Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoirs in this book are, in many ways, somewhat different from typical memoirs. The book is arranged topically and not chronologically. It is not a celebration of the individual's life. Rather, it is highly descriptive, colorful, emotional, and honest. The author is sincere, and may have engaged in a self-discovery of his life. He quite bravely, and with pride and understanding, reviews the main facets of his life. The story is told with a depth of feeling that is remarkable.

Book excerpt: "There's a secret trapdoor, a kind of magic key into every project," says Bartholomew Voorsanger, whose life and work are chronicled in UNFOLDED, How Architecture Saved My Life". The book, by award-winning author Alastair Gordon, is more of a personal memoir than a conventional monograph, tracing as it does the architect's picaresque journey from an orphanage in the Bronx to an adoptive family in San Francisco, to the ivied halls of Princeton and Harvard, to an apprenticeship with architect I.M. Pei and the establishment of an independent practice in 1978. A signature sensibility--minimal yet elegantly crafted, with a jeweler's attention to detail--evolved through early commissions--a private barge on the Hudson River, a master plan for the Brooklyn Museum--in which he explored the inherent mysteries of form, scale, and light. A glass-and-steel addition for the Morgan Library (1992) was hailed by the New York Times as an artful "combination of intimacy and grandeur". For the Asia Society in Manhattan, Voorsanger created a luminous garden courtyard and a serpent-like staircase which was based, in part, on a Ming Dynasty flask that the architect found in the museum's collection.Undulating trajectories of work and life intersect throughout the story. In many of Voorsanger's projects there are suggestions of a pilgrimage across space, a sequence of opening and closing, turning and unfolding, as with a series of pavilions designed for the World War II Museum in New Orleans, the wing-like roof of a mountain retreat for Russian oligarch Roman Abromovich, a twisting control tower for Newark Airport, or the highly sculpted interior of a bachelor's loft in Tribeca. In some of the later work there's an unsettled Dr. Caligari geometry of axial rotations and splintered spaces. Walls tilt back and overlap. Natural light penetrates the outer membrane. Multi-faceted roofs engage the sky. Voorsanger's architectural practice served as an emotional anchor through trying times and helped to bring a sense of ceremonial order to life's messy uncertainties. There was the adoption of two Iranian orphans; divorce from his first wife; a broken business partnership; the loss of his second wife to cancer; and a near-fatal embolism. In 1987, Voorsanger's twenty-nine-year-old daughter, Roxanna, was senselessly murdered. As a form of eulogy, the architect designed a new kind of housing prototype. It was an elegiac gesture from father to daughter in which deep, personal loss was transformed, somehow, into healing space. "I don't give a damn about myself, but I care deeply about my work," he says, acknowledging the number of times that his art has rescued him from a nagging sense of despair and existential dislocation. "Architecture has literally saved my life".

