Book excerpt: I had always believed in the healing power of our Lord, and viewed my life as one of service to Him via the practice of medicine. But, in retrospect, I had a deeper trust in the power of modern medicine and science than I did in Jesus Christ and His fully accomplished work on the Cross. My thinking was flawed, but, as I grew in my walk with the Lord and meditated on Scripture more fully, I began to see the superiority of faith over the limited interventions modern medical science had to offer, and that this interplay between faith and science was not mutually exclusive, but complimentary, for the spiritual aspects of our lives illuminate and empower the carnal aspects of intellect and physical senses. I began jotting notes to myself related to this interplay of faith and healing and science, and just filed them away...for years. IThen, in December of 2017, a baby was born to a first time mother of mine, his little body riddled with the most fulminant form of acute lymphoblasic leukemia, almost always fatal. His absolutely miraculous healing was the impetus to start putting these thoughts into writing, in the form of weekday morning emails entitled “A Christian Doctor’s View of Healing, Faiith, and Science”. It was soon made clear to me that these writings were to take the form of a year long devotional book, comprised of short weekday messages that are intimately linked, such that they can be read through as a book. And that book was to paint a picture, and that picture was to be of a face, and the face was to be that of Jesus, for He is the source of all healing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shitfaced: Musings of a Former Drunk, Seamus Kirst explores the milestones of self-destruction that marked his coming of age. At 13, he went to the ER for swallowing a bottle of pills. By 16, he was already a veteran of several in- and out-patient rehab programs for alcohol. As he walked across the stage at his high school graduation – just after delivering his valedictorian address – he had already been hospitalized three times for alcohol poisoning. The situation only accelerated at Brown University, where he abused a plethora of drugs, from Xanax to cocaine, while his alcohol abuse intensified. Most terrifying was his attitude toward his own dissolution, his rationalization of behaviors that brought him ever closer to death. In that sense, Shitfaced, is not just a memoir, but a dehortation for those who find themselves in the same place; Kirst goes back to find a self that he barely survived.

Book excerpt: These Morning Musings are based on questions and observations inspired by trans-national business transactions. In this book, the author follows legal and business developments in different countries and muses about them. Whether it is about business decisions, immigration challenges, trademark disputes, or liability management, all of these topics ignite the global thinking. The book gives you food for thought and many reasons to reflect and to smile. Curiosity about these topics will most likely morph into a larger contemplation to foster a better understanding of global trends. - mus·ing (myo͞o′zĭng), adj. Deep in thought; contemplative, n.1. Contemplation; meditation 2. A product of contemplation; a thought The other day a friend called me and started the conversation by saying, "OK, boomer," and he laughed. I realized he did not mean me personally - clearly, I am not a boomer by the common generational approach - but it was his way of saying, "I watched your musing, and I liked it." Additionally, I get this question, sometimes during dinner meetings or small talk, "What is the source of your ideas?" Do you want to know what inspires me every day? Where do I develop the ideas for the Morning Musings?Clearly talking with my family about life and the world, traveling to different continents, working as the Chairman of an international law firm serving global clients and their businesses: All of this together is the ongoing source of my inspiration. My musings are based on questions and observations arising out of working trans-national business transactions. I also follow legal and business developments in different countries. And there is so much food for thought. Or reason to reflect and smile. Is there time to allow this thought to develop and to morph into a contemplation? "Brief and packed full of information, insight and humor. These Morning Musings have opened my eyes and helped me better understand today's ever changing world. OK Boomer, do you want to start your day out armed with information? I sure do! I start my day with the Morning Musing. These timely talks somehow make their way into my daily life and make me seem smarter. By the way, has anyone found our family Christmas Pickle ornament? Warning: The Musings may make you think and want to know more."- Kenneth W. Bacon, President and CEO Horizon Electric, Inc. "Refreshing view on a topic which continues to be discussed during these unprecedented times. Reinhard's ability to make these thought provoking discussions seem like you are sitting down with your neighbor make this book a must read." - Rich Baich, Chief Information Security Officer, AIG "Each musing, which is itself only a few paragraphs, provides a full depth and wealth of information. Despite there being a lot of information within each musing, the book is produced in a way that is easy to read and understand. I believe this is Reinhard's deeper idea, not just to inform, but to make me as the reader or listener think or smile about the world and humanity at large." - Dr. Henning O. Bruns, Chairman of the Leadership Committee of the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC South), North Carolina Chapter - Senior Partner CON MOTO Consulting Group Inc. "Reinhard has a vast knowledge of complex global business issues and distills his thoughts for a quick read. His wit contributes to very entertaining and informative musings. A great way to get up to speed with current events affecting international business operations." - Johnelle Causwell, Citizen Diplomacy Program Director, International House Charlotte "Reinhard's musings are a great way to get a comprehensive, in-depth overview of the current market situation.. Especially now, that rules & regulations change so quickly, it's important to stay on top. These musings are definitely a great, effective way to do so."- Hans H. Hilgenstock, Key Account Manager Carolinas, Kuehne + Nagel, Inc.

