However, I do remember all of the events but not when the events happened. There are many small events that I remember but left out of the story. I could have added a few spicy events, but I wanted the stories to be accurate. I want my children to know a little of my life. Also I want the world, if the any of the world reads this book, to know how and why the Marines disassembles some of the mans character and reassembles the character to be combat ready to function for protecting this country. At that time of my life, a Marine always had a rifle in a protected rack ready to be issued ammunition for functioning as directed. After I was discharged, I wandered through life without direction for many years until I earned a degree with two Majors Mathematics and Physics. I was lucky and got a job with a company that manufactured missiles for submarines. It became a beautiful and a needed life. My life as a Marine and as a Mechanical Engineer has always been great. In 1952, the Marine Corps was very harsh, but I felt the Drill Instructors were not overly mean or really disrespectful. Their treatment was to have a Marine immediately responding to an order rather than cause many others to lose their lives. Marines are to protect this country and that is why I wanted to enlist in this outfit. When I reported to the aircraft flight line, I thought that the Boot Camp Instructor was a liar when he said that after boot camp we would be treated as a respectable man. A Staff Sergeant was sitting in a chair leaning back against the Quonset building. He was giving marching orders to a man with a back pack filled with sand and holding a rifle over his head. Oh hell, I am in more trouble. It is worth reading!

Book excerpt: Journalists possess critical responsibilities—one is simply to inform, another is to explain. As a military photojournalist during the Vietnam Era, Bob Bowen has captured visually with his camera and explained eloquently with his written words, the horrors and the honorable service of that period. In his new book My Life and Lens, Bowen articulates not only high action combat but the artful subtleties and tactics of warfare. He writes so well that the reader is pulled into the stories as if there in person. It is one thing to provide facts to America’s cumulative history; it’s another to display the facts through personal experiences. One will learn through reading this memoir that the life of a journalist in a war zone could be short-lived. It is dangerous work; but when successful, the work informs. This is what makes Bowen’s book such a compelling read. This memoir is an excellent pictorial and literary contribution not only to our nation’s history but in the recognition of those who honorably participated in that unpopular conflict. Respect is demonstrated to the families of the brave American heroes of this long-ago era by Bob Bowen’s memorializing them in his book. - Worth Earlwood Norman, Jr., retired account executive, EDS Corporation; author of two biographies—James Solomon Russell: Former Slave, Pioneer Educator, and Episcopal Evangelist (McFarland Publishing, 2012), William Jelks Cabaniss, Jr., Crossing Lines in His Business, Political and Diplomatic Life (Archdeacon Books, 2014) and one memoir, Six Bits: USMC 1962-1963 (My Years in USMC Bands 1962-1966) (Kindle eBook) I predict this is a great book by Bob Bowen who is writing about his own life during the Vietnam War. Bob is an expert photographer and was a war correspondent and a fine writer. This job was dangerous. This book could really take off and be a great success. I recommend it to anyone interested in the Vietnam War. The war was a harrowing experience for the men involved, and they have never been given proper credit for their bravery. - Don Gilmore, author, Eyewitness Vietnam The images you captured of our Marines in Vietnam are unequaled. Your book will be a smash hit! - Franklin Cox, author, Lullabies for Lieutenants My friend Bob Bowen has been a member of The American Legion for more than four decades, during which time he has been totally devoted to our country, our veterans, and their families. This memoir details his insights not only into war and coming home, but also into the people who are Americans. His life is proof that when most veterans take off their uniforms, they don’t quit their service to the nation. My Life and Lens is the inspiring story of how one Marine is still serving America. - Daniel S. Wheeler, National Adjutant, The American Legion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm Staying with My Boys is a firsthand look inside the life of one of the greatest heroes of the Greatest Generation. Sgt. John Basilone held off 3,000 Japanese troops at Guadalcanal after his 15-member unit was reduced to three men. At Iwo Jima he single-handedly destroyed an enemy blockhouse, allowing his unit to capture an airfield. Minutes later he was killed by an enemy artillery round. He was the only Marine in World War II to have received the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, and a Purple Heart and is arguably the most famous Marine of all time. I'm Staying with My Boys is the only family-authorized biography of Basilone, and it features photographs never before published. Distinctive among military biographies, the story is told in first person, allowing readers to experience his transformation, forged in the horrors of battle, from aimless youth to war hero known as "Manila John".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When America declared war in 1917, I was a few months past eighteen years of age and just finishing my first year in college. By the time I was to reenter in the fall for the second year, war activities were [under way] on a large scale. Men were going into some branch of the service on all sides. I felt that my family should do their bit in uniform, and my age designated me as the most appropriate one." This Texas A&M College student was Carl Andrew Brannen; these are his memoirs of a time when boys became men and your country became your life. Over There: A Marine in the Great War takes the reader on an almost two-year journey through his world as a young soldier in the war. Based on Brannen's memoirs recorded in the 1930s and photographs he took with a German camera as a soldier, this book describes day-to-day obstacles he and his fellow soldiers faced during Marine Corps training, movement to France, and mortal combat. "As I jumped for protection into a ditch nearby, a fusillade of bullets caught me below the heart on the left side, through one lens of the field glasses, and against my bandoleer of ammunition. The best I remember, ten bullets in my own belt exploded, but they had deflected the enemy bullets, saving my life." Brannen, though wounded in battle and in the hospital for three weeks, went on with 80th Company through the Meuse-Argonne campaign to the armistice on November 11. He pulled his months of duty in the occupation of the Rhineland and, at its end, earned a place in the Composite Regiment of men selected to represent the American Expeditionary Forces in the many ceremonial events of 1919. Complemented with a unique set of photographs by the author's son that retrace his father's military campaigns, Over There is a highly personal account, presented from an enlisted man's perspective of the battle fronts of Belleau Woods in the Château-Thierry sector, Soissons, Pont-a-Mousson, St. Mihiel, Blanc Mont Ridge, and the Meuse-Argonne battle. As a first hand commentary and a social document of life in the trenches during World War I, it is a useful contribution to military history. Brannen's personal accounts will touch and fascinate all those interested in World War I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condemned Marines is a work about a man whose dreams and aspirations were to serve God and country in that order. His objective was to return to the United States and pursue a career in medicine, driven by his mother naming him after a doctor. He was said to have healing powers by his mother. However, after a bout with injury and acquired a middle ear disease, his main bout turned to reestablishing his sanity due to head trauma and the disease of the middle ear, which comes with a lethal dose of vertigo. Within these pages, Bemley knows that you will find some resolve in helping your favorite veteran overcome some of the trials and tribulations that our veterans of foreign wars contend with on a daily basis. That individuals seemed so distant and alienated toward his loved ones has reason to be. He has little or no trust toward anyone because, in his mind, after being betrayed by the ones that he or she entrusted his or her life betray them. Then no one else is worthy of his or her trust. The most important part of returning to a somewhat normal individual torn by war is to have a good support system. Fortunately, Mr. Bemley had these things already in place when he returned to include a doctor and mentor in Washington DC. You won't succeed at first because one must learn to trust again, but never give up on your favorite veteran. The unknown soldier not only lies in a tomb. He also still roams the earth, known only to God because, in some cases, no one really wants to get to know him. They give up on him after he is alienated by war. And as Mr. Bemley says, not all of these veterans work their way back to reality and get to know themselves again and reclaim their identities as he did.