Book Synopsis Escape to Be Free in Pursuit of Luck by : Tom Krieser
Download or read book Escape to Be Free in Pursuit of Luck written by Tom Krieser and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a life story of a Hungarian refugee born in Slovakia in 1938 amidst the beginning of World War II. Parents were a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. Following the end of WWII, the Krieser family moved to Hungary, and Tom escaped directly following the Hungarian Revolution against Soviet Russia, which was crushed by the Red Army. Arriving in Canada with nothing but a diary, a birth certificate, and a determination to succeed, Tom was lucky enough to meet up with the Sheehan family, who helped to determine much of Toms future. The Sheehans helped Tom attend and successfully graduate in engineering from St. FX University. It was in the town of Saint John, New Brunswick (Canada), that Tom met his wife-to-be Jane OLeary. They married in 1960 and had two children (Paul and Mark in 1961 and 1963, respectively) growing up in Montreal, Canada. Toms career commenced as a young engineer, but over the years, he eventually was elevated to become the president and CEO of one of Canadas best recognized pulp and paper machinery manufacturing enterprises with up to five hundred employees. Surrounded by a great team of professionals and many great customers in a dynamic, competitive, yet surprisingly friendly business environment, the company became known for its research and development activities, machinery innovation, and commitment to deliver value to its customers the world over. Despite the enormous stress of the job he held, Tom found time to dedicate much attention to his kids (having become a spokesperson for the English section of the Quebec PTA [Parent Teacher Association]) and his church, including leadership positions in the Worldwide Marriage Encounter movement. Tom even became a deacon in the Catholic Church in the diocese of Montreal. Toms marriage to Jane came to an end in 1989, and in 1993, Tom married his wife of today, Linda Thibodeau. Lindas daughter became like Toms own, and that is a story in its own. Tom and Linda live in beautiful Naples, Florida, today. The book is full of twists and turns with experiences gained through a very enriching life and extensive business, family, and traveling adventures. Tom still works today because he loves what he does and thrives to be the best in all things he undertakes. This book is a product of his love of family, business, friends, and life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s fans have wondered when he would write a memoir. Well, after four decades as a teacher of self-empowerment and the best-selling author of more than 40 books, Wayne has finally done just that! However, he has written it in a way that only he can—with a remarkable take-home message for his longtime followers and new readers alike—and the result is an exciting new twist on the old format. Rather than a plain old memoir, Wayne has gathered together quantum-moment recollections. In this revealing and engaging book, Wayne shares dozens of events from his life, from the time he was a little boy in Detroit up to present day. In unflinching detail, he relates his vivid impressions of encountering many forks in the road, taking readers with him into these formative experiences. Yet then he views the events from his current perspective, noting what lessons he ultimately learned, as well as how he has made the resulting wisdom available to millions via his lifelong dedication to service. As a reader, you will feel as if you are right there with Wayne, perusing his personal photo album and hearing about his family, his time in the service, how he writes his best-selling books, and so much more.In the process, you’ll be inspired to look back at your own life to see how everything you have experienced has led you to where you are right now. Wayne has discovered that there are no accidents. Although we may not be aware of who or what is"moving the checkers," life has a purpose, and each step of our journey has something to teach us. As he says, "I wasn’t aware of all of the future implications that these early experiences were to offer me. Now, from a position of being able to see much more clearly, I know that every single encounter, every challenge, and every situation are all spectacular threads in the tapestry that represents and defines my life, and I am deeply grateful for all of it." I Can See Clearly Now is an intimate look at an amazing teacher, but it also holds the key for seekers on a personal path of enlightenment. Wayne offers up his own life as an example of how we can all recognize the hand of the Divine steering our individual courses, helping us accomplish the mission we came here to fulfill.

Book Synopsis Journey Without a Map by : Donna Caruso
Download or read book Journey Without a Map written by Donna Caruso and published by Thistledown Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as generations pass, the pride of being Italian is in the genes of those who were raised in Italian immigrant families. Caruso's Journey Without A Map appropriately begins with pasta cooking instructions, and from that point the aroma of tomatoes, olives and red wine are never far from the stories she weaves of herself and the impact of her family. Whether making connections between her Uncle Nick's nose and her Roman ancestors, or detailing the daily rituals of her shepherdess mother on the Italian hillsides, Caruso relays the information in broad colourful strokes that are at once both inviting and humorous. With her earliest recollections of her family life in New Jersey, her father's grocery store, her mother's Catholic admonishments, the death of Santa Clause, the family habits and the ever-present smells from the kitchen brings to us her sense of belonging to a rich heritage. But Caruso's journal and journey are not all feel-good, romanticized Italian immigrant experience. There are those reflections on her mother's life that are as beautiful and intense as they are revealing; the portraits of her extended family members that stand outside the warmth of family love, and the tensions that develop when families are separated by geography and dreams. And though the wisdom of her father and mother guides her through her growing years, it would have to be their remembered love that guides Caruso through her own darkest hours of breast cancer and family break up. As generations of North Americans move farther away from their immigrant experience and origins, Caruso's Journey Without A Map conveys that in our increasingly homogenized cultural world what may best nourish us in our needs, shape us in our identities, and be our strength when we are weakest, is our family's heritage and love.
