Book excerpt: The Cars in My Life, first published in 1963, was authored by car manufacturer Walter Owen ("W. O.") Bentley (1888-1971). Considered by many to be Britain's most distinguished car designer, he founded Bentley Motors in 1919, and led the marque to multiple victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After selling his namesake company to Rolls-Royce Limited in 1931, he was employed as a designer for Lagonda, Aston Martin, and Armstrong Siddeley. Bentley was especially noted for his designs of high performance motors, such as the 3 liter Bentley and V12 Lagonda. As Bentley writes: "The Cars in My Life is a book of theories and opinions, a hotch-potch of ideas on motor cars, motoring and the motor industry. I also say something about the cars I have known, some of the cars for which I have been responsible, and even some of the cars which never came to anything. Stirred into the stew as spice, are a few theories on the principle of motor car design and something about the people I have known in the world of motoring."

Book excerpt: James Murray recounts nine days spent in the remote and beautiful landscapes of the Northern Territory, yet this is much more than a book about bushwalking. A delicate hymn to the wilderness of Northern Australia, My Life in the Sea of Cars: A Letter from Arnhem Land is a journey of personal exploration and self discovery, and a passionate argument for a new way of living. The ways in which rampant consumerism, and an obsession with the motor car have become so entrenched in people's lives is explored through relationships, memory, culture, identity and the meditative act of walking. When Murray candidly reveals his own family secrets and likely ancestry his book takes on yet another dimension. Totally original, and heartbreakingly honest, Murray asks us the difficult, awkward questions that will not go away. Where has our culture gone so wrong?

But when that special day arrived to have one of his very own, Brian never dreamed he would befriend so many; each with its own personality and bearing a curious, sometimes heart-wrenching story. To some people, their automobiles are more than mere transportation, and unshakeable bond of friendship forms between them. And although a day may come when each will go their separate ways, this friendship will remain forever. In Cars, Cars, Cars: The Vehicles that Drove My Life, author Brian LaForest shares sixty-six personal stories of this kind of friendship. From tragedy to triumph and back again, the reader is along on a fascinating ride through each vehicle's story; from his first old-jalopy, to his most recent prize. But along this road too, in the middle of the journey, there is an even greater story being told. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: My Life and Work is a classic autobiography of the great American business mogul, Henry Ford. Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 - April 7, 1947) was an American industrialist, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, and sponsor of the development of the assembly line technique of mass production. Although Ford did not invent the automobile or the assembly line, he developed and manufactured the first automobile that many middle class Americans could afford. This is his story in his own words. Although Ford did not invent the automobile or the assembly line, [1] he developed and manufactured the first automobile that many middle-class Americans could afford. In doing so, Ford converted the automobile from an expensive curiosity into a practical conveyance that would profoundly impact the landscape of the 20th century. His introduction of the Model T automobile revolutionized transportation and American industry. As the owner of the Ford Motor Company, he became one of the richest and best-known people in the world. He is credited with "Fordism" mass production of inexpensive goods coupled with high wages for workers. Ford had a global vision, with consumerism as the key to peace. His intense commitment to systematically lowering costs resulted in many technical and business innovations, including a franchise system that put dealerships throughout most of North America and in major cities on six continents. Ford left most of his vast wealth to the Ford Foundation and arranged for his family to control the company permanently. Ford was also widely known for his pacifism during the first years of World War I, and for promoting antisemitic content, including The Protocols of the Elders of Zion through his newspaper The Dearborn Independent and the book The International Jew. Henry Ford was born July 30, 1863, on a farm in Greenfield Township, Michigan.[2] His father, William Ford (1826-1905), was born in County Cork, Ireland, to a family that was originally from Somerset, England.[3] His mother, Mary Ford (née Litogot; 1839-1876), was born in Michigan as the youngest child of Belgian immigrants; her parents died when she was a child and she was adopted by neighbors, the O'Herns. Henry Ford's siblings were Margaret Ford (1867-1938); Jane Ford (c. 1868-1945); William Ford (1871-1917) and Robert Ford (1873-1934). His father gave him a pocket watch in his early teens. At 15, Ford dismantled and reassembled the timepieces of friends and neighbors dozens of times, gaining the reputation of a watch repairman.[4] At twenty, Ford walked four miles to their Episcopal church every Sunday.[5] Ford was devastated when his mother died in 1876. His father expected him to eventually take over the family farm, but he despised farm work. He later wrote, "I never had any particular love for the farm--it was the mother on the farm I loved."[6] In 1879, Ford left home to work as an apprentice machinist in Detroit, first with James F. Flower & Bros., and later with the Detroit Dry Dock Co. In 1882, he returned to Dearborn to work on the family farm, where he became adept at operating the Westinghouse portable steam engine. He was later hired by Westinghouse to service their steam engines. During this period Ford also studied bookkeeping at Goldsmith, Bryant & Stratton Business College in Detroit.

