Book excerpt: Inspired by the memoirs of Ralph M.’s experience with bullying, My Life Beyond Bullying: Stories from Mayo Clinic Patients uses 36 pages of full illustrations to tell the true story of how kids view friendships, bullying, and challenging social situations. When some kids at Alex’s new school start bullying him, he just wants to escape. He feels guilty and stressed about what’s happening. But what can he do? The challenges Alex experienced are common. Still, there are important steps you can take when you or someone you know is being bullied. Find out how Alex gets help and discovers his life beyond bullying. Children’s voices are rarely heard amid the complexity of modern medicine. That's why every story in the My Life Beyond series stems from the imagination and experience of a Mayo Clinic patient. The books were developed through collaboration between these patients, Mayo Clinic physicians and author-illustrator Hey Gee. Through this unique lens of inspiring real-life experiences, the series explores how children view illness, challenges and recovery. As kids go through adolescence, they’re likely to experience some form of bullying. Inspired by Ralph M.’s experience with bullying, Bullying: True Stories from Mayo Clinic Patients uses 40 pages of full illustrations to provide an approachable look at improving mental health and emotional happiness when facing childhood bullies. The “My Life Beyond” graphic novel book series is published in collaboration with Fondation Ipsen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious new work, Dr. Jonathan Fast proposes a new way of understanding the bullying experience (of the bully, the bullied, and the bystander), via the lens of shame. Beyond Bullying posits that shame is the powerful emotion that is often at the heart of many of the dynamics classified as bullying. Shame is a common human emotion for which Fast establishes a hierarchy of reactions. The following is an example of "healthy shame": when 5-year-old Sam finger-paints on his plate with his mashed potatoes, his mother says "you won't be allowed to eat at the grownup table until you stop sticking your fingers in your food." The shame in this scenario is healthy because it encourages Sam to master skills that will make him more autonomous and socially appealing, compared to "toxic shame" that damages one's self-concept by critiquing what one is rather than what one does. The distinction can be seen in the example of a parent whose child constantly forgets to complete her homework. The parent who says "your mother and I expect you to study and get good grades" is employing healthy shame, while the parent who shouts in frustration and anger "you're so lazy! You'll never amount to anything!" is administering a dose of toxic shame, directed at his daughter's self-concept rather than that act of neglecting her homework. "Weaponized Shame," which forms the core focus of this book, is the intentional use of those attacks on another person's self-concept for the purpose of inflicting emotional and psychological harm. The premise of the book is that all bullying involves "weaponized shame." Through the use of Shame Maps, simple iconographic diagrams similar to the genograms used by family therapists, Dr. Fast visually represents the overlapping shame dynamics in play in many common interactions, emphasizing the use of weaponized shame in bullying situations. The Shame Maps provide a useful tool for parents, teachers, therapists, school mental-health professionals, and others to use when discussing bullying with children, adolescents, and other adults. Fast traces different nuances of shame dynamics through several common types of bullying, highlighting LGBTQ, gender, and race among other bases for bullying actions, before extending the analysis to terminal acts of violence including school shootings, terrorism, homicide, and suicide. The book will both give readers concrete suggestions for healthy ways to discharge shame and equip them with techniques to help diffuse potentially harmful situations before they lead to dangerous extremes. The author is developing an interactive companion website to the book that will allow visitors to create personal shame maps based on their own scenario, to help readers employ this tool in real-world situations.

Book excerpt: Life is a journey of living and dying, of new birth, and of burying the dead. Living is a gift from above because we cannot add to its value even though we can subtract from it. Death on the other hand is a loss of life as we know it, and we can never take back from it. What I knew as my life is no longer there; in its stead, a new person emerged. The purpose that I thought was for my life no longer exists, and through my divorce, a cocoon has been broken, and the caterpillar became a butterfly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back Page I cry every day before and after school because I have been a victim of bullying for most of my life. I had the misconception that once I reached middle school that I would be free from being [a] victim. Wow! Was I wrong [!] I am now a 7th grader and the torture continues. I suffered in silence until I met Ms. Smart; I feel some level of comfort because she let us know that she does not tolerate bullying in her classroom. Like many others I tried to commit suicide by jumping out of a window of a three-story building. I am also a cutter. I want to live but how? –Seventh-grade student Unfortunately, stories like that of this middle school student are all too common. The social pressures of bullying can lead to intolerable unpleasantness for some students. Bullying in schools is a growing concern in the United States. Bullying causes many problems, not only for the victim, but also for the bully. Students desire a safe haven at home and school; however, problems with bullies lead to insecurity in the victim and make home and school feel more like a prison than the safe haven they are supposed to be. Bullying via the Internet or cyberbullying is steadily increasing. A bully can harass someone via text, email or hurtful comments on a social network site. This has led to a whole new breed of bullying. A bully no longer has to be face to face. He/she can now say harmful things about a person through the Internet for others to read and comment. No matter how it is looked at, bullying is wrong. It’s never okay. It’s never cool. It never makes one person look better than another because they are bullying someone. This book offer strategies as to what to do if one should find themselves as a victim of bullying behavior as well as if you happen to be the bully. Also covered are tips for parents, teachers and community members.

