Who can describe the novelty of the situation or picture the shifting scenes of the highly colored panorama! All within bustling and busy; all without unchangeable and tireless. Our steward says the sea is so smooth that he scarcely knows the ship is moving. But far other wise does it seem to me. We started out on one of the most glorious mornings I have ever known; the sun shining in its strength, the ocean a sapphire sea covered with a thousand snowy crests, laugh ing and leaping with delight. Now up, now down, our good ship rears and plunges, a splendid witness to the skill of man and the overruling Hand of God. We have one hundred and eighty-four saloon passengers, and with the sailors, waiters, officers, &c., I judge we do not carry more than two hun dred and fifty souls. We have spent the entire day on deck and taken a good deal of exercise, so that by this time (9 P. M.) everyone is pretty well played out, and all seem to be lounging around in durance vile, as the evening hours wear away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traveling School of Seven Abroad: Study, Work and Pleasure in Foreign Lands; The Rewritten Diary of an American Student and Sightseer In offering this book to the public, I would say that it is the first I have ever written. It is in narrative form the record of the travels of a class of boys through Europe, visiting a large number of places not usually included in the itinerary of American tourists. That was a trip I wish every boy could take; to us it was full of new and novel interest from start to finish. I hope that every reader of my book will find something of interest, and perhaps profit, in it, and if this hope is realized I shall be satisfied with the effort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Months in Foreign Lands When we left for our Mediterranean cruise, January 30, 1905, I had no idea of writing notes or publishing them. However, on the trip we found so many scenes of interest that are very different from what is seen in this country, or the well traveled paths of the ordinary European tourist, that I decided to write some discriptive letters of our journey to my daughter and her husband, Mr. And Mrs. Chas. B. Farish, and to my partner, Mr. Joshua Motter, with whom I have been closely associated in the whole sale dry goods trade for the past thirty years. After our return, I had these letters type-written and gave a few copies to my friends. Many of them said they were interesting and instructive and urged me to have the notes pub lished in book form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunny Memories of Foreign Lands, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated From Designs by Hammatt Billings If there be characters and scenes that seem drawn with too bright a pencil, the reader will consider that, after all, there are many worse sins than a disposition to think and speak well of one's neighbors. To admire and to love may now and then be tolerated, as a variety, as well as to carp and criticize. America and England have heretofore abounded towards each other in illiberal criticisms. There is not an unfavorable aspect of things in the old world which has not become perfectly familiar to us; and a little of the other side may have a useful influence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Note-Book and Camera: A Winter Journey in Foreign Lands We know that this effort will fail, and that jesus must reign till He hath put all enemies under His feet' but the struggle will be a fierce one, and it may be prolonged. What will most contribute to a speedy victory for the truth? One thing, and one only - the manifestation of the Lord jesus Christ in His love and in His power. And this manifestation must be by means of His servants, whether missionaries or others, old or young. For that let us all pray, and, as this little book reminds us in the last chapter, let us realize that we have a part in Christ's work. If He is manifested in our lives, we are His missionaries, though we may never visit heathen lands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did British colonists in Victorian Montreal come to think of themselves as “native Canadian”? This richly illustrated work reveals that colonists adopted, then appropriated, Aboriginal and French Canadian activities such as hunting, lacrosse, snowshoeing, and tobogganing. In the process, they constructed visual icons that were recognized at home and abroad as distinctly “Canadian.” This new Canadian nationality mimicked indigenous characteristics but ultimately rejected indigenous players, and championed the interests of white, middle-class, Protestant males who used their newly acquired identity to dominate the political realm. English Canadian identity was not formed solely by emulating what was British; this book shows that it gained ground by usurping what was indigenous in a foreign land.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Years Wild Sports in Foreign: Lands or Travels in the Eighties The exploration or adventure, which I have included in this volume of my travels, will at least serve the purpose of comparing the different countries described from a sporting point of view, from the fact of their having been the experience of a single individual, within the short period of a decade, and partly in the intervals of a military service which included a campaign. If from a literary point of view the chapters appear to be of varying, and I hope increas ing merit, that fact must be ascribed to the different epochs at which they were written. Some have been condensed from my contributions to certain periodicals with the kind permission of the Editors, such as those of Land and Water, Tile Alpine Journal, and The Field. I can at least claim for them the advantage of strict fidelity to fact, and of having been mostly penned upon the spot.