Some 40% of all Earthlings now suffer from this condition which covers the gamut of Heart Disease, Cancer, Neurodegeneration, Liver disease, and PCOS. What is worth knowing is that ALL of these and related conditions start with Fatigue, known in scientific circles as "energy deficiency." 40% of the Earth's population has a formal clinical diagnosis that their mitochondria cannot make adequate levels of energy. [Cu]re Fatigue is a book devoted to educating the masses and their doctors exactly how and why this is happening. Our mitochondria make energy by a series of enzymes to work synergistically to create ATP, the cellular currency of energy. These mitochondrial enzyme reactions rely on minerals that are easily lost to stress. This book explains these concepts, how these challenges can be overcome and introduces the reader to a simple, proven Root Cause Protocol that is designed to generate more energy and end fatigue. This book is designed for those seeking the truth in human metabolism and those wanting to take back control of their health. It is one part textbook and one part user's guide based on a decade of research and client experience.

Book excerpt: In America, pie is a food--and a concept--that carries unusual resonance. In Humble Pie, Anne Dimock offers a delightful combination of memoir, pie quotes, inspiration, recipes, travel writing, and assorted philosophical, cultural, and culinary musings on this powerful yet humble dessert. Anne Dimock grew up in a household where, she notes, "A dearth of good pie was a hardship I never encountered, never knew must be borne up by most folk." When she realized that the decline of the American pie civilization might be a harbinger of even deeper cultural problems, Anne became a woman on a mission to save pie from extinction. Dimock shares her thoughts on the Zen of making pie crust, the politics of pie, judging a man's character according to his pie protocol, state fair pie competitions, the kinship between pie and baseball, and the search for edible pie at roadside diners. Folksy and full of humor, Humble Pie is more than just an evocative journey through a life lived in pie. It is a culinary manifesto for a pie renaissance, inviting readers to take up their rolling pins and revive an endangered slice of American culture. Dimock advises us all to "Roll back the apprehension, the doubt, and enter the childlike state of grace where all things are possible and anything lost can be found again. The pie you seek resides not only in memory and imagination--your next piece of pie begins right here."

