Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Kingdom for a Guitar is a novel based on the remarkable life of Cameroonian-born writer and musician Francis Bebey. Born in Douala, Cameroon, Bebey studied in Paris and New York. He found fame when his first novel, Le Fils d'Agatha Moudio (Agatha Moudio's Son), was published in 1967, and that fame continued to grow with the release of his first album in 1969. He would go on to become one of the best-known singer-songwriters of Africa, whose groundbreaking style merged Cameroonian makossa with classical guitar, jazz, and pop. Narrated by Bebey's daughter, Kidi, My Kingdom for a Guitar is a tribute to her late father and his family. Through a combination of recollections and fiction, it offers the reader a chance to witness the admiration of a daughter for her father and the love of a man for his music.

Book excerpt: Here Is My Kingdom: Hispanic-American Literature and Art for Young People is a vital and colorful anthology - the first of its kind - that illuminates the many facets of the Hispanic-American experience. To capture the spirit, vitality, and diversity of the Hispanic heritage, Here Is My Kingdom covers a broad spectrum of cultures and origins and spans history from Columbus and Cortes to Cesar Chavez. Through the poems, texts, and illustrations the reader can explore many kingdoms: Spain and Portugal; the Mayas and Aztecs; the kingdom of God; the mythical kingdom of Aztlan, said by some to have existed where New Mexico and Arizona are today. The text and art - by classic, well-known, and even relatively new writers and artists - are brilliantly selected from a vast and rich literary and historical tradition. The art and literature work together here to convey remarkable images of beauty and endurance and feelings of strength and pride. Frida Kahlo's painting Roots accompanies words from the poem "The Roots" by Hugo Salazar Tamariz. A traditional folk rhyme is paired with colorful Mexican folk art. Wifredo Lam's The Jungle appears with "Give Me Back My World" by Rita Geada. The elegant, accessible design and beautifully reproduced illustrations of Here Is My Kingdom let the reader enjoy paintings, folk art, murals, wood-block prints, cave drawing, ancient and contemporary sculpture, and photographs that enhance songs, poems, and proverbs, and excerpts from short stories, essays, novels, and speeches. Biographical notes give background information on all the artists and writers, including places where more of their work can be found. The book's foreword is by Luis R. Cancel, Commissionerof Cultural Affairs in New York City and former Executive Director of the Bronx Museum of the Arts. He gives insight into the complex question of Hispanic-American identity and tells the reader to "remember that the oral and literary traditions of your family, neighbors, and community can help you to define and celebrate your own unique identity". Celebrating pride in the past and faith in the future, Here Is My Kingdom will inspire everyone, young readers especially, to discover their potential and make their own contribution to the American heritage.

Book excerpt: Daniel, a British soldier, has completed a deployment into India's North Western Frontier in the spring of 1914. He returns to London and the Army Reserves. Daniel embraces a new life and career with his family ... until Britain declares war. Daniel reports for duty and arrives in France with the British Expeditionary Force while the conflict is still a mobile war. During the retreat from Mons, Daniel's battalion receives orders to go into action. The Irish are eager, but the German Hammer appears unstoppable. Although a small French village will become synonymous with his regiment's valour, Daniel's wife, Mary, and sons Steven and David are in the dark without word of their loved one's fate. Finally, The Times publishes The Honour Roll. Daniel's name is among the columns of those listed as Missing. One uncertain word changes their lives forever. This stirring epic chronicles the courage of a soldier and his family through the entire tragedy that becomes World War 1. From the home front and its hospital wards, to the battle front and beyond, if you read only one book to commemorate the Great War's centennial, let it be My Kingdom. Based on a true story.

Book excerpt: Throughout history, many Christians have embraced a vision of God’s kingdom that encourages active participation in, influencing and transforming the world around them. Was this vision shared by the New Testament writers or the earliest Christians? To find out, we must delve into the Biblical narrative concerning the kingdom of God and its relationship to the present world. My Kingdom is Not of This World develops a Biblical theology of God’s kingdom and its cosmic struggle against a kingdom of darkness. It explores the Bible’s cosmology and the unfolding narrative of this conflict throughout the Bible. Delving into this narrative reveals a recurring theme of sinful humanity - collusion with cosmic darkness to build an earthly utopian kingdom instead of awaiting God’s heavenly kingdom. Understanding the Biblical vision of God’s kingdom and the nature of this present world is of utmost importance. It has profound implications for the Christian life and our interactions with the world.

Book excerpt: To a Mormon, happiness may be Family Home Evening, and families may be forever, but becoming an actual god is the ultimate goal of every member of the church. Mormons believe the reason for coming to earth from the planet near the great star Kolob is to gain bodies for our spirit beings and to be tested. To become gods, they need to be Mormons, to go through the temple to learn the signs and tokens for entry to the celestial glory and to be obedient unto death to the holy prophet. Everything else is tied to, and wraps around, this one goal. Today, Mormon Mitt Romney is a major candidate for the White House, A man who would be god. An entire chapter is devoted to the Mormon Plan for America and the rise of Mitt Romney. It is a warning and a must read for every Christian.