If these vehicles could talk, what would they say? This is not a book about throbbing exhausts, roaring engines, and spinning hubcaps. Rather, it's about one guy's journey with hot wheels, hot ladies, and a hot career in journalism, movies, PR, and marketing during the wild sixties, seventies, and beyond-a rollicking adventure told car by car. Author Brian Cowley goes from his first encounter with sex to orgies in Mayfair, encounters what may be a body in the boot and unenthusiastically gets married, carried through a wild life by his many vehicles. Through fascinating stories illustrated with pictures of classic roadsters, readers ride along with Brian Cowley as he remembers his former loves and automobiles. This is a driver's side view into the swinging '60s, the go-go '70s, and beyond. Whether you come to love or hate him, you'll enjoy the ride-just like he did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduated High School in 1971, three months pregnant. I left my mothers house with my Fianc. The only thing I took with me were the clothes on my back, the things I read in books, the things my Grandmother taught me which mainly involved cooking and cleaning, the Bible quotes and old folks tales my Grandmother used to say over and over, the few things my mother taught me during her brief and few periods of time into my life, and also a very special gift from God, which was the ability to play any musical instrument I chose to play. I thought I was grown and knew everything. What I didn't know was although I was very smart, I was also very naive. I got married in 1972 and had another baby in 1974. I worked for a police department from 1977 to 1985. I was in the Army National Guard from 1979 to 1985. So many unbelievable things happened to me during that time, both good and bad. So many more bad things happened than good that I started to think my life was cursed for some reason. It started to happen so much that finally I did not want to live any longer.

Harden and how he survived being shot at as a child because his mother was one of the first female union presidents, and again later in life in a second attempt against him by a mad woman. It tells of his living in the forest in a Girl Scout camp as a child, then later living with people like the president of a European country, then becoming a merchant marine officer sailing in the oceans, dropping bombs from helicopters on secret targets, and helping the communist empire to fall. All these are part of his biography and life. He also built the first US satellites that went into space, and he secretly put his autographs inside so they would be there two thousand years later for someone to see and wonder about when the first US spacecraft will finally fall to Earth.

Book excerpt: Meet Vanessa, an almost thirty-something New Yorker who thinks she's got it all: marriage-material boyfriend Ethan, her own bilingual preschool, a closet full of designer fashions, and daily diner dates with her best friend Emily. But when Ethan doesn't turn out to be all he's supposed to be, Vanessa's world instantly unravels. Suddenly single, she stumbles upon a wealthy man and moves to Palm Beach to marry him, only to find the shocking truth behind the source of his wealth. Is having everything worth sacrificing who you really are? But what about the Shoe Salon at Bergdorf's? The Louboutin collection? Vanessa finds herself at a crossroads, and the choices she makes might surprise everyone-even herself. Witty, insightful, and eminently relatable, Erica Negi's story is a modern twist on the Cinderella tale-albeit in designer shoes. Reminiscent of the works of Jennifer Weiner and Candace Bushnell, My Life in Loubies is one woman's uproarious journey to adulthood.

The old, rambling farmhouse has withstood the test of time with her family, but now Kate's parents have decided to sell it from under her feet. The preventative solution: sabotage the realtor's tours with the help of best friends and a plan that has maximum stinkage potential. The back-up plan: hang on to at least a little bit of life at Big Red by creating shoebox dioramas of each room. But even with a full-scale assault, will her mission be a success? And if not, what will the diorama of Kate's future look like? With a keen eye for capturing the moments that matter, acclaimed author Tara Altebrando explores the pain-and promise-of letting go.
