Book excerpt: Magic doesn't work the way you think it will, but it's what Kate needs as she confronts friendship trouble, her parents' divorce, and Grammy's dementia in this lyrical middle-grade coming-of-age novel for fans of Half a Chance and The Same Stuff as Stars. Kate has trouble believing in magic, especially since the people she loves keep leaving her. But when Grammy tells her the three rules of everyday magic--believe, give, and trust--Kate can't resist believing, at least a little. Following Grammy's advice, she tries to bring her father, her best friend, and even Grammy herself back to her. Nothing turns out as Kate expects, yet the magic of giving--of trusting that if you love and give, good things will happen, even if you don't see them happen--will change Kate and her family forever.

But things start to change one day, when his neighbor—and possible new friend—Sam lends Oliver a magic hat that takes him back to the 18th- and 19th-century world of Thomas Jefferson. Oliver and his sisters—Cassie, the nice one, and Ruby, the annoying one—end up learning more about Jefferson than they'd expected. And Oliver finds that his new neighborhood might not be so terrible after all. Thomas Jefferson and the Return of the Magic Hat is the third in The President and Me series that began with George Washington and the Magic Hat and John Adams and the Magic Bobblehead. This new adventure brings back previous characters Sam, Ava, J.P. (blink and you might miss them, though!), and of course the cantankerous talking hat itself.

Book excerpt: Where does business come from? That's the question every real estate agent asks but few have a truthful answer for. In an industry constantly selling the "easy button" and overrun with shiny widgets, agents are pulled in multiple directions at once, each promising that if they "just do this," their dreams of success and fortune will come true. After 20 years in the business, thousands of home sales, and hundreds of thousands of coaching calls, Tim and Julie Harris tell the hard truths about what it really takes to make it in real estate. The new, revised edition of Harris Rules outlines specific, actionable, and proven rules of engagement that any agent—rookie or veteran—can count on as they pursue their real-estate funded goals and dreams. Harris Rules lays the groundwork, beginning with how agents need to think about the business. Moving them forward with a step-by-step action plan, Tim and Julie show agents how to create longevity by scaling the business and then teach them how to monetize it. In this book, you'll learn: - How to control your mindset to get more things done, even when you don't "feel" like it - The ideal schedule of a top-producing agent and how to focus it on what matters, profit - Why you can't rely on only one method of generating leads - How to use the proven Seven-Step Listing Process to win the listing virtually every time - How to really achieve financial freedom With all-new case studies, resources, and Q&As for the highly motivated agent, Harris Rules covers tricky topics with much-needed frankness: making a profit, why having a team isn't the "golden calf," gaining multiple lead sources (that you don't have to pay for!), focusing on listings, and the fact that repetitious boredom does pay off. Tim and Julie will tell you the truth: Harris Rules is the savvy agent's all-inclusive, no-BS guide to succeed in real estate.

Keira is an 8-year old with red hair, hot pink glasses, and dresses like Pippi Longstockings. She is not as confident as her fashion statement suggests. Her dreams of being a heroine are overshadowed by a cloud of fear that percolates within her extraordinary imagination. Her grandfather, Papa, is just the opposite. His dress is conservative, and before he retired he thrived on adventure. He was a spy. When Keira finds a magic hat that gives her astonishing powers, he invites her to join him in his new spy agency. That is when the Keira and Papa Detective Agency is formed. The trust, teasing and mutual affection they have for each other carries them through a stream of disappointments and challenges as they attempt to solve the mystery. For Keira, the adventure is more than just this case. For her, there are two mysteries: The Case of the Missing Crown Jewels, and the mystery of a new culture. Her dialogue with Sir Hazledine, the Secretary to the Queen, provides insight and humor to the latter. Keira has two allies. Her American Doll, Emma and her mischievous dog, Waffles. Book excerpt: An enchanting fantasy adventure about the importance of bravery, resourcefulness, and following your heart from a debut celebrity author. The most important rule to follow when you hunt for hat ingredients is this: keep wildness in your wits and magic in your fingertips. In Cordelia’s London, magic is real and is woven into objects created by the five Maker families: the Hatmakers, the Bootmakers, the Watchmakers, the Cloakmakers, and the Glovemakers. Growing up in her father Prospero’s footsteps, eleven-year-old Cordelia Hatmaker has learned the family’s ancient skills and secrets so she can one day make her own enchanted hats. When Prospero and his ship are lost at sea during an important ingredient expedition, her grief-stricken aunt and uncle must turn their attention toward fulfilling a decree to create a Peace Hat for the king. But Cordelia refuses to accept that her father is gone for good and desperately begins making plans to find him. Then, the Peace Hat is stolen—along with the Peace Boots, Watch, Cloak, and Gloves—and Cordelia realizes that there is a more menacing plot against the Makers’ Guild, and that Prospero Hatmaker’s disappearance may be connected. Cordelia must uncover the truth about who is behind the thefts if she is to save the Makers and find out what really happened to her father. Full of magic, surprise, and adventure, Tamzin Merchant’s sparkling debut introduces a captivating heroine and her extraordinary world.

Book excerpt: sports african american studies Even before the desegregation of the military and public education and before blacks had full legal access to voting, racial barriers had begun to fall in American sports. This collection of essays shows that for many African Americans it was the world of athletics that first opened an avenue to equality and democratic involvement. Race and Sport showcases African Americans as key figures making football, baseball, basketball, and boxing internationally popular, though inequalities still exist today. Among the early notables discussed is Fritz Pollard, an African American who played professional football before the National Football League established a controversial color barrier. Another, the boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, exemplifies the black American athlete as an international celebrity. African American women also played an important role in bringing down the barriers, especially in the early development of women's basketball. In baseball, both African American and Hispanic players faced down obstacles and entered the sports mainstream after World War II. One essay discusses the international spread of American imperialism through sport. Another shows how mass media images of African American athletes continue to shape public perceptions. Although each of these six essays explores a different facet of sports in America, together they comprise an analytical examination of African American society's tumultuous struggle for full participation both on and off the athletic field. Charles K. Ross, interim director of African American studies and an associate professor of history and African American studies at the University of Mississippi, is the author of Outside the Lines: African Americans and the Integration of the National Football League."

Book excerpt: It takes any number of forms. Epigrams. Aphorisms. Fragments. Sayings. Dicta. Sententiae. Facetiae. Pearls of wisdom. Fractions of truth. Maxims. Definitions. Jottings. Miscellaneous musings. Meditations. Ricordi. Pensées. Ephemera. Miniatures. Sketches. Vignettes. Denkbilder. Capriccios. Tiny 'fires without flames' ... In returning to these genres, Matches goes back to the drawing board of modern critique. It sets out to rekindle short-form literary-philosophical reflection, with roots in the Antiquity of Heraclitus and Hippocrates, apogee in the French moralistes (La Rochefoucauld, Pascal, Chamfort ...), and late splendour in German letters (Nietzsche, Kraus, Jünger ...). Moving from art and aesthetics to philosophies past and present, through natural and technological landscapes, beneath the constellations of politics, history and ethics, along the byways of contemporary literary culture--the slow reader with a little spare time will not fail to be struck. Here are pages to peruse and mistrust, texts to think with, a book to put down and ponder, to ponder and put down. A tome to keep handy, handle often, and strike repeatedly against the rough patches of the mind.
