In fact it was the original reason I became a loyal subscriber in the fi rst place: the thriceweekly columns of my all-time favorite writer, the late, great Lewis Grizzard. Trust me when I say that as a loyal University of Florida graduate it’s diffi cult for me to admit there is actually something good that came out of the University of Georgia, and that something would be Lewis Grizzard. Born and raised in nearby Moreland (I reside in Peachtree City, Georgia), Grizzard had a major influence on my writing style. This is my sixth self-published book; one of them sold so well a publisher came a-calling tobuy the rights to it. Now I’d like to take my writing to the next level. That’s where you come in. Consider this book as both my job application and resume for a position on your editorial staff. Everything here on the back cover is my cover letter to you. I leave you with one simple question: When do I start?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Football gave Ryan O'Callaghan a scholarship to Cal and the chance to earn millions in the NFL, but it also afforded him something far more important: a place to hide. As a closeted gay man, his helmet and pads became tools of deception...O'Callaghan, who retired in 2011 after four seasons, eventually found the courage to live his truth in retirement. His memoir offers an unsparing look at the nexus of sexuality and football." --Sports Illustrated "O'Callaghan came out as gay in 2017 after retiring from the league in 2011. Fearing condemnation while hiding his sexual orientation during a football career that spanned six seasons, O'Callaghan said he had regular suicidal thoughts while growing addicted to painkillers and he had elaborately planned his own death for retirement. In My Life On the Line, co-authored by Outsports co-founder Cyd Zeigler, O'Callaghan...credits then-Kansas City Chiefs executive Scott Pioli and Dr. Susan Wilson for saving his life once he came out to them." --USA Today "In a new book due out in September, O'Callaghan discusses his life story, including the treatment he received from former teammates after coming out." --Boston Globe "Former Patriots lineman Ryan O'Callaghan spent his entire career hiding his sexuality from his teammates, his friends and his family. He is now sharing that battle in his new book, My Life On The Line." --CBS Boston (WBZ TV) "O'Callaghan believes the NFL is moving in the right direction with social issues, albeit slowly...O'Callaghan is part of that change. And that change saved his life." --Boston Globe, feature on Ryan O'Callaghan "As one of the few openly gay former U.S. players, O'Callaghan's goal became making it easier for future athletes to be open about their sexuality and gender identity well before they enter professional sports." --Reuters "O'Callaghan is one of only a few openly gay former NFL players...In his upcoming memoir, My Life on the Line: How the NFL Damn Near Killed Me and Ended Up Saving My Life, O'Callaghan candidly discusses his addictions, mental health and struggles with his sexuality." --Washington Blade Ryan O'Callaghan's plan was always to play football and then, when his career was over, kill himself. Growing up in a politically conservative corner of California, the not-so-subtle messages he heard as a young man from his family and from TV and film routinely equated being gay with disease and death. Letting people in on the darkest secret he kept buried inside was not an option: better death with a secret than life as a gay man. As a kid, Ryan never envisioned just how far his football career would take him. He was recruited by the University of California, Berkeley, where he spent five seasons, playing alongside his friend Aaron Rodgers. Then it was on to the NFL for stints with the almost-undefeated New England Patriots and the often-defeated Kansas City Chiefs. Bubbling under the surface of Ryan's entire NFL career was a collision course between his secret sexuality and his hidden drug use. When the league caught him smoking pot, he turned to NFL-sanctioned prescription painkillers that quickly sent his life into a tailspin. As injuries mounted and his daily intake of opioids reached a near-lethal level, he wrote his suicide note to his parents and plotted his death. Yet someone had been watching. A member of the Chiefs organization stepped in, recognizing the signs of drug addiction. Ryan reluctantly sought psychological help, and it was there that he revealed his lifelong secret for the very first time. Nearing the twilight of his career, Ryan faced the ultimate decision: end it all, or find out if his family and football friends could ever accept a gay man in their lives.

This venture takes him to many far-away places and several trips around the world before semi-retirement.

It is rather, like its cover, a collage. It is a hundredmore or less observations into what is deep and meaningful in life, the reality around us, that gives the impression that reality is in fact a paradox, a friendly paradox. The book looks at theology, baseball, mathematics and the Bible. And it talks a lot about particle physics and quantum mechanics. Youll notice that it fails to mention rock stars and reality TV.

