Book excerpt: First published in 1963, the year Russ Hodges started his fifteenth season as the voice of the Giants, MY GIANTS is the story of the man who has lived and died with the team through years that have been triumphant, sometimes disappointing, but never, never dull. “I don’t believe it—I do not believe it” This was Hodges’ cry over the air as Bobby Thomson hit the home run that gave the Giants the 1951 pennant. He was there, too, when Willie Mays made his miracle catch in the 1954 World Series and all through the breathtaking days of the 1962 season when the San Francisco Giants came from far behind to win the play-offs with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the pennant. He has known intimately all the Giant greats of modern times and has opinions and anecdotes, both sad and funny, of Stoneham, Durocher, Rigney, Dark, Stanky, Sal Maglie, Dusty Rhodes, Pierce, Mays, Cepeda, and many more. He was one of the first to know that the Giants would make their historic move from New York to San Francisco, and his locker-room program after their last game at the Polo Grounds has become a broadcast classic. Russ Hodges started his broadcasting career as a singer and disc jockey, but soon found that sportscasting was what he liked best and did best. His voice became known to sports fans all over America. In MY GIANTS he writes of all these sports, of his relations with sponsors, agencies, other announcers, of his great moments and his bloops, in more than thirty years of broadcasting. But first and last, this is the story of the Giants, for their story is very much the story of Russ Hodges. Co-written by Al Hirshberg, a Boston-based sportswriter, co-author of several bestselling biographies, author of non-fiction, and stories and articles for a wide variety of magazines.

Book excerpt: Learn from the Games of the Best Two Chess Players in the World In every sport, there is that one match-up that electrifies the fans. In soccer, you have Ronaldo vs. Messi. In tennis, Federer vs. Nadal. And in chess, there is Carlsen vs. Caruana. The rivalry of reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana began 2010 in the Dutch village Wijk aan Zee and culminated in the World Chess Championship 2018. Over the past years, they have crossed swords 71 times: In classical, rapid and blitz chess. All their games against each other - including the thrilling World Championship match - are thoroughly annotated in this book. GM Niclas Huschenbeth gives detailed move-to-move explanations and decodes the complexities of the game, with the aim to improve the reader's chess understanding. After all, what could be better suited to enhance one's understanding than to study the games of the two best chess players on the planet? From the introduction: What You Will Learn From This Book Have you ever played through a top level chess game and asked yourself "Why in the world did he play that move?" or "This move does not make any sense, what's the idea behind it?" If so, I can completely sympathize. "Learn from the best. Analyze their games. Understand what they are doing and how they are doing it." These were the words of my coach when I was in my youth, aspiring to become a good player myself. And I did. Or rather, I tried. All too often, though, I found myself scratching my head when playing through the games of Kasparov, Kramnik & Co. What was the idea behind this move? Why didn't he play that move instead? Back then, the computers were too weak to be of any help. These days, they are a bit more useful. They tell you the best move and the correct evaluation. But they still do not tell you why. It's like trying to work out a difficult math problem and then just being shown the final solution. No learning happens. I was lucky to have my coach guide me through the jungle that chess often is. But not everybody is so fortunate to have a great coach. This is why I wrote this book. In this book, I decode the sometimes mysterious moves and explain the ideas behind them. To me, chess boils down to two basic skills: understanding and calculation. Finding the right plans and finding ways to execute them - the two go hand in hand. But in training, we often compartmentalize, focusing on one specific topic, let's say "how to play with the bishop pair" or "good knight vs. bad bishop." But chess does not work like that. After all, the beautiful thing about chess games is that you usually have some elements of everything. This is why I always found game analyses to be the most rewarding. You learn about chess as a whole and not about one specific detail. It is not without reason that about every coach recommends the study of one's own games as well as the games of the very best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York has long been both America’s leading cultural center and its sports capital, with far more championship teams, intracity World Series, and major prizefights than any other city. Pro football’s “Greatest Game Ever Played” took place in New York, along with what was arguably history’s most significant boxing match, the 1938 title bout between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling. As the nation’s most crowded city, basketball proved to be an ideal sport, and for many years it was the site of the country’s most prestigious college basketball tournament. New York boasts storied stadiums, arenas, and gymnasiums and is the home of one of the world’s two leading marathons as well as the Belmont Stakes, the third event in horse racing’s Triple Crown. New York sportswriters also wield national influence and have done much to connect sports to larger social and cultural issues, and the vitality and distinctiveness of New York’s street games, its ethnic institutions, and its sports-centered restaurants and drinking establishments all contribute to the city’s uniqueness. New York Sports collects the work of fourteen leading sport historians, providing new insight into the social and cultural history of America’s major metropolis and of the United States. These writers address the topics of changing conceptions of manhood and violence, leisure and social class, urban night life and entertainment, women and athletics, ethnicity and assimilation, and more.

I had watched other individuals go through the transition to widowhood with such grace. I never saw the moments when they broke down. I never knew the struggles they experienced time and time again in that first year. Now here I was navigating through the same space and struggling hard. I have journaled daily for a number of years. My journaling became my best friend as I was able to write down my thoughts and feelings and record steps I was taking and decisions I was making. At the end of the first year, I looked back and marveled at all that had happened, all that I had done. The first year after losing the love of your life is probably one of the most difficult years you will ever experience. My son recommended that I write The Year After, so that maybe some of the things I learned can help another person. This book is a compilation of the thoughts, feelings, and challenges I experienced in that first year after my husband passed away. I pray there is a thought or idea that will help you navigate this challenging time. May God be with you and bless you.

Book excerpt: Tsukiko, thirty–eight, works in an office and lives alone. One night, she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, "Sensei" in a local bar. Tsukiko had only ever called him "Sensei" ("Teacher"). He is thirty years her senior, retired, and presumably a widower. Their relationship–traced by Kawakami's gentle hints at the changing seasons–develops from a perfunctory acknowledgment of each other as they eat and drink alone at the bar, to an enjoyable sense of companionship, and finally into a deeply sentimental love affair. As Tsukiko and Sensei grow to know and love one another, time's passing comes across through the seasons and the food and beverages they consume together. From warm sake to chilled beer, from the buds on the trees to the blooming of the cherry blossoms, the reader is enveloped by a keen sense of pathos and both characters' keen loneliness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Polo Grounds is one of baseball's most sacred ballparks. Built below Coogan's Bluff in 1891, the bathtub-shaped stadium played host to iconic baseball moments, including Willie Mays's famous catch in the 1954 World Series and Bobby Thomson's "shot heard "round the world." The era before those moments holds a history all its own, when the New York Giants, Yankees, and the football Giants shared the park. The dawn of the 20th century through the 1920s is a rarely seen chapter in Polo Grounds history, and it is presented here for the first time in all of its photographic glory.
