. The age of rock and roll in an era of consequence, what will be considered one of the great watersheds in modern history. Wenner writes with the clarity of a journalist and an essayist. He takes us into the life and work of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Bono, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few. He was instrumental in the careers of Hunter S. Thompson, Tom Wolfe, and Annie Leibovitz. His journey took him to the Oval Office with his legendary interviews with Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, leaders to whom Rolling Stone gave its historic, full-throated backing. From Jerry Garcia to the Dalai Lama, Aretha Franklin to Greta Thunberg, the people Wenner chose to be seen and heard in the pages of Rolling Stone tried to change American culture, values, and morality. Like a Rolling Stone is a beautifully written portrait of one man’s life, and the life of his generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As us four brothers were growing up, I felt there was something different about us that just wasn't in conformity to other youngsters in our area. This affected our lifestyle, our schooling process, and of course, our lonely secluded family life. We all want to grow up in a lovable happy home together, like other kids in our neighborhood. Just because we didn't have the nice clothes, a big beautiful fancy house, new car, I didn't feel equal or the same as others. We had to make the best of what we had on our rural farm, then get uprooted, and moved from one home to another that I began to feel abnormal or different. Why did I feel this way, why am I here, and what was I supposed to do with my life? I grew up not knowing what my real purpose in life was to be. My horrible dealings with alcohol led me into depression, suicidal tendencies, and never-ending sins of the world. I was hurt from no parental love and felt lonely and abandoned, abused, and filled with guilt, hate, and anger at myself and many others. It never left or went away. I seemed like a no-win case, but it all changed when I went to my second rehab to get sober where I met a different person who changed the course of my life. It was here that I was introduced to the Lord and Savior of the world, Jesus. It was he who kept me from further killing myself with alcohol and the devious works of Satan. My life has changed drastically and was led to an awesome God who truly loves me. It was soon after all this I met the first true love of my life. Without her, I would not have made it at all. It's through the daily reading of God's Word and prayer that keeps me from backsliding down the wrong path again. I'm also hoping that through this book, that if just one person who is suffering from the same problems gets just one helpful thing from it, then this book was intended to be written and worth it. Amen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sailing Upwind is more than just another memoir of a distinguished former naval officer‘s highly diverse career. This book by Admiral James “Sandy” Winnefeld is also intended to offer useful reflections regarding how he accepted and managed risk along the way, as well as a concise description of the qualities one must develop to become a successful leader. Winnefeld began his career as an F-14 fighter pilot and TOPGUN instructor, commanded an aircraft carrier, and then served in a variety of flag officer billets on the way to becoming the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This book describes in an entertaining and humble manner how that journey unfolded and the lessons he attaches to it. The reader learns what it is like to become a Navy fighter pilot, and to fly, fight, and takeoff and land from an aircraft carrier – including a harrowing description of ejecting from an F-14 at night far from land. Winnefeld describes the culture of excellence at the real TOPGUN and the Navy's nuclear propulsion program. He recounts how he learned to lead the men and women who operate at every level of Navy operational command, from squadron to ship to fleet. Finally, the author presents a behind-the-scenes look at how decisions are made at the highest levels of government regarding whether and how those forces will be used, and how they are acquired. In the process, Winnefeld provides descriptions of how, by challenging existing assumptions and processes and through relentless creativity, he was able to lead change. He reflects on how the risk associated with such changes should be accepted and managed. The title Sailing Upwind—in which a sailboat must be operated against a prevailing force field to make progress in the right direction—is an apt metaphor for the bent for pushing against the system Winnefeld describes throughout the book.

How was that possible, though, if it remained tied to the pier essentially for two years? This account contains the musings and observations of one junior officer attempting to stay sane aboard mighty Pelican.