Book excerpt: I have always felt ashamed of my life, my mistakes, and my weaknesses. I hope my story will help many to reach the top of those mountains that seem to place themselves in our paths throughout life. Once at the top the love in your heart for others feels amazing. My autobiography shows my life story and how it lead me to create a legacy to help others. I was severely bullied within the workplace losing everything and becoming homeless on the street. It was when I walked aimlessly with no purpose contemplating suicide that I began to write my story that led me to writing children's books.

Human brains are social, and a student's ability to learn is deeply influenced by the quality of his or her attachment to teachers and peers. Secure attachment relationships not only ensure our overall well-being, but also optimize learning by enhancing motivation, regulating anxiety, and triggering neuroplasticity. This book presents a classroom model of secure attachment, exploring how teacher-student rapport is central to creating supportive, "tribal" classrooms and school communities.

Book excerpt: In this examination of the ubiquitous practice of bullying among youth, compelling first person stories vividly convey the lived experience of peer torment and how it impacted the lives of five diverse young women. Author Keith Berry’s own autoethnographic narratives and analysis add important relational communication, methodological, and ethical dimensions to their accounts. The personal stories create an opening to understand how this form of physical and verbal violence shapes identities, relationships, communication, and the construction of meaning among a variety of youth. The layered narrative describes the practices constituting bullying and how youth work to cope with peer torment and its aftermath, largely focusing on identity construction and well being; addresses contemporary cyberbullying as well as other forms of relational aggression in many social contexts across race, gender, and sexual orientations; is written in a compelling way to be accessible to students in communication, education, psychology, social welfare, and other fields.

We are all part of a system, one that, at times, does not work to our advantage. It's time to open all our minds, go to sleep and listen to our dreams, learning through the night. Politics, bullies, wars, guns, famine and popups, the world needs none of that, but it does need you. This is a story about my life, my eight-year journey through a broken system, a citizen to a government who ignored me. I stopped playing and started working, only to find myself abused by my superiors. I developed epilepsy, which led to either a mental breakdown or a spiritual awakening. Life's like a movie, write your own ending, keep believing and keep pretending, that's what I've always set out to do.

While there will be some references to my history, the vast majority of what you will read is about how bullies function, how to get them out of your life, and, if you've been traumatized, how to remove the trauma with TimeLine Therapy, anchoring and belief changes. For addtional information, visit my blog at http: //LifeAfterBullying.net or on my YouTube channel at: https: //www.youtube.com/channel/UCdyYC_IWzXuSRkFM2wZdhNA Here are some of the main topics of this book: - Bullying and Crazy Making Behavior - 10 Facts About the Bully Mindset - Long-term Effects of Bullying - 3 Actionable Strategies to End Adult Bullying - How to Deal with Bullying on Forums - Why It's Important to Expose Bullies - How Bullies Target Their Victims - 5 Ways to Protect Yourself Online - Protecting Your Internet Privacy - How Boundary Violations Can Cause Suffering - The Challenge of Enforcing Boundaries - The Importance of Defining Your Personal Space - How to Set Boundaries with Family Bullies - When it's Time to Sever the Ties - 3 Steps to Effective Workplace Boundaries - Relationship Breakups: How to Get Over Anyone in a Few Days - The Myth of the Sacred Family Bond - 5 Facts About Abusive Relationships - How Automatic Thoughts Can Cause Suffering - How to Recover from the Effects of Bullying Faster Than You Ever Dreamed Possible with TimeLine Therapy The chapter on TimeLine therapy is of crucial importance. Before that session, I thought I would suffer from the effects of bullying for the rest of my life. The TimeLine Therapy released the bulk of the trauma from my life. When working back and forth with my coach, I discovered an important fact, which the incidences of bullying, while painful, were not the problem. The problem was the ongoing story in my head, the never-ending war against the bullies, which is what was causing me the most pain. TimeLine Therapy dissolved that story and the drama that went with it. The change was so fast that I'd become a different person before I even knew what had happened. The result was that most of the effects of bullying dissolved from my life. To this day, I still feel the effects and what's left over continues to dissolve. It can work for you, too.