Book excerpt: The old saying, 'Once a marine, always a marine, ' held true for five brothers who followed their father, Frank Sr., into the United States Marine Corps. Frank Sr. was in the infantry. Each brother met varying degrees of success: Frank Jr. as a mechanic on Corsair fighter planes, Ralph as an expert rifleman and the only one of the six to become an officer, Roy as an airplane dispatch clerk, Lloyd in battlefield communications, and George as an expert on track vehicles. Service in the marines, a battlefield buddy named Walter Archumbald, and love for Mother bonded the five brothers on their otherwise dissimilar roads through life. Mother's Six Marines served in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an autobiography, Memoir if you will of four years of my life as a United States Marine. This particular story is dated from April 1963 through November 1967, while I was on active duty in the Marines. It also involves two tours of duty in Vietnam. It begins with enlistment while still in high school, boot camp, and then into my first year at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where I became a problem for the authorities, and my resulting turn around. It then transitions to the new me, experiences of traveling overseas, not only crossing the Atlantic to Spain, but also the Pacific to Okinawa, and finally, to Vietnam. While in Vietnam on my first tour, I became an "experiment", which resulted in some personal satisfaction. Next is my rotation back to the States, and new experiences as a non-commissioned officer. It was a time of homecoming and the renewing of a friendship from my first tour of duty in Vietnam. Then, I experienced more training and harassments, resulting in my extension of enlistment so that I could return for a second tour of duty in Vietnam. This is when the war in Vietnam really started to increase in events that could only be noticed by someone retuning there for a second tour. Someone like me, who has traveled through the northern part of South Vietnam right up to the Demilitarized Zone. This is when the story really gets to the heart of my memories. The changing of MOS (military occupational specialty) duties physically, but not on Marine Corps paper, where a truck driver/mechanic becomes a real Marine with a rifle. A grunt! An infantryman. The fears of not knowing, what is about to happen, and what to do, when it happens. These fears are not so much for myself, but for the Marines I feel responsible for. Then comes the relief from stress, it is all over. And recovery is now in a hospital. But yes, I, like a million others, still claim to this day to be a United States Marine.

Book excerpt: "Searing . . . An inspiring story."--Publishers Weekly "This is the . . . powerfully told story of an exceptionally determined human being.--Booklist On September 21, 1962, U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant Donald N. Hamblen's life changed forever . . . During a routine parachute jump, strong winds drove Hamblen into high tension wires at the outskirts of Camp Pendleton, California. Doctors were astounded that he had survived, but five days later his leg had to be amputated five inches below the knee. For most people, this would be the end of the story. Hamblen could have retired on medical pension, but for him, leaving the Marines was not an option. He fought to remain in the Marines, passed all of the arduous physical tests, and within eleven months was going to the field, parachuting, and scuba diving with First Force Recon Company. With more than two years in the super-secret Studies and Observation Group (SOG), he is one of the few Americans who can document having fought repeatedly in North Vietnam, and by his extraordinary example, he served as an inspiration to other badly wounded soldiers. This is his incredible story of courage, spirit, and self determination. "I have been associated with countless service personnel during my lifetime and Sergeant Hamblen tops the list of selfless, dedicated, all-AmeriCan'tough Marines. Words are inadequate to portray his life as fully as he has lived it, but his biography will serve as an inspiration and be a worthy model to be emulated by all who would aspire to be among the few good men--the Marines. As one of the 'Godfathers' of the Marine Corps deep reconnaissance, it has been a privilege to have known and served with Woody Hamblen. Semper Fidelis.--Herman Nickerson, Jr. Lt. Gen. USMC (Ret.)