This book is a convenient and accessible description of the underlying principles and practice of randomized controlled trials and their role in clinical decision-making. Structured in a jargon-free question-and-answer format, each chapter provides concise and understandable information on a different aspect of randomized controlled trials, from the basics of trial design and terminology to the interpretation of results and their use in driving evidence-based medicine. The authors end each chapter with their musings, going beyond the evidence or citations, and sometimes even beyond orthodox correctness to share their thoughts and concerns about different aspects of randomized controlled trials, and their role within the health system. Updated to include insights from the last decade, this second edition challenges over-reliance on randomized controlled trials by debating their strengths and limitations and discussing their optimal use in modern healthcare. It also includes a new and increasingly relevant chapter on the ethics of randomized trials. World renowned writers and thinkers Drs Jadad and Enkin bring you this invaluable book for busy health professionals who wish to understand the theory of randomized controlled trials and their influence on clinical, research or policy decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The autobiography every true American has been waiting for: a shockingly candid and raw confessional from a national treasure. From his humble beginnings in a desolate Iowa coal mining town, his years at Our Lady Queen of Chewbacca High School to his odds-defying climb to the dizzying heights of becoming America’s most trusted and beloved television News Anchor, Ron Burgundy pulls no punches in Let Me Off at the Top! In his very own words Burgundy reveals his most private thoughts, his triumphs and his disappointments. His life reads like an adventure story complete with knock down fights, beautiful women and double-fisted excitement on every page. He has hunted jackalopes with Bobby Kennedy and Peter Lawford, had more than his share of his amorous exploits, and formed the greatest on-air team in the history of televised news. Along the way, he hobnobbed with people you wish you knew and some you honestly wish you didn't -- celebrities, presidents, presidents' wives, celebrities' wives, dogs, and, of course Veronica Corningstone, the love of his life. Walter Cronkite, Barbra Streisand, Katie Couric, the list goes on. Who didn’t Mr. Burgundy, or “Ron” as he is known to his friends, rub elbows with in the course of his colorful and often criminal life? This may well be the most thrilling book ever written, by a man of great physical, moral and spiritual strength and not surprisingly a great literary talent as well. This book deserves a real shot at a Pulitzer Prize. In fact if it doesn’t win one then we will finally have proof that the Pulitzer is rigged. Ron Burgundy has taken the time to write a book. We owe it to him, as honest Americans, to read it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Patients and doctors alike are keenly aware that the medical world is in the midst of great change. We live in an era of continuous healthcare reforms, many of which focus on high volume, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This compelling, thoughtful book is the response of a practicing physician who explains how population-based reforms are diminishing the relationship between doctor and patients, to the detriment of both. As an antidote to stubbornly held traditions, Dr. Abraham M. Nussbaum suggests ways that doctors and patients can learn what it means to be ill and to seek medical assistance. Drawing on personal stories, validated studies, and neglected history, the author develops a series of metaphors to explore a doctor's role in different healthcare reform scenarios: scientist, technician, author, gardener, teacher, servant, and witness. Each role shapes what physicians see when they encounter a patient. Dr. Nussbaum cautions that true healthcare reform can happen only when those who practice medicine can see, and be seen by, their patients as fellow creatures. His memoir makes a hopeful appeal for change, and his insights reveal the direction that change must take."--Jacket flap.

Book excerpt: Now with a new afterword from the author. "An important and extremely timely book...Get it, read it, and talk to others about it." --Timothy Keller In this unvarnished account of faith inside the world’s most powerful office, Michael Wear provides unprecedented insight into the highs and lows of working as a Christian in government. Reclaiming Hope is an insider’s view of the most controversial episodes of the Obama administration, from the president’s change of position on gay marriage and the transformation of religious freedom into a partisan idea, to the administration’s failure to find common ground on abortion and the bitter controversy over who would give the benediction at the 2012 inauguration. The book is also a passionate call for faith in the public square, particularly for Christians to see politics as a means of loving one’s neighbor and of pursuing justice for all. Engrossing, illuminating, and at time provocative, Reclaiming Hope changes the way we think about the relationship of politics and faith. "A pre-Trump book with serious questions for our politics in the age of Trump...More necessary than ever before." -- Sojourners "Should be read by Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, and all who are concerned by the state of our politics.” --Kirsten Powers, USA Today columnist and CNN political analyst "Reclaiming Hope will certainly give you a fresh perspective on politics--but, more importantly, it may also give you a fresh perspective on faith.”--Andy Stanley, senior pastor of North Point Ministries "An important and extremely timely book...Get it, read it, and talk to others about it." --Timothy Keller, author of Reason for God "An important contribution in this age of religious and political polarization." --J.D. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy "A lifeline for these times." --Ann Voskamp, author of One Thousand Gifts and The Broken Way “We can hope, and this book can help us.” --Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention

Book excerpt: A stripper bitten by a venomous snake, a boy in suspended animation after collapsing in the snow, a woman who survived being run over by a train. These are some of the intriguing and baffling cases I have encountered in my medical career. I have never ceased to be amazed at the bewildering assortment of medical mysteries that have been thrown at me. Some were head scratchers, some were tragic, some amusing. Some defy explanation altogether. They have shown me that people are strange, conflicted, frail and remarkable creatures. They have also shown me how some patients, even when brought to their knees by their ailments, can courageously struggle back onto their feet. These experiences have taught me humility and caution. Faced with events I couldn't control and outcomes that defied all predictions, it often seemed that medicine was a series of traps designed to trip me up or, perhaps, a capricious gremlin whispering confusing advice in my ear and plotting to humiliate me.This collection of stories highlights the murky confusion that doctors face when confronted by the unexpected. They remind us that certainty in medicine is not assured and assumptions can be misleading. The practice of medicine, for better or worse, is a curious mix of science, art and divination and the results are never entirely predictable.
