Book excerpt: Moving, thrilling, inspirational: the autobiography of Jim Stynes. In July 2009, Jim Stynes was diagnosed with cancer and given less than a year to live. The diagnosis caught him by surprise - he was 42, healthy, fit - and he didn't have time for illness: he was director of a foundation for young people, president of Melbourne Football Club, father of two primary school-aged kids, husband of Sam. Knowing his odds weren't good, but with so much to lose, Jim put everything he had into trying to beat the disease. He was well equipped to beat the odds - he'd been getting the most out of himself in every aspect of life since his childhood in Dublin. Jim's ability to use mind over matter and his will to succeed gave him two extra years on the prognosis. He had more than 25 tumours removed from his brain and stomach, and defied expectations time and time again. This book is Jim's legacy. Unflinching in its detail, Jim talks about what he found out about himself when things were at their worst - about what really counts when you're stacking it all up. It's a moving, inspiring story of a life lived fearlessly. 'Remarkable' Brent Pope, Irish Independent 'Enormously moving' Sunday Independent 'A moving, inspiring story of a life lived fearlessly. A superb read from start to finish' Evening Echo 'A great story, well told, and you'll do well not to cry while reading certain chapters' Sunday World

Book excerpt: A deeply moving recasting of one of the most controversial characters in American literature, Huckleberry Finn’s Jim Written in the great literary tradition of novels of American slavery, My Jim is told in the incantatory voice of Sadie Watson, an ex-slave who schools her granddaughter with lessons of love she learned in bondage. To help her granddaughter confront the decisions she needs to make, Sadie mines her memory for the tale of the unquenchable love of her life, Jim. Sadie’s Jim was an ambitious young slave and seer who, when faced with the prospect of being sold, escaped down the Mississippi with a white boy named Huck. Sadie is suddenly left alone. Worried about her children, convinced her husband is dead, reviled as a witch, and punished for Jim’s escape, Sadie’s will and her love for Jim, even in absentia, animate her life and see her through. Told with spare eloquence and mirroring the true stories of countless slave women, My Jim re-creates one of the most controversial characters in American literature. A nuanced critique of the great American novel, My Jim stands on its own as a haunting and inspiring story about freedom, longing, and the remarkable endurance of love.

He will meet the waitress Maggie at a coffee shop in Battle Mountain located in mid-Northern Nevada. She will introduce Arthur to a man who lives in Spirit Valley south of town. Mr. Greyson will soon, after a cordial meeting with Arthur, send to his address in Reno a box with a letter inside. The box contains an old twenty-four-channel CB radio. The letter from Mr. Greyson tells Arthur that the stories he told him of meeting the people at the mines and towns during the years 18801905 did happen, for he was there! He can, with the CB radio in Spirit Valley, go back in time meeting the people who lived and worked in the gold and silver mines and towns. The twenty-four-channel radio will allow one to go through the small door in the woodshed back to the years in the past to twenty-four different locations and pastimes in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Giving the property to Maggie, a future love interest develops between Arthur and Maggie. This romance from the future and in the valley will transcend back and forth into the past. A ferryboat journey up the Colorado River in the year 1890 has many events almost ending into a life or death situation. Maggie and Arthur will meet Mr. Greyson, who has relocated back in time to Jarbidge, a mining town in Northern Nevada. Arthur will visit gold mines and will witness the extreme hardships and dangers to the workers using the stone crushers and inside the mine shafts deep in the mountains. During a time-travel visit to Searchlight, a town along the Colorado River, Maggie and Arthur are pushed into a life or death situation. Two men from the future find a way to venture back to the same location through the door in Spirit Valley. These men are hunters and a threat to the survival of the people in the old time period due to the modern weapons and unknown consequences. Arthur makes a life or death decision on what he must do. This decision puts a tremendous mental strain on his relationship with Maggie. Spirit Valley, over the many years, is a sacred valley where the past and present Indian spirits live. Joe White Feather, a spirit man of the local Shoshone Indians, becomes close friends with Maggie and Arthur, who eventually settle in the valley. As a spirit man, he is a strong force in the lives and events that Arthur and Maggie have to endure now in the future and the past.