How do we preachers not merely survive, but thrive? For nearly a quarter century, Chris Neufeld-Erdman has preached the gospel--sustaining congregational life and emboldening Christian witness in the midst of this turbulence. He's also taught seminarians and mentored working pastors. His theology and practice of preaching is hammered out on the anvil of real life. It's tested. True. Useful. In this book, a veteran pastor meditates on everything from exegesis and sermon preparation to the way preachers might preach after tsunamis, hurricanes, and earthquakes. He reflects on what it means, for example, to host the text in the midst of what feels like a terminal state of war and violence, both abroad and at home, as well as the task of preaching in the midst of the massive anxiety produced by economic uncertainty and political gridlock. Here's a book that will inspire and guide you as a wise, empowered preacher--an ordinary agent of the extraordinary gospel.

Book excerpt: Three Roses: Living with Muscular Dystrophy and Marrying the Ideal Woman introduces a man who knew from his early childhood that he would face life with the ever-present reality of muscular dystrophy. Despite the challenges this condition presented him, Michael S. Hudecki achieved both professional success and personal contentment. His memoir relates the circumstances of his childhood, follows him through his academic years, and relates how, while pursuing his PhD in biology at the University of Buffalo, he came to know and to love the woman of his dreams—Rajmohini Sebastian, a Fulbright scholar from India. Despite three years of living apart following their graduation, they reunited at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Meeting her after she cleared customs checks, he presented her with a dozen red roses and three yellow roses, one for each year they spent apart. They married soon after that. Three Roses opens a window into the life of someone who faces life with courage and faith, who makes a valued and lasting contribution to the world’s body of knowledge concerning muscular dystrophy, and recognizes and follows the beckoning of his heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wars are started by a person or persons and are usually a quest for power for a person or a group of people and they don't really care how many people are killed nor how many families are losing a father, mother or brothers or whole families and their relatives. Sometimes, it is necessary to start a war by a peaceful nation against countries tat are harming and have the publically displayed their intentions to extend their borders by taking land from established country's land and people. This I would consider declaring a war to be the only necessary solution to the problem----but still a war with people getting maimed and killed. In World War One---Germany was the problem----once again lust for power. I wasn't even thought of at that period of time----in fact, I hadn't even arrived on the scene at that point of time. But, think about it for a moment-----there's not one inch of land that has increased in size in those thousands of years of civilization and wars. I was a training in Camp Blanding in Florida---we could look in any direction and there was a sign posted in large letters------"Kill or Be Killed"----"Kill or Be Killed". We were just 18 or 19 year old kids--------think about it--------"Kill or Be Killed"-what an education-but necessary to imprint it inside our young brains. It gave us young kids a reason to become killers-----hesitate for a second and you're dead. Back then in training, we used to repeat over and over was that wars were necessary to "Decrease The Surplus Population"--------It is most certainly a true statement.

Book excerpt: A continuing and on-going drama, LSU football is a string of improbable victories and sometimes valiant defeats, and within Game Of My Life: LSU Tigers the players responsible for perpetual story lift the curtain on their greatest acts. Here are the accounts of almost three dozen of the most remembered Tiger games of the last eight decades, as seen through the eyes -- and from the memories -- of some of LSU's most remembered athletes.Award-winning author and Louisiana-native Marty Muli takes you from the jumpy Ken Kavanaugh, a decorated bomber pilot who, in 1939, was nervous on his first plane ride en route to his four-touchdown day against Eastern-power Holy Cross; to the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina and JaMarcus Russell's last-gasp, game-winning touchdown pass against Arizona State for the displaced Bayou Bengals. In between, you hear from Billy Cannon as he decided to break a team rule and return a deep punt against Ole Miss. Run with Devery Henderson as he took a tipped pass out of the air to complete a 75-yard game-winning Hail Mary play with no time remaining against Kentucky. Shine with Tommy Hodson and Eddie Fuller on "The Night the Tigers Shook the Earth," as they deprived Auburn of a shot at the national title. Hold the fort with Max Fugler as he single-handedly stopped Ole Miss on four straight plays from inside the LSU 2-yard line. Carlos Carson's stunning NCAA-record five straight receptions for touchdowns against Rice; Kevin Faulk's 376 all-purpose yards to spearhead an amazing comeback against Houston; Ronnie Estay's 17-tackle game against Notre Dame; and Jim Taylor's 1957 heroics on offense and defense against Tulane to save Paul Dietzel's job -- and perhaps the '58national championship -- all appear in this volume of LSU history. Players such as Matt Mauck, Rohan Davey, and Marcus Spear also add their words to this storied collection that becomes a must-have for any true Tiger fan and Bayou football lov
