Book Synopsis The Diary of a Mad Chef by : Daniel DellaVecchia
Download or read book The Diary of a Mad Chef written by Daniel DellaVecchia and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This family cookbook morphed into much more for me during the writing process. It began by contacting friends and family to collect recipes for what I thought would be a simple process. During those conversations and with my own memories, a flood of personal history evolved in my mind. What began as a repository of food recipes became much more to me, and I decided to collect the process in the form of this book, The Diary of a Mad Chef, to also include photos of those people and selected short stories. Food has always been the center of our familys common narrative thread, and I attempted to place the face and the stories of my friends and family with the recipes as I remember them. Along with the feedback and photos from my friends and family, it became a two-year-long effort to compile, edit, and publish this book. The journey has been a magnificent experience for me, and I am grateful to have had the time and opportunity to write this book.

Book Synopsis The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman by : John Henry Newman
Download or read book The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman written by John Henry Newman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman (1801-90) was brought up in the Church of England in the Evangelical tradition. An Oxford graduate and Fellow of Oriel College, he was appointed Vicar of St Mary's Oxford in 1828; from 1839 onwards he began to have doubts about the claims of the Anglican Church and in 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal in 1879. His influence on both the restoration of Roman Catholicism in England and the advance of Catholic ideas in the Church of England was profound. Volume VIII covers a turbulent period in Newman's life with the publication of Tract 90. His attempt to show the compatibility of the 39 Articles with Catholic doctrine caused a storm both in the University of Oxford and in the Church. He and others were horrified by the establishment of a joint Anglo-Prussian Bishopric in Jerusalem, considering it an attempt to give Apostolical succession to an heretical church. In 1842 he moved away from the hubbub of Oxford life to nearby Littlemore.

Book Synopsis Someone Else's Child by : Sue Phillips
Download or read book Someone Else's Child written by Sue Phillips and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a summer morning in Canberra, Sue Phillips gave birth for the fourth time. Sue's husband was by her side, along with Lily, the baby's genetic mother. Labor was brief, but excruciating; and only minutes afterwards, Sue wrapped the newborn in a blanket and handed her over to Lily. What does it take to carry someone else's child? What does it feel like to give her up? Motivated by a strong desire to help, Sue first approached Lily after hearing about her health problems from a mutual friend. Facing a childless future, Lily and her husband were ecstatic, but Sue's surrogacy commitment was only the first step in a long, often difficult, journey for both couples. "Someone Else's Child" is the story of Sue's experience as a 'gestational carrier'?at the age of thirty-nine, with a family of her own, when surrogacy in Australia is still rare, and commercial surrogacy illegal. In her own words, Sue describes the emotional highs and lows, bureaucratic hurdles, physical challenges, family pressures, legal confusion and social scrutiny that followed her decision to become a surrogate. "Someone Else's Child" is a unique personal account of what it means to give the gift of life.

Book excerpt: "John Henry Newman (1801-90) was brought up in the Church of England in the Evangelical tradition. An Oxford graduate and Fellow of Oriel College, he was appointed Vicar of St Mary's Oxford in 1828; from 1839 onwards he began to have doubts about the claims of the Anglican Church for Catholicity and in 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. Other recipients include the Duke of Norfolk and his family; Charles Wellington Furse, Principal of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, near Oxford, and future Archdeacon of Westminster; and Miss Maria Trench, who was preparing some of Keble's papers and reviews for publication. Book Synopsis The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman Volume IX by : John Henry Newman
Download or read book The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman Volume IX written by John Henry Newman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 896 pages. This volume covers a crucially important and significant period in Newman's life. The Church of England bishops' continuing condemnation of Tract 90 - plus Pusey's two-year suspension for preaching a university sermon on the Real Presence - are major factors in Newman resigning as Vicar of St Mary's, Oxford. His doubts about the Church of England are deeper and stronger than ever, and he is moving closer to Rome. William Lockhart's sudden defection to Rome in August 1843 precipitates his resignation. He preaches his final Anglican sermon, 'The Parting of Friends', and retires into lay communion at Littlemore. The first edition of University Sermons, including the celebrated sermon on theological development, virtually sells out within a fortnight.

Book Synopsis The Less Noble Sex by : M. Jeanne Peterson
Download or read book The Less Noble Sex written by M. Jeanne Peterson and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1989-05-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physically frail, badly educated girls, brought up to lead useless lives as idle gentlewomen, married to dominant husbands, and relegated to "separate spheres" of life—these phrases have often been used to describe Victorian upper-middle-class women. M. Jeanne Peterson rejects such formulations and the received wisdom they embody in favor of a careful examination of Victorian ladies and their lives. Focusing on a network of urban professional families over three generations, this book examines the scope and quality of gentlewomen's education, their physical lives, their relationship to money, their experience of family illness and death, and their relationships to men (brothers and friends as well as fathers and husbands). Peterson also examines the prominent place of work in the lives of these "leisured" Victorian ladies, both single and married. Far from idle, the mothers, wives, and daughters of Victorian clergymen, doctors, lawyers, university dons, and others were accomplished and productive members of society who made substantial public and private contributions to virtually every sphere of Victorian life.