In 1558, on her Catholic sister Mary's death, she ascended the throne and reigned for 45 years. Loved and respected by her subjects and idolised by future generations, Gloriana's fierce devotion to her country and its people made her England's fairest queen and icon. Royal marriage in the age of Elizabeth was a political business. Unions between great familes could be the key to security at home and to the making of great empires. No one represented a better prize than Elizabeth. She encouraged attention and spent her life surrounded by suitors, but she remained, until the end, married only to her kingdom. This, the third volume of Alison Plowden's Elizabethan quartet, plots the true story of the Virgin Queen's courtships and her career as "the greatest tease in history".

Book excerpt: The memoir of the female aviator who became Hitler’s favorite pilot. The Sky My Kingdom is the fascinating autobiography of the famous World War II test pilot Hanna Reitsch. As the war progressed, Reitsch was invited to fly many of Germany’s latest—and increasingly desperate—designs, including the rocket-propelled Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet and several larger bombers, on which she tested various mechanisms for cutting barrage balloon cables. After crashing on her fifth Me 163 flight, she was badly injured but insisted on writing her report before falling unconscious and spending five months in the hospital. Eventually, she became Adolf Hitler’s favorite pilot. Reitsch was one of only two women awarded the Iron Cross First Class during World War II, and the only woman awarded the Luftwaffe Combined Pilot and Observer Badge with Diamonds. She survived many accidents and was badly injured several times. In the last days of the war, Reitsch was asked to fly her companion, Col. Gen. Robert Ritter von Greim, into Berlin to meet with Hitler. The city was already surrounded by Red Army troops, who had made significant progress into the downtown area when they arrived, landing on a city street and traveling to the Führerbunker. The aircraft she used was the justly famous Fieseler Storch, already well known for the exploit that rescued Mussolini, only adding to the legend of both Reitsch and that aircraft. She is said to have overheard Hitler laying out plans for Nazi commanders to join together in mass suicide when it was obvious that the war was over. She also hoped to fly out propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels’ six children, who had been staying in the bunker since April 22 with their parents, but neither Joseph nor Magda Goebbels would allow it. She managed to escape Berlin herself, on April 29, by flying out through heavy Russian antiaircraft fire. She was a devoted and idealistic Nazi who adored Adolf Hitler and refused to believe the reports of concentration camps and torture. Not until much later would she say that she had been “disgusted” by what she witnessed in the Third Reich. She was held for eighteen months by the American military after the war, interrogated, and subsequently released—ultimately to become a champion glider pilot, as gliders were the only craft German citizens were allowed to fly. Hers is a story that arguably stands as unique in the great drama of World War II.

Book excerpt: In the first meeting of the Relief Society, Sister Emma Smith said, “We are going to do something extraordinary.” She was right. The history of Relief Society is filled with examples of ordinary women who have accomplished extraordinary things as they have exercised faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Relief Society was established to help prepare daughters of God for the blessings of eternal life. The purposes of Relief Society are to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and provide relief by seeking out and helping those in need. Women fulfill these purposes as they seek, receive, and act on personal revelation in their callings and in their personal lives. This book is not a chronological history, nor is it an attempt to provide a comprehensive view of all that the Relief Society has accomplished. Instead, it provides a historical view of the grand scope of the work of the Relief Society. Through historical accounts, personal experiences, scriptures, and words of latter-day prophets and Relief Society leaders, this book teaches about the responsibilities and opportunities Latter-day Saint women are given in Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness.

Book excerpt: From William Shakespeare's series of history dramas to Sir Walter Scott and George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, not to mention the smash-hit TV show Game of Thrones, the British civil war of 1455 to 1485 has inspired writers more than any other. Ed West's My Kingdom for a Horse illuminates the bloody war fought for thirty long years between the descendants of King Edward III in a battle for the throne. Named after the emblems used by the two leading families, the Houses of York and Lancaster, the title of the conflict gives it a romantic feel that probably wasn't as apparent to those on the battlefield having swords shoved into their eyes. And, for all the lovely heraldry and glamorous costumes of the era, the war saw the complete breakdown of the medieval code of chivalry in which prisoners were spared, which makes it even better drama. In 1460-61 alone, twelve noblemen were killed in the field and six were beheaded off it, removing a third of the English peerage. Written in the spirit of a black comedy, My Kingdom for a Horse is an ideal introduction for anyone interested in one of history's most insane wars. Featuring some of history's most infamous figures, including the insane King Henry VI, whose madness triggered the breakdown, and the wicked Richard III, who murdered his young nephews to take the throne, this fifth entry in West's A Very, Very Short History of England series is a must for fans of British history.
