Book excerpt: Anthony Ferguson’s love of martial arts began when he was a little boy growing up in Miami, Florida. There he would go with his brother to see kung fu movies at the theater every Saturday. As a teenager, Ferguson decided he needed to know how to defend himself from an attack after a bad experience, and fate drew him to a school that taught the style of Shorin-Ryu Matsubayashi-Ryu karate. Shortly after graduating from high school, he earned his first-degree black belt, and he has never looked back. Now he recalls his lifelong journey in practicing Shorin-Ryu karate. Using his personal narrative, he hopes to encourage others to learn about this martial art and the benefits it can bring to those who study it: discipline, focus, respect for others, self-control, and awareness. In this memoir, one man shares the story of his path in the martial arts from student to master and recounts how studying karate as a teenager changed his life for the better.

Used for generations as a practical and pictorial guide, it contains over 1,000 photographs to document eighteen classic karate kata (preset forms) and seven yakusoku kumite (prearranged partner exercises), as well as basic techniques. This book is a precise and easily accessible pictorial guide to performance and perfection of traditional karate. The only book in English with photos of one of the great prewar masters demonstrating the proper execution of Okinawan karate, The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do is a bridge between karate's legendary past and the practitioners of today. This ingenious and imaginative text explains the historical landmarks in the development of style, vividly outlines its leading forms and techniques, and recalls noted Okinawan karate men of the past, including the author's teachers Ankichi Arakaki, Choki Motobu, and Chotoku Kyan.

Book excerpt: Discover the Secrets Between the Pictures! High-speed, ultra-high resolution, stop-action photography, combined with Hanshi Frank Grant's detailed instructions and insights gives you the level of detail you need to get the most from each technique. "One of the early pioneers of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu in America, Hanshi Frank Grant, has given us this valuable book containing the lessons passed down from Grandmaster Shoshin Nagamine. As one of the last old-timers, I highly recommend this book to present and future generations who not only study the technique of Matsubayashi but also its history and traditions." Jerry Figgiani, President, Shorin Ryu Karatedo International “I feel that this book is a great resource, not only to those who know the connection between Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu and Motobu-ha Shito-Ryu, but to all martial artists who wish to further their insight into the transition moves within kata.” Kevin Gurganus, Carolina Martial Arts Center 6th Dan - Motobu-ha Shito-Ryu, Kunibakai International; 4th Dan - Kobudo, Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinkokai Table of Contents: 1. During my first six–month training visit I asked the Master, “When do you know it all?” His response was “How long is infinity?” One advances in rank, skills and knowledge; building on the lessons and insights learned previously. The techniques that I teach my Shodans and Nidans would be totally lost on someone of an intermediate rank. At the same time, those black belts are not yet in a position to absorb the techniques I teach my Sandans and above. The Master helped me achieve very high levels of knowledge, but more importantly, he taught me how to continue to gain more from our techniques while remaining true to the kata he assembled and molded for us. The Master personally taught me details to techniques that he purposely did not put in his book because he knew that the majority of the readers may not comprehend. As part of my promise to the Master to take Matsubayashi–Ryu to the Next Step, I am sharing many of those details with you. Those little nuances are directly related to the training I received from the Master.

Book excerpt: This is the third Student Handbook & Training Journal for the World Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do Federation. Each year the WSKF will continue to update and produce this manual. Our ongoing commitment is to provide our members and affiliated dojos with the tools and reference material to better their training and understanding of Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do. One of the primary purposes for this manual is to introduce new students (be it new to karate, or new to Shorin-Ryu, or new to the WSKF), and give them some insights as to what they can expect to experience and learn while training, as well as what is expected from them as students. It is recommended that new students and parents of children just starting, read and be familiar with this manual, as it will serve as your guide to your Dojo (school) and of the WSKF. (Note: This manual has been produced for all WSKF member dojos, your specific dojo may have additional reference material they also may provide.) In assembling this manual, we included components and reference material that would be both helpful and useful for your training, and organized it in a logical and easily accessible order. As mentioned earlier, this is our first year for this manual, so your patience and understanding is appreciated as we feel our way through the process of producing a handbook worthy of our members and member dojos. We appreciate your feedback and suggestions to help us improve and make this publication more useful. This manual has four sections, each having its own specific purpose. For easy referencing, you will notice that this manual is organized into four Sections. Some parts of this manual will change yearly but most of it will remain pretty much the same, getting only minor updates.

