Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered about those recreational vehicles going down the highway? Would you ever want to live in one? Why would anyone ever want to live that way? This book answers the many questions that Barbara receives whenever someone finds out that she is traveling alone in an RV and is almost 70 years old. It covers how Barbara began, what she considered when buying an RV, the difference in the aspects of her life style and some of her experiences. She spends about three months in a location (usually a national site) working in exchange for her campsite. If you have ever considered living in an RV then this book will answer many questions. If you have no intention of ever living this way, maybe you will enjoy hearing why Barbara feels that it is a wonderful way to live, although maybe not your choice of a life style. After her divorce in the early 1980s, Barbara began extensive foreign and domestic travel. She has been to six continents and many, many countries. She has hiked and bicycled abroad as well as taken bus trips, riverboats trips and cruises. When Barbara was 65 years old she sold her house and almost all her belongings and began to live in a recreational vehicle. She was born in 1942 and feels that her early adult life was greatly affected by the norms of the 1950s. She was married at age eighteen and years later began college. Barbara has three children: David, born in 1965; Pamela, born in 1969; and Kimberly, born in 1970. After her children were in school she began her career in education. Barbara taught all grades (except kindergarten) in an elementary school, then all grades in a middle school, then worked as a middle school counselor, then finished her career as a high school counselor. Her marriage ended in 1984 and since then she has traveled extensively and lived in many states. Barbara believes that she is continuing to evolve into someone who accepts challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some military brats rode camels in Arabia . . . others leaped from parachute training towers . . . but this little army brat rode backwards in the rear "jump-seat" of the family station wagon all the way across America . . . without a seatbelt! Christine Kriha Kastner grew up the only way she knew-on military bases stateside and around the world. By the time she turned in her military I.D. card, when her father retired from the U.S. Army, she had lived in fifteen different houses and attended ten different schools. Situation normal for an army brat. Living on Okinawa was a memorable overseas assignment. So when an opportunity to return to that little island in the Pacific Ocean arose after forty years, she couldn't pass it up. Kastner returned to the island she remembered from her youth-with the 73-year-old mother of one of her best friends. Together, they took a Kubasaki High School reunion trip timed to coincide with the 4th Uchinanchu Festival that brought thousands of Okinawans back to the island from all over the world. It was the adventure of their lifetimes, just not quite the karaoke, sake and pachinko experience they expected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louie Giglio helps you find encouragement, hope, and strength in the midst of any valley as you reject the enemy voices of fear, rage, lust, insecurity, anxiety, despair, temptation, or defeat. Scripture is clear: the Enemy is a liar who will stop at nothing to tempt you into poor decisions and self-defeating mindsets, making you feel afraid, angry, anxious, or defeated. It is all too easy for Satan to weasel his way into a seat at the table intended for only you and your King. But you can fight back. Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table outlines the ways to overcome those lies so you can find peace and security in any challenging circumstance or situation. With the same bold, exciting approach to Scripture as employed in Goliath Must Fall and his other previous works, pastor Louie Giglio examines Psalm 23 in fresh ways, highlighting verse 5: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." You can find freedom from insecurity, temptation, and defeat--if you allow Jesus, the Shepherd, to lead the battle for your mind and heart. This spiritual warfare book for those who are leery of spiritual warfare books will resonate with Louie's core Passion tribe as well as with Christians of all ages who want to live a triumphant life in God.

Book excerpt: From the American Battlefield Trust, the collection of their popular battle maps of the Western Theater of the American Civil War. “I just love those maps that you guys send to me.” It is a phrase that the staff of the American Battlefield Trust hears on a weekly basis and the expression refers to one of the cornerstone initiatives of the organization, mapping the battlefields of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the American Civil War. The American Battlefield Trust is the premier battlefield preservation organization in the United States. Over the last thirty years the American Battlefield Trust and its members have preserved more than 52,000 acres of battlefield land across 143 battlefields, in 24 states—at sites such as Lexington & Concord, Vicksburg, Yorktown, Shiloh, and Gettysburg. Other than physically walking across the hallowed battle grounds that the American Battlefield Trust has saved, the best way to illustrate the importance of the properties that we have preserved is through our battle maps. Through the decades, the American Battlefield Trust has created hundreds of maps detailing the action at major battles. Now, for the first time in book form, we have collected the maps of some of the most iconic battles of the Western Theater of the Civil War into one volume. In Vol. 2 of our Battle Maps of the Civil War Series, you can follow the course of the war from Fort Sumter to the Surrender at Bennett Place. Study the major actions of the Western Theater from start to finish utilizing this unparalleled collection of maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a woman and events forgotten by history, bestselling author Susan Holloway Scott weaves together carefully researched fact and fiction to tell the story of Mary Emmons, and the place she held in the life—and the heart—of the notorious Aaron Burr. He was a hero of the Revolution, a brilliant politician, lawyer, and very nearly president; a skillful survivor in a raw new country filled with constantly shifting loyalties. Today Aaron Burr is remembered more for the fatal duel that killed rival Alexander Hamilton. But long before that single shot destroyed Burr’s political career, there were other dark whispers about him: that he was untrustworthy, a libertine, a man unafraid of claiming whatever he believed should be his. Sold into slavery as a child in India, Mary Emmons was brought to an America torn by war. Toughened by the experiences of her young life, Mary is intelligent, resourceful, and strong. She quickly gains the trust of her new mistress, Theodosia Prevost, and becomes indispensable in a complicated household filled with intrigue—especially when the now-widowed Theodosia marries Colonel Aaron Burr. As Theodosia sickens with the fatal disease that will finally kill her, Mary and Burr are drawn together into a private world of power and passion, and a secret, tangled union that would have shocked the nation . . . Praise for I, Eliza Hamilton “Scott’s devotion to research is evident . . . a rewarding take on a fascinating historical couple.” —Library Journal “Readers will be captivated.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Packed with political and historical as well as domestic details.” —Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering equity issues of sex, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability, this work presents creative, nontraditional narratives about performing social justice work, acknowledging the contributions of previous generations, describing current challenges, and appealing to readers to join the struggle toward a better world. Many would like to believe we are living as "post-racial" America, long past the days of discrimination and marginalization of people simply due to their race and minority status. However, editor Jennifer L. Martin and a breadth of expert contributors show that prejudice and discrimination are still very much alive in the United States. Sharing personal stories of challenges, aggressions, retaliations, and finally racial battle fatigue, these activists, practitioners, and scholars explain how they have been attacked—in subtle, shrouded, and sometimes outright ways—simply for whom and what they advocate: social justice. The stories within consist of discussions on the interconnections among equity issues: sex, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability. Furthermore, the work relates current events such as the banning of ethnic studies in Arizona and the shooting of Trayvon Martin to the battle for social justice. Other topics addressed include the ongoing problems of white supremacist beliefs, the challenges of teaching about the racist thinking that permeates our media and popular culture, and the harms of aggressions faced by minorities and those possessing multiple minority status. The unique narratives presented in this single-volume work combine the various approaches to answering questions about not only the necessity of fighting for social justice but also the impact of the struggle on its champions.

He writes with conviction that restoration of this long-neglected aspect of the gospel ministry is more needed now than ever-a need which will become even greater as we draw nearer to the second Advent of Christ. "Souls possessed with evil spirits will present themselves before us. We must cultivate the spirit of earnest prayer, mingled with genuine faith to save them from ruin, and this will confirm our faith. God designs that the sick, the unfortunate, those possessed with evil spirits shall hear His voice through us."