Book excerpt: Okinawa, October 10, 1944, a six-year old boy was awakened by the deafening blasts of an aerial bombardment. Terrified, frozen with fear on all fours, he could not find his mother. During the chaos of invasion, then occupation, the family survived but was separated with one of the family members tragically lost. Miraculously, they were reunited and after the war migrated to Argentina where they lived peacefully. The young boy, Zenko Heshiki, now a grown man went to New York to study engineering but soon began studying Karate and assisted in teaching classes. In his own words: "I don't remember having a particular interest in Karate when I started." Nevertheless, in 1966 he decided to open a dojo. The more he studied, the more he read books on martial arts philosophy; however, the more he read serious texts by D.T. Suzuki, Miyamoto Musashi, and Yamaoka Tesshu, he realized that his Karate practice was lacking; something vital was missing. In 1968, anxiously, he travelled to Okinawa in search of a teacher who he found in Master Shoshin Nagamine, founder of Shorin-Ryu Matsubayashi. It was during this time that Heshiki Sensei realized what had been missing in his Karate practice: Zen, more specifically zazen (sitting meditation). Back in New York, with a renewed enthusiasm, Heshiki Sensei integrated zazen into the Karate curriculum. From this point on, and continuing for decades he trained intensely in New York, Okinawa and Hawaii where he and his family moved to in 1977. Sensei Heshiki found Chozen-ji International Zen Dojo in Honolulu, taught Karate classes, and trained under two Roshis (Zen masters), Tanouye Tenshin and Dogen Hosokawa. In the author's own words: "The reason I decided to write this book is to share my experiences of Karate-Do shugyo (forging of mind/body/spirit through zazen) with sincere practitioners of Karate throughout the world who, through the years of strict and hard physical conditioning, discovered with nagging inquest that there must be more to Karate than mere self-defense or tournament sport." With his deepening understanding of his teacher's dictum, Ken Zen Ichi Nyo (Karate and Zen as One), he gave seminars in New York, Ohio, Hawaii, Florida, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Dominican Republic. In 1993, the young terrified boy who had survived the horrors of war, relocation to a foreign country, adapting to a new culture and its language was ordained in Hawaii as a Zen priest in the Rinzai sect of Zen with the Buddhist name, Genshin Zenko. In his new role as a priest, he became even more resolute to bring Tao (Chinese), Do (Japanese) meaning Way to the world. As Master Nagamine would often say: "Karate-Do is a lifelong marathon". Sensei Heshiki's 'marathon' continues as Shihan (founder) of Chozen-ji Ryu Kempo Karate.

Book excerpt: At long last we are pleased to announce that the 3rd edition of the 1932 Motobu Choki publication, "Watashi no Karate-jutsu," is finally completed thanks only to the assistance and co-operation of many kind people. The publication is approximately 182 pages in the same size and format as our Funakoshi Gichin publication, Tanpenshu. Here, in this small but provocative publication, lies yet another milestone in the legacy of Karate. "Watashi no Karate-jutsu" ("My Art of Karate"), introduces comprehensive insights into a fighting tradition as known and taught by one of its early Okinawan innovators, Motobu Choki (1870-1944). One of only two books he ever published on the art it is not widely known in modern karate circles or outside the spectrum of those who research its history. Straightforward in its approach, this modest work outlines those unique methods that made Motobu Choki, pound for pound, possibly the greatest technician and karate fighter of his generation. One mistake the modern Karate-ka often makes, when trying to grasp the technical ambiguities surrounding the application of early karate practices, is to depend on contemporary assumption. This small but powerful book provides a window through which the reader is better able to perceive the cultural landscape and social mind-set of those people who shaped its practice. What could possibly improve a reader's overall understanding of the art more than walking in the footsteps of those people most responsible for pioneering it? Great people should never be forgotten, if only to remind us of the potential latent in ourselves. By studying the anthropology of this tradition it becomes evident that many of the early pioneers established a symbiosis with karate so that their lives became as much a product of the art as was the art a product of their lives. Researched and translated by Patrick & Yuriko McCarthy

Book excerpt: The PAKAMUT fighting system, as taught by GM Felix Roiles, was handed down to him by his humble grandfather, a true Master in the Filipino Fighting Arts. Using a very simple method, this art utilizes the body's natural movements in highly effective forms of fighting techniques with the use of impact & edged weapons, and hand-to-hand combat. PAKAMUT in Cebuano means the 'Pilipino Fighting System and Style'. It was believed that Datu Mangal, the father of Datu Lapu-lapu, was the first Pilipino hero to bring the art of fighting to the island. Datu Mangal was a direct descendant of the leaders of the powerful Sri-Visayan Empire of 13th century Malay, who conquered and colonized many lands. After the empire was taken over by the Maja Pahit Empire of ancient Sumatra and Borneo, the 10 Datu and their kinsmen settled on the island of Visayan where the art continued to be refined in to what we see today

Book excerpt: ‘Bunkai-Jutsu’ is the analysis of the karate katas and their application in real combat. It is also the title of this pioneering book by Iain Abernethy. The fighting applications of the karate katas (forms) is one of the most fascinating – and sadly misunderstood – aspects of karate practice. Bunkai-Jutsu provides the reader with the information they need to unlock the ‘secrets’ of kata and to begin practising karate as the complete and realistic combat art that it was intended to be! This groundbreaking and often controversial book provides a detailed analysis of the combative concepts and principles upon which the katas are based. 'Bunkai-Jutsu' is essential reading for all those who want to understand the real meaning of kata.
